IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-PRESSES.

The Schedule refen'ed to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom 'it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HERMAN H. ALMs, of Kansas city, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement iu Tobacco-Presses for `lilling bags or packages of smoking-tobacco and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, ele-ar, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures marked thereon.

The object of my invention is to provide a ready means for illing packages of smoking-tobacco of the various sizes required by the revenue regulations in so compact a manuel' as to be conveniently and cheaply transported.

It consists in the combination oi' parts, and is operated as hereinafter described.

The parts of this press consist of a stout frame, a, g. 1, constructed ol' wood or iron, or other suitable material.

The rammel' b, iig. 1, is aiiixed to a head, s s', with slides working in grooves in the frame, and is connected to the cam c', iig. '1,by which it is operated, hy

a jointed rod, (l d'. The amount oi' pressure to be applied can he regulated by means of the holes t t' t" in the cam, through which the jointed rod is passed.

The weight e, fig. 1, which can be'increased to any amount desired by hooking or bolting. on additional pieces of metal, is attached to this cani by a belt or chain passing from its upper point c over the roller f.

Another belt or chain is also attached to the same point of this cam c, whereby the pulleys t' if i" are turned, drawing up by the one motion the belt or chain holding the'weight g, fig. 2, and operating the cam h, fig. 2.

I This cam lifts the slide to which the funnel-bracket is attached, which slide, like the rammer-head, works in grooves in the frame.

lhe treadle k, iig. 1, is attached to the cam by a strap or chain, as shown at l, iig. l. W'hen this treadle is pressed down, 'the notched lower end of the lever ou, fig. 2, by means of the spring u, catches and holds it down, thus setting the press for use.

A check-lever and spring, 0, iig. 3, holds the cam h until the remmer has descended.

A pin attached to the rammer-head throws off this check-lever at the proper moment to withdraw the funnel.

The rainmer is attached to the head by a tenonjoint and pin, p, andcan be removed like the mold, when a dierent sized package is required.

The press is operated by pressing thefoot upon the treadle 7.: to set it for use. drawn over the funnel q, and placed inthe mold r, and the required quantity of tobacco poured in. By now pressing upon the lever 1n', the weight c, by means of the cam c and jointed rod d, forces down the rammer b and compresses the tobacco, the weight g.

and cam 71- drawing out the funnel immediately. The press being again set by pressing down the treadle, the rammel' is removed, and the bag, after being folded over or fastened, taken from` the mold.

The machine can be operated by a boy or girl, requiring but little manual strength. It saves the tedious labor now required in the hand-process of filling tobacco-bags, and secures much more compact and neat packages of uniform size. Molds of different sizes are required, according to the size of package to be lled.

That I claim as of my invent-ion, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. lhe cam c, constructed as described, with belt and weight e, in combination with and operated by the treadle le, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The arrangement of the treadle k, lever an, and spring n, in combination with and operating the two cams c and h, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.

3. The arrangement of the cam h and pulleys 'i t' li", in combination with the weight g and treadle k, substantial-ly as described.

4. The movable rammel' b and head s, in combination with the jointed rod d and cam c, constructed asdescribed and for the purposes set forth.

5. The combination of cheek-lever and spring o with thecam h, pulleys el 'i' i", weight g, and pin on the rammer-head, arranged substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.

6. 'The automatic sliding funnel-bracket, Voperated by means of the cam h and weight g, substantially as shown and set forth.
