KEYHOLE-GUARD FOR MULTIPLE- KEY LOCKS. l I i To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BARTHOLOMEW F. KLoI-1s,;a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the countyofStark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Keyhole- Guards for Multiple-Key Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present; invention has to do with that class of locks more especially employed upon safety deposit boxes, in which at least two keys must be employed to open the lock, one key tobe retained by the banker or custodian of the safety depositbox, the. other keyto be retained and used by the depositor. The object. and reason for this is that before a the safety deposit box or other receptacle can be opened the depositor must beidentitied as the proper owner of the k ey carried, before he ispermittedto use the key to open the box. In use and for the purpose of proper protection to the depositor it is best that it requires the presence of both the depositor and the banker or custodian to properly manipulate ,thellock. The object of the present invention is to provide; such means that two keys must be employed andin such a manner that the depositor cannot open thelocklnor can the, "custodianopen the box with the key carried by either, without the use, of both keys. The specific manner of connecting the spindles 3 and/l does not haveto do with the present invention, except that such parts must necessarily bepresent. The spindle 3 is the one designed to l be actuated by the .85 key carried by or in possession of the banker or custodian, andthe spindle i is the one designed tobe actuated by the key carriedby the depositor. Vithinthe lock casing is 10- key carried by the custodian, nor can the. key carried by the custodian be insertedin the ordinary tumblers,ftmtil after the tumbler 9 has been actuated by the key carried by the banker or custodian.

The tumbler 9 is provided with theydownward projecting extension or flange 12, said flange being located in close proximity to thespindlo 3 when said tumbler in its lowermost position, or in the positionillustrated in Fig. 9. 10, thereby bringing the slot 14 formed in the tumbler9 into position to register with the tongue 15 carried by the lock bolt 16 at which time the lock bolt is. free to be brought into position to unlock the door so far as said particular tumbler is concerned. After the tumbler 9 has thus been lifted by the key carried by the banker or custodian, the key carried by the depositor can be placed in the key way or slot 6 of the spindle 4 and'the remaining tumblers common to, looks of this nature actuated by said key whereb all of the tumblers are brought into position so that all of theslots similar to the slot 14 will register with the tongue 15,"after which tuated by the depositors key and the one provided with the slot or key way 6 is' also provided with a transverse slot 17, into which transverse slot the projection 18 is entered when the tumbler 9 is in its lowered position, or in the position illustrated in Fig. 9, and when the projection 18 is located in the slot 17, the depositors key 19 cannot be put in the key way 6,'but can be after the tumbler 9 has been elevated, as
illustrated in Fig. 10. In deposit boxes such as are used by difi'erent. depositors and where a large number or a given number of different deposit boxesare assembled and the various boxes rented 'to different individuals it is of importance that the key ways of the spindles be protected in such a manner that the banker or custodians key cannot be inserted or placed in thespindle in the absence of the depositor, and in order to prevent the banker or custodian from tampering or in any way meddling with the look I provide the key hole guards 20 and 21, the guard 20 being the one designed to be controlled by the depositor and the guard 21, being the one controlled or the one manipulated by the banker or custodian'but thesev guards can both be operated a single person or by the banker or custodian or depositor, but the depositors guard can not be removed until it is released as hereinafter described.
The key hole guard 20 is provided with the slot 22 and when the guard is placed in proper position and in the position illustrated in Fig. 4 and the tumbler 9 located in the position illustrated in Fig. 9 said guard cannot be removed until it is released by the banker or custodians ,key. When the guard 20is placed in position the cross notch or slot 122 is so located that it will register with the transverse slot 17 so that when the tumbler 9 is lowered the projection 18 will engage the slot or cross notch 22, thereby locking the guard in the key hole and in such a manner that it cannot be removed until the tumbler 9 is elevated and the extension 18 moved from the notch or slot 22.
The 'custodians guard 21 is' originally placed in the position shown in full lines Fig. 4-, said guard being placed in the key way 5 and the notch 23, which notch is formed in" the annular flange 24 located upon the sleeve 7 but after the guard has been brought into the position illustrated in full linesFig. l and in dotted lines 'the shoulder 25 will come in contact with the inner edge of the annular flange 24: so that the guard 21 cannotbe removed until it is brought into the position illustrated in full lines Fig. 4 or until the key way registers with the notch 23; which notch provides clearance for the" shouldered end of the key hole guard 21.
The key hole guards '20 and 21 "are each provided with the flanges 26 and 27, which flanges are provided with the apertures 28 and 29 and when the keyhole guards 20 and 21 are brought into thep'osition illustrated in Fig. l'the apertures 28 and 29 will register, thereby providing a means for securing the key hole guards together, with reference to each other. that there may be many waysand many devices employed for securing the key guards together, but I have illustrated one, way which consists of what might be termed a seal'hasp, which seal hasp as illustrated is made up of two members 30 and 31 hinged together. The member 30 is provided with a disk or an enlarged end 32, which may be provided with aseriesoflugs 33. The membe placedupon thehasp members and a seal of any desired form impressed upon the sealing by which arrangement the seal thus impressed will be asafe guard as against anytampering by 'a person or persons without authority. For the purposeof greater security the seal impressed upon the sealing wax may be lmpressed by the gem of v a ring worn by thedepositor, thereby assisting in a further degree at least in identifying the depositor.

In a device of the character described, the combinatlon ot a lock cas1ng,,a series of spindles carried by the casing, said spindles provided with key Ways,0ne of the key ways provided with a transverse slot intersecting said key way, a tumbler provided with a projection adapted for contact with one of the keys, said tumbler provided with a projection adaptedrfor engagement with the transverse slot in one of the keyways, key hole guards adapted to be inserted in the key ways of the spindles, one of said key hole guards provided with a slot adapted to register with the transverse slot of one of the key ways of the spindles, the projection of the tumbler adapted for engagement with the slot of the key hole guard and means for securing the key hole guards in relative position independent of the means for locking one of the key hole guards to the spindle.
2. For a multiple key lock provided with aplurality of adjacent key holes, a key hole a guard comprising a plurality of guard mem bers adapted to be entered into said key holes, means operated by the key in one key hole for maintaining the guard member in the adjacent key hole and the guard member in said adjacent key hole adapted for movement while in said adjacent key hole toward and from the first guard member,
and means for preventing the removal of said second guard member when moved toward the first member.
3. Fora multiple key lock having adjacent separate depositors and custodians key holes, a depositors key hole guard adapted for insertion into the depositors key hole, means releasable by the custodians key for maintaining said depositors guard in the depositors key hole, and a custodians key hole guard adapted for insertion into the custodians key hole, and,when so inserted, adapted for movement toward and from said depositors key hole guard, and means for locking said guards together.
lwFor a multiple key lock having separate adjacent depositors and eustodians key holes, a depositors key hole guard adapted for insertion into the depositors key hole, a tumbler within said lock adapted to be operated by the custodians key and adapted to retain said depositors key hole guard in said depositors key hole and eustodians key hole guard. adapted to be inserted into the custodians key hole, and, when so inserted adapted to be rotated toward and from said depositors key hole guard, means for locking said guards together, and means for preventing removal of the custodians key hole guard when rotated toward said depositors key hole guard.
