\ To all whom t may concern i Be it known that we, EDWIN Il. ELiAsoN and Geenen H. ZIEGLER, citizens of the United States, residing 1n Philadelphla, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvenients in `Machines for Forming Heeli Lining `Inserts for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is afspeeification.
The object of this invention is to construct a machine for rapidly and accurately forminga heel lininginsert adapted for use in boots and shoes. This insert is to be used whenthe lining at the heel is worn and by inserting this lining in a shoe in which the original lining is worn, it `takes the place of the original lining and prevents the stretched; Fig. 7, is a perspective View of .y

^ A is the base of the machine supported on suitable legsja and mounted on this base is a form B made hollow as shown. Within the form is a suitable gas burner b2 connected to a gas supply pipe b3, for heating the form to the proper degree. The upper surface of theform is rounded, as `illustrated, to conform to the shape of the back of the shoe, while the front is flat so as to receive the` sole piece to which the body of the heelyinsert is secured. Secured to the cross head are bear ings Ze-(Z for vertical rods e-e attached to the die E, which conforms to the shapeiof the upper surface of the form B.` Springs c are mounted on the `rods e between the die and the bearing (l and tend to press the die toward the ferm.` The downward movement ofthe die is` limitcdby `the nutse? on` the ends of the rods coming incontact withthe bearings.

Back of each plunger G is a coiled spring g', which tends to force them toward the form B.` The plungers Gr have extensions which pass through caps g2 and are provided with nuts g3. By adjusting thecaps onpthe bearings G', the inner position of the rolls g can be regulated according to the size of the form used, as it willfbe understoodthat there must be `a l and an adjustable cap h2 and on the end of the stem of the plunger, which extends through the cap, are adjusting nuts h3.
' Adapted to slide on standards l is a cross head 1, which is connected by rods Ji to a bar lf2 under the base A and this bar is in turn connected by a link J to a lever J pivoted to a depending bearing A at a. The lever is in turn connected by a link J 2 to a foot lever J3, also pivoted to the bearing A. On operating the foot lever the cross head I will be drawn down. Springs z" mounted on the rods l and between the cross head and the base A, tend to force the cross head up as soon as the foot lever is released.
Pivoted at a to the cross head in line with the form B is a plate N. @n this plate N is a U-shaped plate n which turns the projecting flange of the blank of the heel insert against the sole piece This U-shaped plate is beveled so that when it is forced down it crimps the ange of the blank and as it passes the rolls 71, it is forced toward the form and in turn presses the inturned flange against the cemented surface of the sole piece.
In order to push the rolls g-g back from the form G, we provide two levers M, pivoted at m to bearings on the base A, and these levers are connected to the ends of the plungers G and in the lower ends of the levers are inclined slots m into which eX- tend pins ,fo-p of a two-armed lever P carried by a shaft P mounted inbearings secured on the under side of the base .A The operating handle P2 is attached to the shaft within easy reach of the operator so that on turning the shaft the plungers G G and the rolls move away from the form.
In order to move the roll /L and its plunger H away from the form, we pro vide a cam m2 on one of the arms M which acts upon an arm H3 attached to the plunger H so that on operating the lever M the plunger will be retracted against the pressure of its spring.
s-s are platforms mounted on the bearings G in the present instance and shaped to receive the ends of the body blank which forms the back of the side portions of the heel insert, and hold it central over the form.
This machine does not finish the entire heel insert, but shapes it and places the parts in the proper position so that they can be readily finished by hand or upon another machine. n
The operation of the machine is as follows :-The blank m forming the body of the heel insert is subjected to moisture to make it pliable and to allow it to be stretched over the form. We prefer to place the blank in a steam boX at one side of the machine, but. any other suitable moistening means may be employed. The body blank is then placed on the form B, the edges resting on the platforms s-s and above the rolls g. The sole piece fr is cemented on one face and placed in position at the end of the form. The shaft C is then turned through the medium of the handle c and the head D is moved toward the form B. The arms F', as they move downward, press the side portions of the blank m against the rollers g, g, and stretch the blank over the form B.
The overhanging edges of the blank an are tucked in against the cemented surface of the heel piece by the U-shaped plate as it is drawn down by the treadle J s, between the roll L and the form B, forcing the inturned edges of the blank a; against the blank and holding it there while the cement sets, after which the parts are released and the formed heel insert is removed from the machine. The combination. in a machine for forming heel inserts, of a form on which the blank is mounted; a cross head; a die yieldingly mounted on the cross head above the form; arms on the cross head for forcing the blank-over the form; means for moving the cross head; pressers located in the path of the arms for forcing them against the form; and means for holding the inturned edges of the body blank against a sole piece previously placed at the end of the form.
The combination in 'a machine for forming heel inserts, of a form upon which the body blank and the sole piece for the heel insert are mounted; a die shaped to conform to the body blank; a pivoted arm on each side of the die; means for moving the die and the arms down on tothe form, the arms having a greater movement than the die; means for holding the sole piece on to the form; a movable plate at the end of the form; and means for moving said plate so that it will force the inturned portions` of the body blank against the sole piece. l

a shaft; an arm on the shaft; a rod connecting the arm with the cross head; means for operating the rod; a die mounted on the crosshead and shaped to conform to the upper surface of the form; a spring for allowing the die to yield alter it has come 1n Contact with the form; two pivoted arms` carried by the cross head, tapered at the lower ends and shaped on the inside to fit the side of the form; spring plungers acting to press the said arms against the form; and means for holding the inturned end of the body blank `against the cemented surface oi' the sole piece after said body blank has been clamped to the form.
The combination in a machine for shaping heel inserts, of a form; means for attaching a sole piece to the end of the form; platforms at each side ot the form for holding the lateral extensions of the body blank While resting on the form; a cross head; means tor reciprocating the cross head; `a springpressed die mounted on the cross head and adapted to bear upon the form; pivoted arms mounted on the cross head, the inner ends oit said arms being shaped to conform to the sides ot the form; the outer surface of the arms being tapered; spring-actuated plunger-s having` rolls for forcing the arms toward the form and thereby stretching and binding the body blank against the sides of the form; means for holding the inturned edges ot' the body blank against the cemented surface of the sole piece; and means or retracting the plungers.

The combination in a machine for forming heel inserts, of a form; means for attaching a sole piece to the end of the form; supports 'tor the ends oit' a body blank when it is applied to the form; standards; a cross head mounted toreciprocate on the standards; `means for `reciprocating said cross head; sliding bearings on the cross head; arms pivotally mounted on the sliding bearings and extending on each side of the form; means for forcing the ends of the arms toward the form when the cross head is lowered; and springs for retracting the sliding bearingwhen the parts are released. i

The combination in a machine `:tor forming heel inserts, of a form; means for attaching a. sole piece to the end of the form; means for supporting a body blank on the form; a spring-pressed die bearing upon the top ol' the form; pivoted arms; means tor iorcmg said arms down past the torni; means tor causing said arms to press upon the form; a cross head; a plate carried by the cross head and adapted to` bear upon the inturned ends of a body blank at the end of the form; and a spring plunger arranged to bear against the plate and to hold it 'in contact with the blank.
