Specification of Letters yatent.

Application filed May 12, 1914. Serial No. 837,874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN F. KLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkesburg, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Snap- Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in snap buttons, and more particularly to what I term a three-in-one button, as I provide in the socket member a plurality of sockets to receive in any of them the stud member so as to permit an adjustment of the parts connected by the snap button members.
A further object is to provide a snap button which is especially adapted for use in connection with gloves and other similar articles, and which is so constructed as to facilitate its attachment to the glove or other article, and which is neat and attractive in appearance, strong and durable in use.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a View in elevation illustrating the outer face of my improved socket member. Fig. 2 is a view in longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inner face view of the socket member. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the blank from which the body portion of the socket member is made, and Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1 illustrating a modified shape of socket member.
1 and 2 represent the two overlapping portions of the glove or other article to be connected by my improved snap button.
3 is the stud member of the snap button which is attached to the part 2 in any approved manner and is provided with the ordinary stud 4: of general spherical. shape.
The socket member 5 comprises two parts, namely, a body portion 6 and a socket plate 7. The body portion 6 is formed from a single blank as shown clearly in Fig. 4. This blank consists of a flat sheet of metal with spurs 8 around the edge thereof. The intermediate portion of the blank is bent by means of dies or other suitable mechanism into a general convex shape forming a hollow body as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The edge of the blank is bent inwardly forming an annular flange 9, and the spurs 8 are positioned at right angles to the flange at the inner edge of the latter and in position to be forced through the part 1 and thence through slots 10 in plate 7, so that when the spurs are bent backwardly against the face of plate 7 as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3, the socket member will be fixed to the goods.
It is to be understood that a portion of the part 1 will be cut out so as to allow a free entrance of the stud 4 into the socket member. The plate 7 is provided with a longitudinal slot 11, the walls of which are scalloped or curved to provide avseries of sockets 12 located in alinement and of a size to receive in any of them the stud 4. By means of this plurality of sockets, the parts 1 and 2 are permitted a certain amount of adjust- I ment relative to each other, as the stud may be positionedin any of the sockets and then afterward in other of the sockets as adjustment is desired.
WVhen my improved socket member is made of circular form as shown in Fig. 1, it will resemble the ordinary button,but I may change the shape of this socket member, one modification being shown in Fig. 1 in which the socket member is made elliptical.
By reference particularly to Fig. 2, it will be noted that the inwardly projecting flange 9 serves as a wall or abutment against the outer face of the portion 1, and positions the convex intermediate portion of the body so as to provide an ample space for the accommodati on of the stud in any of its positions of adjustment.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention. and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A snap button comprising a hollow body and a flat face, said flat face having a longitudinal slot therein, the walls of which are scalloped or curved providing a series of sockets adapted to receive av stud in any of them, substantially as described.
2. A snap button comprising a stud memher and a socket member, the socket member consisting of a body portion and a plate, the
body portion consisting of a single piece of metal having its intermediate portion eonvex with its edge projected inwardly, and spurs formed at the inner edge of the flange and projected at right angles thereto, said plate having slots therein to receive the spurs, the latter adapted to be bent back- Wardly against the face of the plate, and said plate having a longitudinal slot, the
