The actuating means for engaging the abutments to make or break the toggle may. vary. In Fig. 1 this` actuating means oonsists of a member 13 support-ed at one end by a swinging link 14 and having its other or free end provided with oppositely arranged shoulders 15 for engagement with the two abutments. The free end of the actuating member is disposed in between the two abutment members so as to be capable of engagement with either, and the end of the member may normally rest upon the lower abutment {11),50 as to be slidably supported thereon. Whenthe free end of the actuating member is so supported, the abutment members ma be in the form of rolls, as indicated in Fig. 1, so as to reduce the friction. The actuating member is reciprocated by suitable means such as a cam 16 engaging a cam roll 17 carried by the swinging lever 14. This cain is timed to rotate in unison with the members of the printing couple. This may be done by means of the intermeshing gears 18 and 19 on the impression cylinder and cam shaft 20 respectively.
The devices for positioning the actuating means may vary. In Fig. 1 this positioning device is manually controlled land consists of a pedal 21 connected by a rod 22 to the actuating member. A yielding part may be placed in this connection, such as the spring 23, having a bearing between the shoulde 24 on the rod and the lug 25 on the actuv ating member. If, when the pedal is ilepressed, the actuating member is on the' limit of its out stroke, as in Fig. '1, the spring will store power and give the actu- 1 ating member a further lift at the end of its inward stroke, so asto bring the uppermost shoulder 15 iiitoengagement behind the abutment 12. The positioning pedal lafter being depressed, may be locked in such position by means of a pivoted latch 26 which is controlled by a supplementary pedal 27.
In the operation of that form of the device shown in Fig. 1, the sheets are fed from the feed-board 23 by automatic or other means to the impression cylinder 2. So long as the feeding of stock is uninterrupted, the parts will remain substantially as in Fig: 1, the actuating member simply reciprocating idly back and forth. When any interruptioii in the feed occurs, or when it is desired to trip the impression for other reasons, the foot pedal 21 will be depressed thereby elevating the actuating member into position for engagement with the upper abutment l2. Y lVhen the uppermost shoulder 15' on the actuating member engages with the upper abutment 12, the said iii-amber will inits outward reeipnmation, rock the toggle link '7 about the center of support 8, thereby breaking thel toggle and turning the eecentric bearings so as to shift the cylinder 2 away from the other` member of the print ing couple. parts may be allowed to remain in this tripped position as long as desired. But if the latch is not used, when the lpressure is removed from the foot pedal 21, the actuating member will lower of its own weight until the lowermost shoulder 15 comes into engagement with the lower abutment 11. Then, upon the outward stroke of the actie, ating member, the toggle linkt' Wiil be turned back to its original position, thereby making the toggle and restoring the. ^impression.
The operation of that form of the invention shown in Fig. 2 is substantially the same as just described. I-Iere also the pivotally mounted toggle link 7 carries the two abutments 11 and 12 which are disposed on opposite sides of the center of support of the link. In this case, however, the 'actuating means consists of two reciprocating members 29 and 30, the -first having a shoulder 31 for engagement with the abutment 11, and the other yhaving a shoulder 32 for engagement with' the abutment 12. The members' 29 and 30 may be conveniently supported from a lever' 33 piroted to rockupon the center 34, and for the purpose of imparting the necessary reciprocating inove- Vrient to the members 29 and 30, a cani 35' hay be provided' for engagement withA 'the z'rniioll 36 carried by the lever 33." In a printing press, a printing couple embodying a cylinder and a member coperating therewith, eccentric journal bearings for the cylinder, toggle links connected at one end to the eccentric bearings and at the other end pivotally supported on a station ary part of the press, abutments carried by the said pivotally supported links and ar ranged in opposite sides of the centers of support .of such links, an actuating device mounted to reciprocate in between the said abutments and formed with shoulders for engagement with said abutments, means for reciprocating the actuating device, and means for positioning said actuating device to engage one or the other of the abutments.

In a printing press, a printing couple embodying a cylinder and a member coper ating therewith, eccentric journal bearings for the cylinder, toggles comprising links 90 pivoted at one end upon the frame of the \press and connected at the other end to the bearings, abutment members carried by the pivotally supported links and disposed on opposite sides of the center of support of said links, an actuating device mounted to reciprocate between said abutment members and having shoulders for engagement with the abutment members, means for reciprocating the actuating device, and means for positioning the actuating device to engag: one or the other of the abutment members.

In a printing press, a printing couple embodying a cylinder and a member coperating therewith, eccentric journal bearings 105 for the cylinder, toggles comprising links pivoted at one end upon the frame of the press and connected at the other end `with the eccentric bearings, spaced a'uutments carried by the pivot-.illy mounted links disposed on opposite sides of the centers of support of said links, an actuating device having shoulders for engagement with the said abutments, said actuating device having its one end normally resting upon one oi the abutments, a swinging link: supporting the oppovsite end of the actuating device, cam for imparting a reciprocating movement to the actuating device, and means for shifting the outer end of the actuating device to bring it into engagement with the c her of the abutments.
