ARLINGTON BLOUNT. AND CHARLES H. PADULA, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNORS T WORGESTERSHOE MACHINERY COMEANY, Q19 W'ORCESTER, IllEASSA- CHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS. v
POLISHING-WHEEL.
Application filed November is, 1910. Serial No. 592,159.
' Zens of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have jointly invented a new and useful Improve ment in Polishing-Vi heels, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a polishing wheel for polishing the heels of boots and shoes,
and comprises improvements in construction by which the security, ease and rapidity of the attachment of the necessary waxed cloth to the periphery of the wheel are greatly increased, and the assembling of the several parts facilitated, and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the annexed claims. We attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a' top view of a polishing wheel embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of our improved polishing wheel. Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view on the line 33, Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is a sectional view on line H, Fig.3, and Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of the rings or washers detached, by which the waxed cloth is held upon the periphery of the polishing wheel.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts in the different figures.
The polishing wheel is supported upon a standard 1 to which is attached a heating shell or steam chest 2, segmental in form and provided with a horizontal bottom 3. Connection between the steam chest 2 and the standard 1 is obtained by an arm inclosing steam passages 4 and 5 communicating with the steam chest 2 and arranged one above the other, as shown in Fig. 3. A steam supply pipe 6 communicates with the upper passage 1 by which the steam chest is heated, and an exhaust pipe 7 is connected with the lower passage 5 through which the water of condensation, collecting upon the horizontal bottom 3, escapes.
Tnclosing the steam chest 2 and supported upon the end of a rotatable shaft 8 journaled in bearings, not shown, is a polishing wheel constructed as follows :-Mounted upon the end of the shaft 8 is a hub 9 attached to the shaft by .a pin 10. An annular shell 11 divided diametrically isclamped upon the cylindrical hub 9 by bolts 12 passing through radial arms 12 The shell 11 isheld from longitudinal movement by flanges 13 and M at either end of the hub. The flange L1 at the inner endof the hub is provided with notches 15, Fig. 4, arranged to receive pins 16 held in the annular shell 11, by which the rotation of the hub 9 is communicated thereto.
The annular shell 11, when clamped upon the hub 9 and inclosing the steam chest 2, is provided with an outer rim or periphery 17 shaped to fit the curvature of the boot or shoe heel and covered by a cloth 18 which, in the operation of the polishing wheel, is filled with wax. The cloth 18 is stretched over the periphery of the polishing wheel with its edges brought against its sides, and is secured in position by means of washers 19 and 20, which are placed over the edges of the cloth and press them against the sides 21 and 22 of the polishing wheel.
A pair of collars 23 and 241-, one of which is shown in Fig. 5, are placed in contact with the outside of the washers 19 and 20. The collars 23 and 2a are constructed in halves hinged together at 25, which permits them to be opened and applied to the outer rammed Dec. 1, rem.
surface of the polishing wheel. The collarsS 5 23 and 241 are also provided with cam surfaces 26 on their inner sides, arranged to engage lugs 27 pro ect1ng radially from the annular shell 11. The washers l9 and 20 are provided with notches 28 to provide for the passage of the washers over the lugs 27, when a partial rotation of the washers will prevent their removal. The collars 23 and 24 are provided with spanner holes 29 to enable them to be rotated with their cam surfaces 26 in contact with the lugs 27, and thereby pinch the cloth 18 against the sides 21 and '22 of the polishing wheel.
The several parts of the polishing wheel are readily assembled as follows :The washer 19 is slipped over the steam chest 2 and the washer 20 is slipped over the hub 9 of the shaft 8. The standard 1 is then fastened in position relatively to the end of the shaft 8 and the halves of the annular shell 11, forming the polishing wheel proper, are placed over the steam chest 2 and clamped upon the hub 9 by the clamping bolts 12, by
which the annular shell 11 is securely held upon the hub 9 With the pins 16 projecting from the annular shell 11 inserted in the notches 15 ot the flange 1 1- of the hub. The cloth 18 is then drawn over the periphery of the polishing Wheel and the Washers 19 and 20 brought into contact with its edges. The halved collars 23 and 2a are then applied against the Washers 19 and 20 and are rotated until the edges of the cloth are firmly pinched against the polishing Wheel. Steam is admitted to the steam chest 2 and the shaft 8 is rotated, rotating the polishing Wheel freely out of contact with the steam chest 2.
We claim,
1. The combination with a rotatable shaft, of a. hub having upstanding annular end flanges, secured to said shaft, one of said flanges having a pair of diametrically opposite notches in its periphery, a tWo part annular shell, inclosing a concentric chamber,
carried by said hub, each section of said shell having opposing radial arms clamped together between the flanges of said hub, and each section provided with a sin engaging one of the said notches in said flange, and a steam shell supported Within said chamber.
2. The combination, with a fixed supporting member, of a steam shell supported thereby, a rotatable shaft, a two part annular shell inclosing a chamber for the reception of said steam shell, one end of said chamber being open for the passage of said fixed supporting member, the sections of said annular shell at vthe other end of said chamber having opposing radial arms clamped together and supported from said,
