CHARLES W. HUBBARD, JR., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
METHOD OF PRODUCING BOXES.
Application filed. April 21, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES HUBBARD, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Methods of Producing Boxes, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
This invention relates to the production of card-board boxes and is particularly 3.1:)". plicable to the manufacture of cigarette boxes or any type of box in which loose articles are held in position by a rubber band.
The object of the invention is to so attach the rubber band in the manufacture of the box that it will permanently hold and only give way upon a disruption of the material of the box itself.
In carrying out my invention I place the blank from which half of the box is to be made in a female die; I paste a rubber band upon the blank and cover the ends of the rubber band and part of the blank with a finishing paper. I then dish up the blank by causing a male die to press down upon the rubber band, finishing paper and blank forming dished sides to the paper and at the same time embedding the rubber band in the material of the blank. I then remove the pressure and attach a similar blank, either with or without the rubber band, to the first formed blank by a fabric hinge and the box is complete.
The scope of my invention will be pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigarette box such as contemplated by my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of one half of said box and a fragment of the adjacent half. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of one end of the box shown in Fig. 2 to bring out more clearly the embedding of the band in the material of the blank. Fig. 1 is a part sectional view of the dies used in the manufacture of these boxes.
As shown in the drawings particularly Fig. 4 I provide a female die 1 having curved sides to a recess 2. I provide a male die 3 having a projection 4 adapted to conform Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 833,425.
to the contour of the recess 2. The blank which is to form one half of a box is then placed across the die 1, this blank being indicated by the reference 5, and is of ordinary card-board box material. It may have a finished outside either of the ordinary glaze or a paper ornamental facing such as usual in the art. I then attach by glue an elastic band, preferably cloth covered type, indicated at 6, and I attach the ends of this band 6 to the blank beneath a rectangular finishing paper 7. I then cause the two dies to come into action and to dish up the sides of the paper blank 5, at the same time embedding the ends of the band into the material of the blank itself, particularly as shown in Fig. 8. I also locate this rubber band so that its free attached ends will each be secured on the upward slope of the side of the box so that when the box is completed there will be a space S between the band and the box bottom to enable the ready insertion of cigarettes or other articles.
I find by manufacturing the box in the manner herein described that I can fasten the elastic band in place so securely that the material of the box itself will give way before loosening of the band.
In carrying out this invention, details of construction may be varied from those shown, and yet the essence of the invention be retained; some parts might be employed without others, and new features thereof might be combined with elements old in the art in diverse ways, although the herein de scribed type is regarded as embodying substantial improvements over such modifications.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted in an illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is furthermore desired to be understood that the language used in the following claim is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of into a box side and to embed the band in the the invention which as a matter of language material of the box.
might be said to fall therebetween. "Signed at New York city, Y, this 13th I claim as my invention: day of April, 191%. The herein described method of producing C. W. HUBBARD, J 1:. a paper box consisting of attaching to a lVitnesses: blank an elastic band, subjecting the band F. Vermin lVRIGI-LT, and the blank to pressure to form the blank MAB'EL Drr'rnxrronmn.
