ROYAL EDWIN BENSON, OI" .PERRYSBURG, NEW YORK.
COMBINED SURFACE-GAGE.
Application filed April 13, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROYAL E. BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Perrysburg, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Surface-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved combined trysquare surface gage and depth gage and consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices, hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved surface gage and depth gage which is adapted to be applied to and used in connection with a trysquare and which takes up very little room, in a tool chest and weighs considerably less than the surface gages now in common use.
In the accompanying drawing :-F igure 1 is a side elevation of a combined square, surface gage and depth gage constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line (c -44 of Fig. 1. 3 is a detail sectional view on the plane indicated by the line ?)-b of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of my invention here shown, the square 1 which comprises the handle member 2 having angularly related sides 3, 4i and a level 5 in the side 3. and the blade or arm 6, which is at right angles to the side 3, is detachably secured by the bolt 7 to the handle 2 and is provided in one side with a longitudinal groove 8 which extends from end to endof said arm or blade. The bolt passes through an opening in the handle and has at its inner end a flange 7 which engages the groove 8, a nut 7 being screwe on the outer end of the bolt.
In connection with the grooved arm or blade, I provide a clamp 9 which comprises a pair of members 10-11. The member 10, which is of oblong rectangular form, has plane surfaces. The member 11, which corresponds in size and shape with the member 1.0 is provided on its inner side at one end with a recess 12 which is adapted to receive the arm or blade 6 of the square so that the said arm or blade may be secured between the said members 1011 and the said mem- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1914 Serial No. 690,636.
ber 11 has its reduced portion formed with a transverse tongue 13 which engages the groove 8 of the blade or arm of the square.
A bolt 14 extends through alined openings near the centers of the members 10-11 and is formed at oneend with an outwardly projecting head or stud 15 which has a trans verse opening through which extends a gage pin 16. The said pin has pointed ends 17-18, the end 18 being bent at right angles to the pin, as shown. The head or stud 15 is of greater diameter than the threaded portion 1a of the bolt and forms a shoulder against which a washer 19 bears, the said washer also bearing on the outer side of the member 10. A thumb nut 20 is screwed on the projecting end of the bolt 14-, bears against the outer side of the member 11 and serves to clamp the members 1011 together in connection with the bolt, and ,to also clamp the members to opposite sides of the arm or blade of the square and secure the said members of the clamp to the arm or blade of the square at any desired adjustment. Near their outer ends, the members 10-'11 of the clamp are formed in their opposing sides with circular recesses 21 in one ofwhich is secured a stud 22 which enters the recess of the other member, the said stud coacting with the bolt 1a to keep the members of the clamp in alined registering relation.
It is thought that the operation of my improved combined square, surface gage and depth gage will be readily understood.
l/Vhile I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim The herein described surface and depth gage for use on the arm or blade of a trysquare comprising a pair of clamping members having opposing plane surfaces, and
provided on theiropposing sides near one end one with a recess and the other with a. stud to engage said recess and one of said members also having a recess on its inner side at and extending from the other end to receive the arm or blade of a trysquare, a bolt extending through and. connecting said members at a point intermediate their ends, said bolt having a stud of enlarged diameter projecting from and bearing against one side of one of. the members, the said. stud being provided With a transverse opening spaced from said member, a gage pin extending through said opening of said bolt stud and arranged for movement therein, 1 3
and a clamp nut on the other end of the bolt and bearing against the other member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
