lie it known that I, JUL'IUsN. CAYO, a citizen of `the United States, residing at Gary, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in- Vending-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vending machines and has particular application to a coin controlled vending machine for dispensing cigars when the proper coin has been deposited in themachine. It will be understood, however, that my invention in its useful application is not limited to the dispensing of any particular commodity, as
various articles may be vended. In-'c'arrying out the present invention, it
is myv purpose to provide a vending machine by means of `which, when the proper coin has' been inserted in the machine, cigars will ,f be dispensed singly. In the present instance, l have shown ai duplex vending machine capable of vendingcigars'of 4various prices, the duplex apparatus being' controlled from a single handle.
Itwillbe understood, however, that the ma chine may embody7 any number of vending units and each unit may be of any desired capaci all of such units being controlled by a single operating handle, the units beingv so correlated and arranged that the insertion of a coin of a particular denominationin the respective slot or chute will render that particular unit only operative independently of the other units.
Referring now to the accoinpanving drawings in detail, the numeral l indicates the casing or housing of a machine which is constructed of any suitable material and is .preferably provided with a front wall of glass, the said casing being formed in such manner as to nicely accommo'ilatethe various mechanisms .of each unit of the machine.

The `tree. ends of the rods 69, 69 are preferably upset so as to abut the Walls of the openings 70 in the normal con dition of the coin controlled mechanism. Immediately below each .opening 71 a retaining pin 72 is assed through the' wall ofithe respective s ot 60 and both ins are connected to each other by means o u strip 73 acted upon by a leaf spring 74 to hold the ins projected into the slots. Springs 75, 5 each' have one end connected to the strip 73 and the opposite'end fastened to the upright 64 so that when the member 57 1s moved forwardly under the action of the operating handle, thel pins will be with drawn from the slots 60, 60 in the member 57, a suitable stop being provided to limit the outward movement of the pins so as to avoid displacement thereof, such stops com prising a metallic st;ip 76 fastened to the member 57 and rejecting arms 7 terminating in oset ngers 78 spaced apart from the adjacent wall of the member 57 to permit the pins 72 to be retracted from the slots.
Each dispensing unit of the machine is provided with a coin chute 79 which, in the present instance. is suitably fastened to the container 10 of the respective unit. These coin chutes are disposed between the units and the lower end of each terminates immediately above the member 57 so that the chutes will aline with the slots 60, 60 when the member 57 is in normal position, the upper extremities of the coin chutes extending` outwardly ofthe casing 1 so that the coins may be inserted therein. The
l coin chute 79 of one unit and the respective slot in the member are designed to receive coins of one denomi` nation for instance', five cents while the other chute and the remaining slot of the member 57 alining therewith are designed for the purpose of receiving coins of another denomination for example, ten cent' pieces." When a coin is deposited in the respective chute such coin travels downwardiy within the chute and drops into the respective slot (il) in the member 57 and is arrested by the respective retaining pin T2 and held in front of the relatively large opening 71 in the wail of the slot, the marginal edges of the coin engaging the wall ot such opening. the opening for this pin` pose being of a diameter less than that of the coin. lVhe-n the coin is in this position, a fixed/connection is established between the .member 57 and the respective rod 69 whcreby in the movement of the member 57 under the action of the operating handle 58, the rod will travel forwardly and so actuate the respective bell crank lever 45 to cause the operation of the operating mechanism of the particular` unit as hereinbefore described, the spring 63 returning the member 57 to normal position upon the release of the operating handle.
In order to close the coin chute 79 of each dispensing unit when the container is empty 57 alining therewith provided with upwardly ign-'19,088
so as to notify purchasers of the condition of the machine, any suitable means may be employed. In the present instance, this 00in chute closing means is connected with one arm of to the side wall of the particular container and secured to the free arm of the hell crank lever is one end of a cord 98 or other flexible element havin the opposite end ther f fastened to and spool 94 surrounding the shaft of the drum 19 and connected to the ratchet wheel 24 c such drum. Thus, as the drum 19 is rotated from the operating mechanism of the articular dispensing unit to move the bloc 22 rearwardly, the cord will he wrapped about the spoel 34 and so operate the chute closing means in a gradual manner. A contractile spring 95 has one end connected to the container of each unit and the opposite end fastened to he bell crank lehrer to hold the latter in nor/mal position.
