Be it known that I, \THUR H. LINLEY, citizen of the United States, and resident of Fairiield, in the county of F airfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Priming- Valves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to priming cups such as are used in connection with gas engine cylinders for the introduction of preliminary charges of fuel.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive form of priming cup which will be adapted to various forms of explosive engines; to employ a needle valve in connection with it for regulating the flow of fuel from said reservoir to the engine cylinders, and especially to provide a cover for the reservoir which when open will afford a large filling opening and which when closed will close tightly, and further to provide connections intermediate of said cover and the needle valve operating handle whereby the cover can be operated by the said handle which feature is obviously important and permits the valve to be operated when hot without danger of the operator burning his fingers.
T'Vith these and other objects in view the invention resides and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and upon which,

Fig. 3 is a further sectional plan view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1 the cover being in an open position, and, Fig. 4: is a detached inverted plan view of the collar which is fitted upon the shoulder portion of the valve stem to turn the cover.
Referring in detail to the characters of reference marked upon the drawings 10 represents the main body of the priming valve and 11 the lower threaded plug portion thereof which as will be noted is threaded and adapted to be screwed into the engine cylinder or otherwise connected therewith as the situation may require. This plug portion of the device includes a central drain passage 12 which communicates with a reservoir 13. The latter as will be noted Specification of Letters Patent.

is located off to one side of the stem or valve member 14 which stem includes a beveled end to engage the annular beveled seat 15 formed in the body 10 and surrounding the when the handle 18 is turned. This handle is preferably made of fiber or suitable material which will' n'ot become hot.
A cover 19, which is clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is mounted to turn with the portion 20 of the valve stem and is shaped and finished to turn on and off of the valve body in a Way to cover the reservoir 13 when properly adjusted in alinement therewith-as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The inner pivotal end portion of this cover is provided upon its upper face with a series of radially disposed teeth 21 as more clearly appears in Figs. 1 and 3 and which serve to engage teeth 22 cut in the under side of the collar 23. This collar as will be seen is provided with a shouldered portion 25 of the valve stem, but is thus free to upon the said portion of said stem, though is normally held down so that its teeth are retained in engagement with the teeth of the cover by the action of a spring 26 that is mountedbetween the said collar and the before mentioned handle 18 of the valve stem. The said handle 18 is secured to the upper end of the stem so as to insure the turning of the stem and collar with the turning of the handle. The yieldable engagement between the collar and the cover serves to turn the latter on and 011 of the reservoir without the necessity of the operator directly engaging the cover, yet also permits of a further movement of the handle and stem, if necessary, to more completely open and close the valve. This further movement obviously is permitted by reason of a yieldable engagement of the collar with the cover and which means that as the cover is brought up against the stop pin 27 the teeth of the collar back out of the teeth of the cover and work as a ratchet and slip around without further moving the cover.
The foregoing construction is obviously simple, yet forms an eflicient and attractive priming cup which may be normally kept tightly closed in a way to prevent dust and dirt from getting into it and which when slide longitudinally open does not serve to drag or force accumulated dirt into the reservoir as is the case with some other forms of priming cups. It may be conveniently operated Whether hot or cold and when open forms a large mouth in which to pour the priming charge.
Having thus described my invention What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- 1. A priming cup including a valve body and a screw valve, a reservoir connecting with the body, a cover to inelose the reservoir, connections between the valve stem and the cover whereby the cover is frictionally engaged and turned by the stem in a Way to open and close the reservoir, said connecions permitting a further movement of the valve stem independent of the cover.
A l priming cup comprising a body having a fluid passage therethrough, a screw valve to open and close said passage, a reser'voir located to one side of the said valve and connecting with the passage past the valve, a cover loosely pivoted upon the valve stem, a collar mounted to turn with the valve stem, connections of the collar with the cove whereby the latter may be made to turn therewith in a Way to open and close the reservoir, and means for normally holding the cover down upon the reservoir.
