The combination with a steam enginey cyllnder having main and auxillary exhaust ports,' of a valve controlling the auxiliary port, a. spring tending to open said valve, a toggle acting on the valve and adapted when straightened to lock the valve closed, and means actuated by reduction of pressure in the exhaust pipe of the engine to straighten the toggle.
