My invention relates to what are known as track drilling machines, particularly adapted and larranged for drilling tie or joint holes, reaming joint holes, and also for drilling holes for rail bonding, although I contemplate usingmy invention Wherever applicable.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and eilicient machine of this char` acter built for rapid wor; and adapted to be applied to and removed from the tra-oli in a simple and rapid manner7 being provided with means for feeding the drill to the Work and also for moving and adjusting the drill to different positions so as to drill at different heights. I

To the casing of the drill motor is secured in suitable manner as by means of the screws 2a an inverted yoke encompassing the upper portion of the casing or body of the drill motor and provided on each side with a pair of vertical guide ribs 3. The supporting and giliding structure for the drill comprises a pair of similar rig t and left hand `frames each consisting' of a tubular portion 5 and a pair of vertical guides 6 with which the guide ribs 3 icooperate for vertical adjustment of the drill motor and drill. These tubulanportions 2' are fitted to and slide upon a pair of parallel rods 7 in the operation hereinafter described ot' the movement of the drill to the Work. .The frames are also provided with vertical portions 8 which are connected at theirtop by means of a cross piece or bar 9 secured thereto by the screws 9a and hav-4 ing a central opening. lVithin this open` ine is rotatably mounted a feed nut l0 con? stituting the tubular portion or hub of a hand operating wheel 1l. rlhis nut is held in place bv means of the clamping ringr and set screw -13 (Figs. Q and 3). This feed nut engages the vertical feed screw 1lwhich is secured at its lower end to the top side of the drill casina` with the'result that L when the adjusting.;` Wheel l1 is rotated in one direction or the other, the entire drill structure is raised or lowered accordingly. At the same time this adiusting mechanism constitutes the means for supporting the. drill uitnlgjn'the 'frames described. This cross bar 17 is adapted to be held in diderent adljusted positions along the lengthl of these rods, and for this purpose these rods have a series oi vertical holes 7 at intervals and each of the tubular ends of the cross ba`r17 has a corresponding hole through each of which passes a pin 18 whereby such cross bar'is held in any desired position alon the length of the rods. The adjusting screw 16 is provided with a hand Wheel 19 for' operating the same. It will heunderstood that by turning this Wheel in one di-j rection or the other the drill motor and its immediate supporting 'frames are moved'to'- ward or away from the Work according to the direction of rotation of the Wheel@y In practice I prefer to attach thefeed screw 16 to the yoke 15 in the manner shown inv detail in Fig. 7, according to which the central part of the yoke is bored to receive the extended lreduced end 16'oi'the;feed screw, which is provided with circumferential Igroove'lvl?. After the hole is dril ed, the drill or bit can be Withdrawn' by turning the feed wheel in the reverse direction, or, if desired, the pins 18 can be removed and the drill and its supporting frames rapidly Withdrawn by sliding thenrupqn the rods 7.
l/Vhen the. rails are sufiiciently secured in place on the road bed so that they will not tip when operated upon by the drilling madrill rails which are not yet secured in position, with the result that when the drilling machine has these short hooks there is a liability of tipping of the rail whenl operated upon. To meet this contingency I provide the elongated hooks 22, as shown in Fig. 9, the same having a vertical portion extending downwardly parallel with the web of the rail and a horizontal inturned portion adapted to contract such web at a point approximating the middle portion thereof as to height, so that any tendency of therail to tip or cant is eiictually overcome.
While it may be suiiicient, as hereinbefore described. to merely rest one end of the guide rods upon the rail not being drilled and to have the operator sit upon the seat provided, if desired means may be provided for clamping such end of the rods to said rail, such means to be employed with or without the seat or equivalent device, as may be preferred. I have shown in' Figs. 10 to 12 a desirable clamping means of this character. As shown, I extend the guide rods some distance beyond the rail not being drilled and fit thereupon a cross piece or bar 27 having tubular ends 27 which slidably fit upon'said rods and are secured thereto in suitable manner, as by means of which is similar, with the exception-that the 'same'is adapted to freely slide upon th`e rods, and is not adapted to be secured thereto in any adjusted position, as is the case with the cross bar 27. This cross bar 29 is held toward the cross bar 27 With a. yielding pressure as by means of the coil springs 20. The cross bar 29 is provided toward its ends at a point adj aeent its tubular portions 29a with depending angular hooks or fingers 29b which extend toward the rail and are adapted to engage the same, as clearly shown in Fig. 11. Thiscam is provided with an operating lever 33 secured thereto at its lower end, with the result that when the lever is operated it rotates and forces the cam 3l against/ the intermediate horizontal portion of the cross bar 29, so
.that the clamping hooks 29 are forced .against and retained in engagement with the rail, as described. The proper engagement of these .hooks with a diii'erent cha-racter of rail is obtained by adjusting the cross clearlyin Fig. wherein the sleeve Q0 is' shown provided with bosses 20h and the sleeve 23 with bosses 23h. ln this manner perfect ahnenient of the drilling machine can be obtained, and the drill giused to drill perfectly at right angles through the web of the rail and moreover these flat bosses give a solid andirm bearing upon the rails for the suppor ling rods.
As hereinbefore stated, any particular construction and type of drill motor 'may be employed, but in the present instance the same is of a type operated by electricity, which is desirable when the machine is being employed on traction roads where a supply of electricity is available from the trolley wire. Consequently l have shown in some of the figures of. the drawings the electric supply cable 34 extending into the drill motor, in the present instance the'same passing centrally through the feed screw le.
The drill motor may be removed from the supporting frame by removing the four screws i and turning the bar i) a quarter turn, after which the drill motor is free to be slipped downwardly or permitted to drop from the frame, or, it desired. the iced nut i0 may be turned until the adjusting screw. 'i l is disengaged therefrom.
s clearly shown in the drawings the con- .truction and arrangement of the parts is sii/.ch that the center of gravity ot the drill and lirnme'is below the top line or plane of the rail which not only facilitates the handling of the machine but also materially improves its action. The greater `portion of the machine is suspended from and arranged` below the guide rods 7 and whether the drilling machine proper is at its highest position or not the center of gravityis not above the-top plane of the rail. Furthermore l have so constructed my machine that l am enabled to bore holes at the lowest pos# sible point in the web of the rail without any interference between the drill body and a tie for instance, the lower' portion of the Ydrill body being free ofall parts that would otherwise interfere with this capability.

A track drilling machine comprising,r a drill motor and its drill., a supporting and` guiding structure comprising rods adapted to be supported by the track and guide frames slidable on said rods and supporting the drill motor, a platform arranged upon therods and in rear of the drill motor and adapted to receive a removable weight, and means for feeding' the drill motor to the work, the drill being suspended from the Vrods with its center of gravity below the plane of said rods.
