unrrnn snares earner enema ANTONIO GUSTIANA, OF SUDB'URY, ONTARIG, GANADA.
STEERING APPARATUS FOR VAIReIJRA-FT.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AN'roNio .GUSTIANA,
a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the town of Sudbury, in the dis- '5 trict of Algoma and Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steering Apparatusfor Air-Craft; and I hereby declare that the following is a naled in. an oscillating bearing'sojhat it .'can be turned in any direction with respect to the longitudinal axis of the aerial craft for causing the aerial craft to fly in the direction-required bv the aerial navigator, as.
hereinafter set forth and particularly pointed 'out in the claim.
Inthe drawings: Figure 1,'is a perspective view of the rudder and its related parts in their normal position; Fig. 2., is a plan View of the same,.showi ng the normal position of the rudder in full lines and'its'turm ing positions in dotted lines when changing the direction of the aerial craft to the ri ht or left; Fig. 3, is a side elevation showlng the normal position of the rudder-inffull lines and its turning positions in dotted lines when causing it to assume an upward or downward inclination and F ig'.,4, Z-is a front elevation of the steering apparatus.
'Like characters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and v drawings.
The rudder a is fixed on a shaft 6 jour- -1 ,1 naled in an oscillating bearing 0, and fixed on-the s aft 6 is a drum d, to which are I "1 ,connecte tiller ropes e whereby said rudder 1 0- can be caused to oscillate around the axis of;

full, clear, and i 10 exact description of the same.
Hyinvention relates to steering apparatus for aerial craft, in which the rudder is joun' to the leftin this case,

of the air craft j. Connected to the oscillating bearing 0 are tiller ropes m by which the bearing 0 causes the rudder to oscillate around the axis of the shaft.
The operation of the steering apparatus '55 1S as follows :Assuin ing that the air craft is advancing in a horizontal position, and it is desired to cause it to change its directii'in the tiller ropes do will be ,worked to turn. the oscillating frame so {1 so that the rudder a will assume an inclined position to the left of the longitudinal axis of the ai craft 7" and tail frame The rudder, in this case, being in a perpendicular plane, will cause the head of the air craft to swing to the left. If it is desired to change the-direction of the air-craft to the right, the oscillating frame 9 and rudder a are turned to the right causing a corresponding change of the headof the air '10 craft'to the right. If it is desired to cause the air craft to ly downward, the tiller ropes e are operated to turn the rudder a to a horizontal position. The tiller ropes m are then operated to oscillate the bearing 0 and turn rudder a in a downward direction, these movements of the rudder causing the head of the air craftto assume. a downward direction. If it is desired to cause the air craft to fly upward, the oscillating bearing c and rudder a are turned'in an upward direction.
If it is necessary at any time to combine the upward and downward direction with a change ofdirection to the right or left, the rudder can be turned into a tilted position to the right or left of its longitudinal axis above or below its normal horizontal position.
Having-thus fully described the nature of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A steering apparatus for air craft, comprising a forked-tail frame, an oscillating annular frame journaled between the forks thereof, means for turning the oscillating frame about its axis,; an oscillating annular bearing having hollow arbors journaled in the oscillating frame; wherehythe axis of the revolution of the oscillating bearing is at right angles to the oscillating frame, oscillating bearing or frame whereby the in) means for turning the oscillating bearing rudder can be turned into a horizontal plane independently of "the oscillating frame, a or into an angular relation therewith. rotatable shaft Cjiourlflialed in the oscillz fting Sudbury, May 27th, 1913.
