` Be it known that I, CHARLES S. BATDORF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, county ofl Kings;c State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crimper Mechanism, of which the following is a full, clear, and exaetpdescription.
My invention relates to article wrapping machines, such, for example, as the coin handling machine illustrated in my Patent No. 998,830, granted July 25, 1911, although it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to ,machines of this character, but is adapted for use in any machine of like nature intended for wrapping an article or plurality of articles of circular outline. The invention is particularly concerned with means in combination with suitable wrapper` applying mechanism for crimping or turning in the wrapper at the ends of the package in order that the wrapper may be securely heldthereon in such mannei` that the package cannot be tampered with or opened without so mutilating the wrapper as to make it impossible to replace the same.
A particular object of this invention is to so construct and arrange the crimper members or fingers that the latter will invariably adapt themselves automatically to the diam'.-

With these and other objects in view, as will appear from the following description, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, a preferred eml-odment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of so much of a coin wrapping machine as is necessary to illustrate my invention. The rear ends of the slides 18 are connected by a ltransverse bar 20 (Figs. 1 and 4), which extends through slots 21 (Fig. 4) inthe supporting plates 4 and 5 respectively, said slots 21 permitting forward and rear adjusting movement of the bar 20, together with the slides 18. The rock shaft 3 upon which 'the iear ends of the-supporting plates 4 and 5 are mounted, is provided with rock arms 22-22, which are connected by means of links 23-23 with the slides 18 mounted in the7 supporting plates 4 and 5 respectively. The rock shaft l3 is also provided with an actuating rocker arm 24 (Fig. 3) connected by means of a link 25 with rock arm 26 fixed to a second rock shaft 27 mounted in the side frames 1 above the shaft 3, and the latter shaft 27 has fixed thereto an actuating arm 28 with which an adjusting rod 29 is connected. Said adjusting rod extends forward to any convenient point of the machine, where it is provided with manually operable adjusting means coperating with an indicator dial, which parts may be similar to the means shown in my patent above referred to.

The rocking of shaft 3 will, through rock arm 22 and links 23', cause forward and backward movement of the slides 18, together with the cross bar 20 and studs 17, and since the studs` 17 work in slots at the point of crossing of the roll-carrying arms 10 and 14, as described, adjustment of the rolls 9 and 13 toward and from each other, to accommodate articles of different diameter, will thus be eifected.
The crimpingA mechanism proper is ping rolls 9 and 13, and is arranged for adjustment to correspond with the adjust-v ments of said rolls to accommodate articles of different diameter. .This crimping mechanism comprises the oppositely arranged crimper fingers 30 and 31 which are secured respectively to blocks 32 and 33, the latter being slidably mounted upon a supporting bar 34, carried b the depending arms 35-35 of a pair of yielding bell crank arms pivoted respectively at 36-36 upon the supporting arms 37-37 of supporting plates 3838. These sup ort/ing plates 38 are carried by the studs 1 and the transverse adjusting rod 20, which parts are secured to the slides 18, as heretofore described. Thus, the crimper fingers will be adjusted relatively to the wrapping rolls 9 and 13 simultaneously with the adjustment of said rolls toward and from each other, as described. The bell crank arms carrying the crimper finger supporting bar 34 are provided with rearward extensions 39 39 yieldingly held by springs 40-40 against stop surfaces 41-41 on the supporting arms 37. Each of the blocks 32 and 33 carrying the crimper fingers is provided with a depending fork 42 arranged tobe engaged by a cam arm 43, supported on a transverse shaft 44 mounted in the side frames of the machine. viewed from the front of the machine), is always brought to the same position relatively to the wrapping rolls and crimping mechanism, whatever the length of such article or stack of articles. Hence the Vcam 48 operating the left hand crimper finger 30 is fixed to the shaft 49.
In order to accommodate articles of different lengths, means are provided for adjusting the right hand crimperfinger 31 toward and from the crimper linger 3Q. To this end the cam 47 operating said finger 31 is laterally adjustable upon the shaft 49, but is splined thereto in order to rotate therewith. To effect this adjustment, the hub 50 of said cam 47 is provided with an annular slot 51, Fig. 4, to receive the forked end 52 of adjusting arm 53, which arm is clamped operated longitudinally by means of an ad- Y j usting lever 56 pivoted at 57 upon abracket 58 extending laterally from the side plate 1, Fig. 1.
Any suitable form of dial or indicator i means may be provided to coperate with the lever 56.to indicate the proper adjustment of the cam 47, and consequently of the right hand crimper finger 31, to correspond with the length of the article or stack of articles to be wrapped. To preserve uniformy ity of pressure of the spring 45 upon the right hand crimper arm 43, notwithstanding the lateral adjustment of the latter, the adjusting rod 55 has fixed thereto an arm 58 having a hub 582 slidably mounted on the transverse rod 44 and against which hub the rear end of the 45' abuts.
Referring to Figs. 10 and 11, 59 indicates I a swinging frame pivoted upon a transverse rock shaft 60, which is journaled in the side frames 1 of the machine, which swinging frame carries a third wrapping roll 61 adapted to coperate with the wrapping rolls 9 and 13theretofore described. Said third roll 61 has journaled upon its shaft a wrapper laying and tucking member comprising a frame 62 having a swinging wrapper laying blade 63 pivoted thereto and also a tucking blade 64, as described in my co-pending application Serial No. 551,641, filed the 11th day of April, 1910. In order to swing the third wrapping roll 61 into and out of operative position with respect to the rolls 9 and 13, the rock shaft has fixed thereto a pair of rock arms 65-65, which are connected With the frame 59 bv means of powerful springs 66. The shaft 60 is also provided with a caln arm 67 having a cam roll 68 adapted to engage a rotary cam 69 fixed to a shaft 70, journaled in the machine frame, which shaft 70 is provided with suitable connections with the power shaft of the machine for rotating the same, as described in my-Patent No. 998,830, above referred to. By the operative connections just described, the third wrapping roll 61 will be caused to move into operative position with respect to .the rolls 9 and 13, and will be held in such position during the wrapping operation by the action of the cam 69, and will then be returned to the article releasing position, as shown in Fig. 10, and retained in such position until another article or stack of articles is brought to wrapping position.
It is to be understood that the article or articles to be wrapped are first positioned or assembled upon a suitable support, such as the stack support shown and described in my Patent No. 998,330, from which they are conveyed to the wrapping rolls by means of suitable conveying mechanism. Mechanism for this purpose, as illustrated in part in Figs. 10 and 11, comprises an oscillating frame 71 carrying the oppositelv arranged adjustable gripper fingers 72. Said frame 71 is pivoted upon the shaft 70 and is adapted to be actuated from article receiving position adjacent said article or stack support to the position to deliver the article or articles to be wrapped to and between the wrapping rolls 9, 13 and 61. To this end, suitable cam connections are provided for said gripper frame 71, whereby the movements of said frame are properly timed to deliver successive articles or stacks of articles to said rolls at the completion of 'each wrapping operation, as fully described in my Patent No. 998,830 referred to.
Any, suitable wrapper supplying and .feeding mechanism may be provided. As
here shown, the same comprises a wrapper roll support 73, which is adjustably mounted on a transverse bar 71 of the machine frame, said support being preferably provided with wrapper straightening mechanism 75, as described in my co-pending application Serial No. 554,643, filed the 11th day of April 1910. The wrapper strip 76 is led from the supply roll between the feed roll 77 and the pressure roll 78, and thence over the severing knife or blade 79, by which suitable lengths of the wrapper strip, determined by the diameter of the article or articles to be wrapped, are cut, at the beginning of the wrapping operation. As will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 10, the end of the wrapper strip depending from the severing knife 79 extends transversely of the path of the article or` articles to be wrapped as the latter arey conveyed by the gripperarms to the feed rolls, and hangs just in front of the wrapper roll 61 and its wrapper laying and tucking devices. As the stack of articles to be wrapped is conveyed to wrapping position, it is first positioned by the gripper fingers 72 between the wrapper laying and tucking blades 63 and 61 of the wrapping devices, whereupon the feed roll 61 and gripper fingers 72, together with the articles to be wrapped, move together into wrapping p0- sition with respect to the wrapping rolls 9 and 13. The movable roll 61 is so arranged as to press the articles to be wrapped firmly against the rolls 9 and 13, with the wrapper strip introduced between the latter rolls and the article. The initial wrapping action of the rolls thereupon serves to'draw the wrapper strip over the severing blade 79 and to thus sever the proper length of strip to form the desired wrapper. Further rotation of the wrapping rolls 9, 13 and 61 rolls the strip snugly and firmly around the article, whereupon the crimper fingers 30 and 31 are moved inwardly under the influence of their springs 45 and -16 respectively, under the influence of the cams 47 and -18 respectively, whereby said fingers engage the ends of the wrapper strip projecting beyond the ends of the article or stack of articles and crimp said edges firmly down upon the opposite ends of the stack of articles, thus completing the package.
From the above description it will be seen that the crimper fingers 30 and 31 may `be adjusted from front to rear relatively `to the wrapping rolls 9, 13 and 61 to accomniodate articles or stacks of articles of different diameters. and, furthermore. by reason of the lateral adjustability of the right hand crimper arm 43, the right hand crimper finger 31 may be adjusted to operate upon articles or stacks of articles of different lengths.
In order that said fingers may invariably adapt themselves automatically to the diameter of the package and may be maintained at a uniform distance in from the edge of the package. notwithstanding variations in the adjustment of the wrapping mechanism or the crimping mechanism, the incurved crimping ends of said fingers are fixed with relation to the adjacent front faces of their supporting blocks 32 and respectively, and the supporting bar 34 carrying said blocks is yieldingly carried by the supporting arms 35, as heretofore described, so that when the article or stack of articles to be wrapped is brought into engagement with the wrapping rolls 9 and 13, the periphery of said article or stack of articles will simultaneously engage the forward faces of the crimper finger supporting blocks 3:2 and 33, and move the same, together with the fingers, slightly to the rear, it being understood that said supporting blocks in all positions of adjustment are yieldingly held a little in advance of the position assumed by the periphery of the article or stack of articles between the wrapping rolls 9 and 13. By this means the crimper fingers will be automatically positioned at a uniform distance in from the edge of the periphery of said article or stack, and the crimped ends or edges of the wrapper will therefore always be of uniform thick-ness and of a thickness sufiicient to hold the wrapper securely and firmly in place upon the article or articles wrapped.
While I have herein described a particular embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same may be varied in detail and relative arrangement of parts within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In an article wrapping machine, the combination with a plurality of wrapping rolls, of means for conveying an article or a stack of articles into operative engagement with said rolls, and crimper mechanism comprising a pair ofV oppositely arranged crimper fingers adapted to engage the extremities of the wrapper and to crimp the same down upon the opposite ends of said article or stack of articles during the wrapping operation and means to cause said fingers to automatically conform to the diameter of said stack by contact of said fingers therewith.
2. In an article wrapping machine, the combination with a plurality of wrapping rolls and means to convey an article or stack.
of articles into wrapping position with respect to said rolls, of crimping mechanism adjacent said rolls and comprising a pair of oppositely arranged crimper fingers, and means to cause said fingers to move toward each other to crimp the opposite extremities of the wrapper upon the ends of said article or stack of articles during thewrapping operation and means to cause said fingers to automatically conform to the diameter of said stack bycontact of said lingers therewith.
l 3. In an article wrapping machine, the combination with a pair ofcwrapping rolls and a third wrapping roll arranged to be moved into and out of wrapping position with respect to said pair of rolls, of means for conveying an article or stack of articles to be wrapped to said rolls, crimping mechanism comprising a pair of oppositely arranged crimper fingers located between the rolls of said pair` and means for moving said fingers toward each other to crimp the ends of the wrapper down upon the opposite ends of the article or stack of articles to be wrapped during the wrapping operation and means to cause said fingers to automatically conform to the diameter of said stack by contact of said fingers therewith.
4. In an article wrapping machine, the combination with a pair of wrapping rolls, of a third wrapping roll constructed and arranged to be moved into and out of operative position with respect to said pair, means for conveying an article or stack of articles into wrapping position with respect to said rolls, and crimping mechanism comprising a pair of oppositely arranged crimper fingers adapted to crimp the ends of the wrapper upon the opposite ends of said article or articles, said crimper fingers being yieldingly mounted and arranged to be automatically positioned by the articles according to the diameter of the article or articles to be wrapped when said articles are conveyed to said rolls.
5. In an article wrapping machine, the combination with a plurality of wrapping rolls, of means for conveying an article or stack of articles into wrapping position with respect to said rolls, crimper mechanismA adjacent said rolls comprising a pair of crimper fingers, and means for causing said fingers to approach each other to crimp the endsA of the wrapper upon the opposite ends of the article or articles being Wrapped, said fingers being yieldingly mounted in the path of said articles to said rolls whereby said articles will cause said fingers to conform to the diameter of said article or articles.
6. In an article wrapping machine, the
- combination with a pair of wrapping rolls,
of means for relatively adjusting said rolls to accommodate articles of different diameters to be wrapped, a third wrapping roll having means to move the same into and out of operative position with respect to said pair, means for conveying an article or stack of articles to Wrapping position between said rolls, and crimping mechanism com` prising a pair of crimper fingers located adjacent said rolls to crimp the ends of the wrapper upon the opposite ends of the article or articles to be wrapped, and means for adjusting said crimper fingers simultaneously with the adjustment of said wrapper rolls and means to permit saidv articles to cause said fingers to conform to the diameter of said articles..
7. In an article wrapping machine, the combination of a plurah o wrapper rolls,
means for adjusting said rolls to accommodate articles of different diameters to be wrapped, means for conveying an article or stack of articles to said rolls, crimper mechanism comprising a pair of crimper fingers constructed and arranged to crimp the ends of the wrapper against the opposite end of said article or articles during the wrapping operation, and means for adjusting said crimping mechanism simultaneously with the adjustment of said rolls, said fingers being yieldingly mounted in the path of said articles to permit the latter to cause said fingers to conform accurately to the diameter of the article or articles to be wrapped.
8. In an article Wrapping machine, the combination with a plurality of Wrapping rolls, means for conveying an article or stack of articles to be wrapped to said rolls, crimper mechanism located adjacent said rolls and comprising a pair of oppositely arranged crimper fingers arranged to crimp the ends of the wrapper down upon the opposite ends of the article or articles to be Wrapped, said fingers having supports adaptedI to be engaged by the perimeter of the package when in wrapping position whereby said engagement will cause said fingers to be maintained at a uniform distance within the perimeter of the package.
9. In an article wrapping machine, the combination of a plurality of Wrapping rolls. means for conveying an article or stack of articles to be wrapped to said rolls, crimper mechanism located adjacent said rolls and comprising a pair of oppositely arranged crimper fingers, arranged to crimp the ends of the Wrapper down upon the opposite ends of the article or stack of articles to be Wrapped, one of said fingers being fixed against lateral movement and the other of said fingers being adjustable to accommodate articles or stacks of articles of different lengths, and means for causing said fingers to engage the opposite ends of said wrappers to crimp the same during the wrapping operation, said means including means operable by the movement of said articles to said rolls to cause said fingers to conform to the diameter of said articles.
10. In an article wrapping machine, the combination of a plurality of Wrapping rolls, means for conveying an article or stack of articles to be wrapped to said rolls, crimper mechanism located adjacent said rolls and comprising a pair of oppositely arranged crimper fingers, arranged to crimp the ends of the wrapper down upon the opposite ends of the article or stack of articles to be wrapped, one of said fingers being fixed against lateral movement and the other of said fingers bein adjustable to accommodate articles or sta of articles Aof different lengths, and means for causing said fingers to engage the oppositeends of said Wrappers to crimp the same during the wrapping op- A eration, said fingers being mounted in the path of said article upon yielding supports, whereby they may be automatically positioned with respect to the perimeter of the article or articles by contact of said article or articles with said supports.
11.In an article wrappingk machine, the combination with a plurality of wrapping rolls, means for conveying an. article or stack of articles to be wrapped to said rolls, crimper mechanism located adjacent said rolls and comprising a pair of oppositely arranged crimper fingers adapted to crimp the ends of the wrapper down upon the opposite ends of the article or articles to be wrapped, supporting arms for said fingers, means for adjusting said fingers and rolls radially from a common center, a rotary cam engaging each of said arms, meansfor with said cams, whereby said crimper 1ingers may be permitted to move toward each other by said cams during the crimping operation.

In an article Wrapping machine, the combination with a plurality of Wrapping rolls, means for conveying an article or stack of articles to be wrapped to said rolls, crimper mechanism comprising a pair of op,- positely arranged crimper fingers adapted to crimp the ends of the wrapper down upon the opposite ends of said article or articles during the Wrapping operation, supporting arms or said fingers, a laterally fixed rotary cam engaging one of said arms, alaterally the ends of the Wrapper down upon the opposite ends of the article or articles to be wrapped, supporting blocks carrying said fingers, a supporting bar upon which said blocks are adj ustably mounted, said bar being yieldingly mounted whereby said iingers may automatically adjust themselves to the diameter of the article to be wrapped by contact of said article with said supporting blocks.
15. In an article Wrapping machine, the combination of a plurality of Wrapping rolls, adjustable arms carrying said rolls, fixed supports to which said arms are pivoted, adjusting members on said supports arranged to adjust said rolls toward and from each other, crimper mechanism carried by said adjusting members whereby said mechanism may be adjusted simultaneously with said rolls, said crimper mechanism comprising a pair of oppositely arranged crimper fingers, said fingers being yieldingly supported to permit the same to adaptthemselves automatically tothe diameter of the article or articles to be Wrapped by contact with said articles, and means for manually adjusting said rolls and crimping mecha- 16. In an article Wrapping machine, the combination with wrapping members, and means for conveying a stack of articles into Wrapping position with respect to said members, of crimper mechanism comprising a pair of crimper fingers said lingers and members being adjustably radially from a common center to accommodate articles of different diameters.
19. In an article wrapping machine the combination with article wrapping members, and means for conveying a stack of articles into wrapping position with respect thereto of crimper mechanism comprising crimper lingers adjustable cordinately with `said members radially from a common center i said iingers being adjustable also longitudinally of said stack of articles.
