MOVING ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 1, 1914. Serial No. 848,324.
tion of the on-looker, to which end, among other things, a device has been contrived embodying an element of mystery and which relates to a topic of general interest.
Other objects of the invention are simplicity of construction, cheapness of manufacture and portability.
These and other features, capabilities and advantages of the invention will appear from the detailed description of one specific embodiment thereof illustrated in the ac companying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective showing a full sized embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the moving figure of said device; and Figs. 3 and 4 are elevation and plan views respectively of the driving mechanism detached.
In the embodiment shown, a frame resembling a theatrical stage is provided having a floor 1, a roof 2', and side walls 3 supporting said roof 2 above said floor 1. For
the purpose of ornamentation, the front opening between the side walls 3 is provided with fantastically cut borders 4:, one secured to each side wall 3 and havlng an opening between them through which to observe the performance on the floor 1 of the stage. In the resulting chamber formed by said floor, roof and side walls, there is suspended a fig.- ure 5 by a supporting means 6 which in the preferred form is practically invisible such as a hair. The figure 5 is preferably one having two or more lower limbs 7 such as the figure of a girl illustrated.
The supporting means 6 is secured to and driven by any suitable driving means. In the present instance the upper end of the supporting means 6 is fastened to a pin 8 fixed to a pinion 9 in mesh with a spur gear 10 which is fastened to and adapted to be driven by a hair-spring 11.
A suitable housing 12 incloses'said driving mechanism through the roof of which protrudes'akey-stem 13 on which a thumb-piece 14: is secured for winding up the hair-spring 11, the lower end of the key-stem 13 forming the arbor on which the spur gear 10 is mounted.
The supporting means 6 is attached to the pin 8 and whenever the pin rotates, the supporting means will rotate and in turn will twist the figure 5.
The length of the figure 5 and supporting means 6 is preferably such that one or mom of the lower limbs of the figure 5 will just barely touch the floor 1. Thus when the figure is turned around, one lower limb will at one time touch the floor and at another turn, the other lower limb, or both, by means of which the figure passes through a series of movements resembling certain of the modern dances. The supporting means 6 is preferably secured to the figure '5 in a line extending through the axis of the figure which passes intermediate the lower extremities 15 of the lower limbs 7 Such positioning of the supporting means has been found desirable to obtain the forementioned movements of the figure. Obviously to obtain other movements it might be necessary marionette.
2. The combination of a floor, a marionette, a flexible string for suspending said marionette so that it barely touches the floor, and means for turning said string on its axis to actuate said marionette.
3. The combination of a floor, a figure, a hair for suspending said figure so that it Patented Nov. 24, 1914.
barely touches said floor, and means for turning said hair on its axis to actuate said figure.
4c. The combination of a floor a figure hzwing a plurality of lower limbs, the lower ends of said limbs lying out of the axis of said figure, a frame, a flexible string for suspending said figure from said frame so that the lower ends of one or more of said lower limbs barely touch said floor, and means for turning said flexible string on its axis to actuate said figure.
5. The combination of a floor, a figure having a plurality of lower limbs, the lower ends of said lower limbs lying outsideof the axis of said figure, a frame, a hair for suspending said figure from said frame so that the lower ends of one or more of said lower limbs barely touch said floor, and rotating means for turning said hair on its axis to actuate said figure whereby the contact of the lower limbs With said floor will actuate said figure through movements similar to dancing.
6. The combination with a frame, of a figure, a hair for suspending said figure from said frame, and rotating means for turning said hair on its axis comprising a pinion, a spur gear in mesh with said pinion, a hair spring fastened to, and adapted to drive said spur gear, a pin fixed to rotate with said pinion, said hair being secured to said pin to be turned on its axis by the rotation of said pin.
