Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH RosoLorsKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Saving Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in life-saving apparatus, and is what may be termed a floating parachute or unsinkable buoy, the main object of the invention being the provision of an apparatus which when not in use can be collapsed to occupy avery small space and which can be instantly opened or extended to provide an apparatus which will accommodate the person and provide a means which will float upon the water and which cannot possibly sink or be capsized.

Another object of my inventionis the provision of an apparatus which can be easily stored and transported when not in use, but which willpermit of quick and easy adjustment to the person and permit such person to jump with safety from the vessel into the water, the apparatus serving to properly maintain its equilibrium while in the air, and upon reachingthe water provide an apparatus which will properly accommodate the person and be absolutely non-sinkable and provide a reliable life-saving means.

Another object of my invention is the provision of an apparatus of the character and for the purposes stated, which will be of simple construction to enable its production at a low price, which will be light in weight but very strong and durable, which can be quickly adjusted to the person, and be easily stored, and which generally from every point of view will be thoroughly efficient and practical.

\Vith these objects in view, my invention, broadly stated, consists of a floating portion provided with a parachute and means to receive and properly support the person, and leg-receiving members carried by the floating portion to receive and protect the legs of the person.

The invention further consists of a lifesaving apparatus of the character described, embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.

In order that the construction in detail andthe manner of applying or using my apparatus may be fully understood and its many advantages be appreciated, I have shown in the accompanying drawings an apparatus constructed in accordance with my 1nvent1on,it being understood that any changes may be made in such construction as fall within the scope of my claims.

Figure 1 represents a view partly in section and partly in elevation of a life-saving apparatus embodying my improvements, the parts of the apparatus being in the position they occupy when said apparatus is in use. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view taken on line 2-2 ofFig. l, and Fig. 3 represents a side view of one of the sections or members of the parachute or cover of my apparatus.

In the drawings: the numeral 1, designates one member of the body portion of my apparatus, which comprises the pair of spaced rings or hands 2, the inner band being formed at its lower edge with a flange 3, and said bands being secured in spaced relation by means of the ,fastenings 4E,"and in the surrounding space between saidbands is placed the material 5, which. is preferably cork or other buoyant material, the inner ring or band being provided with a series of vertical ribs 6, which engage the flat ring 7, from which depends the cork or buoyant ring or band 8, thus making the lower buoyant ring 8, movable or telescopic with reference to the upper member, and both the rigid and movable member being thus practically composed of buoyant material, the member or ring 8, being inclosed in suitable bands 9.

From this construction it will be understood that the floating or buoyant body portion of my apparatus consists of two circular members which are adapted to telescope one within theother and to be limited and guided in their movement, and to the upper member is secured the parachute or cover, which consists of the two frame structures 10, which are pivoted at 11 to the upper member with their inner meeting portions adapted to be secured in open position by, suitable fastenings or clips 12, and upon the two-part pivoted frame structure is secured the covering 13, said covering being also secured at its lower edge 14 to the upper floating member.

From this construction it will be apparent that I provide a floating body portion consisting of two members and that one of said members supports a parachute or cover which can be opened to provide a complete covering or which can be collapsed when desired, and that this parachute is connected along a portion of its edge to the body portion, and is open at one side as at 15, and

secured to the two members of the body portion around their exterior, as at 16, are the depending leg members 17, which are thus properly disposed with reference to the said body portion to receive the legs of the person, said leg portions and their connection with the body of the apparatus being constructed of a suitable Water-proof fabric, of any desired chancter.

It is thus seen that '1 provide a. covering or parachute, an open two-part floating body portion and leg members connected with and depending from said body portion, all of which parts can be folded or collapsed or instantly extended or opened when desired, and mounted upon the support 18, secured in an eye-tastenmg it), is the occupants seat 20, and surrounding said seat is the body engaging band 21, suitably secured to the low er member of the body by the series of straps 22-, and to said band 21, is connected the shoulder straps 23, the whole providing a harness or means to properly retain the person upon the seat and with reference to the leg portions, open body portion and parachute.

It is evident that the person is properly received and accommodated inthe apparatus in a comfortable and natural position, and for the purpose of providing "food or water for the use of the person, in the event that they may be stranded for some time, 1

The many advantages of my apparatus will be readily understood and appreciated, and it will be apparent that the apparatus cannot possibly sink, can be instantly applied and accommodate the person in a comfortable and safe manner, can be collapsed with ease and with equal ease opened for use, and generally is thoroughly efficient and practical.

I claim:

2. An apparatus of the character described, consisting of a buoyant body composed of two telescoping members, having guiding and limiting means, leg members depending from said body portion, and a parachute or covering carried by said body portion and consisting of a pair of hinged sections.

3. An apparatus oi the character described consisting of a buoyant body composed of two telescoping members, one formed with ribs and the other having guides receivin said ribs, flanges on said members to limit their movement, leg members, and a parachute carried by said body portion.

4. An apparatus of the character described, consisting of a two-part buoyant body portion, leg members, and a parachute carried by said body portion, and means for supporting a person mounted within said body portion, said means consisting of a saddle support mounted upon one of the members, a saddle on said support, and a harness for the person supported by one of the members of the body portion.

5. An apparatus oil the character described, consisting of a buoyant body portion, composed of members having guiding and retaining means, leg members, a parachute carried by said body portion, a seat supporting bar, a seat supported upon said bar, a. harness for engaging the body 01" the person supported in said body portion, and food-supplying means arranged convenient to said seat, and consisting of receptacles in the leg members and feed tubes leading from said receptacles.

6. An apparatus of the character described, consisting of a buoyant body portion, a parachute carried by said body por tion, leg members depending from said body portion, receptacles in said leg members, a seat supported in the body portion, feed tubes leading from the receptacles to said seat, and a harness for engaging the person and supported from the body portion.
