To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J osnPH H. RnANnY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. J ohnsville, in the county of Montgom- H 5ery and State of New York, have invented ments, and is more particularly intended for producing union suits.

It is an object of my invention to produce a knit garment having a body of comparatively large size, without employing a large machine such as is necessarily employed to produce a garment of similar size according to present methods.

By means ofmy invention union suits of ample size may be produced by knitting mills equipped only with cylinders for mak ing womens vests and womens bloomers or pants as the latter are known in the trade, and the new result is accomplished without altering or adding, to the usual equipment of said mills.

In carrying out my invention, a tubular body fabric is knitted of narrower width than that of the finished garment, and is then slit from the top downwardly on two 80 lines so separated as to produce a narrow back and a relatively wider front. Inserts are added to the back, at the sides, to bring it to the full width of the garment, the inserts being joined to the side edges of the said back, and joined to the front above and below the scye. The preferred arrangement has shaping seams between the narrow back and the inserts extending from the shoulder downwardly and rearwardly on curved lines to a point below the scyes. The inserts thus incorporated in the otherwise narrow garment accomplish another important ob ect of my invention, which is, to prevent the garment from drawing tightly across the :bust.

in producing a garment in accordance with my invention, a tubular body fabric is formed of a width considerably less than the width to be given to the finished garment. The fabric is thencut on two lines from the top toward, but short of, the waist.

The lines of cutting are so located as to result in a narrow back panel 11 and a rela tively "wide front 10 the full width of the garment, the front having ordinarily the usual opening 10. The lower portions of the front and back are left integral. Subsequently the upper edges of the front and back are joined to each otherat each side of the neck, by the shoulder seam 11, the front thus extending laterally at the shoul ders beyond the back panel. In connection with the separated upper portions of the front and back thus formed, separately knit inserts 12 are added and secured along one edge as at 141:, to the adjacent side edges of the back 1 1. Each insert extends at the upper portion laterally to the adjacent scye, and may be joined to a sleeve 13, at the back of the latter, the sleeve being also joined to the side edge of the front 10. Below the scyes the inserts are advantageously tapered to form V-shaped downward extensions 12. and thus the seams 14 that join the inserts 1.2- to the narrow back 11 will be continuous from the shoulder to the lower pointed terurinals 17 of the extensions, the top of each edge of each insert being joined to the top edge of the front by a shoulder seam 12, outside of and in line with the seam 11*. The forward edges 16 of the extensions 12 are joined to the adjacent edges of the front 10 at the sides of the body below the scye. In joining the meetingedges of the back and inserts, the edges are preferably so shaped that the seams extend downwardly and outwardly on curved lines at thesides of the garment.

By forming the garment as above de scribed, machines employed for producing ladies medium size vests and bloomers or pants may be utilized for producing union suits of ample size, whereas, the ordinary method of producing union suits, in order to result in a garment having the combined width of the back 11 and inserts 12, necessitates the employment of a much larger machine. Moreover, it will be evident that the provision of the inserts of the particular character employed by me obviates all strain across the bust; thus my invention results in material manufacturing advantages, andbust, and having inserts corresponding with said front extensions and disposed at each side, the said extensions and inserts extending to the armholes.

2, A knit undergarment formed from a tubular body fabric, and having a body widened at its upper portion beyond the initial width of the tubular body fabric, and comprising a vertically open front having side extensions. brought forward from the back, a narrower back integral with the front at its lower end and extending centrally from the garment separately from the front, and separately knit inserts at each side of the narrow back and joined along one edge thereto, the said inserts at the up per ends extending to the shoulder seams and laterally to the scye s, each insert being tapered into V-form downwardly to the lower end, the forwardedges of the V-shaped @jonfleaofithila patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addreasingthe extensions being joined to the side edges of the front extensions.

A union suit having a. bodyformed from a tubular body fabric, the same being divided at the side above the waist to present lateral, integral extensions on the front and to present a narrow central integral back portion, the back having inserts at the sides of said central portion and joined to the latter and to the said front extensions, the said central back portion with the inserts presenting a total width corresponding with the. front and its integral extensions, thefront with the integral lateral extension and the back with the inserts giving increased width to the body at the bust.
