CLOTHES WASHING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED DEG.17, 1913 1,1 18,996. Patented De0.1,1914.
it \To all whom it my concern:
nvnnnrrn. Yn'rnsxo'r ANCRAM LEAD MINES, NEW-YORK.
. Be't known that I, EVERETT lumbia, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Washing Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,"c'lear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. b
The present invention is directed to 1 clothes washing devices, and more particularly to that type known as pounders.
The invention has for its object to construct a device of this character which may be used; for cleansing clothes when submerged in water by reciprocating the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clothes pounder so constructed that a partial vacuum will be obtained during the upward movement of the device, thereby insuring thorough cleaning of the clothes.
With these and other objects in view,-this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in .f
the accompanying'drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of-the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view through the same. ,Fig. 3 is ajbottom plan view. Fig. 4 is'asectional view on line 44 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a tubular handle, the upper end i of which is closed by a threaded cap 2, said cap having the vent opening 3 formed in its top, the purpose of which will appear later.
The lower end of the handle 1 is provided with an annular shoulder 4 which limits the downward movement of the cylindrical holi 1 low valve 5. The lower end of the handle is further provided with a nozzle 6.
A conical head 7 is provided and has its minor end secured'in any suitable manner to the lower end of the handle 1, and in a position sothat the nozzle 6 will extend lnto the upper end of the head.

Application filed n ecemb er 17', 1913. Serial no. 807,300.
Ports 8 are formed in the head 7 the same being disposed diametrically opposite,
said ports being protected by guards. 9, wh ch have their upper ends closed and their lower ends open, said guards being semi-circular in cross section so that pas-. sageways 10'are provided for communica tion with the ports 8. The guards 9*will prevent clothes from being sucked into enports 8 during the reclprocation of the device, while the ports will permit free circulation of water through the head upon certain movement of reciprocation thereof.
Guard bars 11 are arranged in the major end of the head to prevent the clothes being washed from entering the. head, said bars also serving as heaters to aid in removing the dirt from the clothes.
In operation the device in its downward movement will contact with the submerged clothes, whereupon the water entering the head will 'force 1 the valve .5 upwardly.
. Water will also pass through the ports 8 and will exit through the passages 10 until the water closes the ports 8, whereupon a partial vacuum is formed in the upper end of the head. On the upstroke of the device the, waterin the handle will rush therefrom, after which the valve will seat upon the annular shoulder 4.- so that the partial vacuum in the upper end of the head will be retained until the water uncovers the ports 8, the vacuum serving to create suction which greatly aids in cleaning the clothes.
By providing the vent opening 3 in the cap the hollow valve 5 may move upwardly.
