Description

dimitri' tude 4DANIEL A RUSSELL,
orfwrNnHAM,oH1o' Letters Patent No. 111,977, dated February 21, i871.
IMPROVEMENT IN lMPLsMl-:N'rs FOR sLl'rrlNG AND LooPlNG RAGS FoR cARPE'rs.
fighe Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
' which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new apparatus for connecting the ends of woolen or other rags preparatory to the weaving of the same into rag-carpet.
The invention consists in the use of a perforated l knifeblade, which is pivoted to a block and heldin au upright pcsition'thereon by a spring catch.
Ain the drawing represents a knife-blade of suitable length, pointed at one end and ground 4to asharp l -edge on one side.
rlhe non-pointed end of the knife is, by means of a pin, a, pivoted to a block [or board B.
AThe said board is grooved or slotted to allow the knife to be folded into it, as shown by dotted lines in g. 1, so that the cutting edge is hidden in case the knife is not used.
C is a spring catch, secured to the face of the block B to hold the knife in an upright position when in use.
. rlhe knife-blade has an aperture, b, some ldistanceY below'its point, as shown.
Two strips of rags to be united are overlapped, and their overlapping parts placed upon the point of the knife, and then drawn down to let the knife pierce the same. The end of the lower strip is then drawn through the opening b, and their the strips are'drawn olic the knife, so that' vthey will both pass over the aforementioned end. In this manner the ends of the strips are properly united or looped preparatory to the weaving of said strips into a carpet.
The same knife canalso be used to rip seams and for other'suitable purposes.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The pivoted knife A, provided with an aperture, D, for uniting carpet-rags, as set forth.
DANIEL A. RUSSELL.
