To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS J. DAL-Ton, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Paper-Holder and Display Device, of which the following is a specificatioin' This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a combination paper holder and display device.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described adapted to hold paper towels and paper for other toilet uses and embodies also a display mechanism whereby signs, or data of any character, may be displayed, said mechanism being operated as the paper is unwound from the roll.

lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction and operation, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein,

Referring now to the drawings, the numeral 1 refers to the casing which is a boxlike structure whose lower portion 1 extends out in front farther than the upper portion 1. Secured toeach end of the box, on the inside, is an approximately triangular support, or brace, as 2 whose forward sides are inclined. as shown. and the inclined side of each brace has a' semi-circular bearing as 3, in which the shaft 4:, on which the spool 5 is mounted rests and in which it rotates. This spool is provided to receive the roll of towels or paper. A bar, as 6 is arranged at each end of the box 1, and hinged thereto at its lower end. These bars normally lie upon the inclined sides of the braces 2 and have semi-circular recesses, such as 7 which receive the ends of the shaft 4 and hold them in place.

are rotatable in suitable fixed bearings and the shafts 15 are rotatable in suitable sliding bearings, as 16 which slide in the members 17 depending from the top of the box on each side. Each bearing 16 is slidably mounted on a rod 18 which is threaded through the top of the box'and the lower end of each rod has an enlarged'head 18 interposed between which and .thebearings 16 are coil springs 18 forming 'a resilient cushion for the bearings 16. 12 and 13 and in front of the window 20 in the front of the portion 1 of the box and said apron is designed to carry signs and advertising matter which will be displayed through the window 20. It is obvious that as the tension'on the springs 18 is increased the roller 12 will be more difficult to, turn and as said roller is operatively connected with the spool 5 the roll of paper may thus be prevented from unwind ing too freely.

Each end of the box has on the inside, pulleys 21, 22 and 23 upon which elastic cords or tapes as 24 operate. The pulleys are so positioned that the cords 24: will press against the paper roll and also prevent it from unwinding too freely. This expedient for preventing the free unwind- It is obvious that as the paper is drawn out and the roll unwinds the gear Wheel 10 will turn and in turn the gear Wheel 11 and roller 12 will berotated. This will operate the apron l9 and the signs, or other matter printed thereon will be successively brought before the window 20.

"What I claim is 1. A device of the character described including a casing, a rotatable spool mounted therein and provided to receive a roll of fabric, a covering for the casing, hinged thereto and having a transverse slot through which the free end of the fabric projects, said fabric being arranged so that a pull on the free end thereof will rotate the spool, a plurality of pulleys arranged in the easing and a cord operating over said pulleys and pressing against the roll of fabric wound on said spool.

2. A device of the character described including a casing, bearing members at each end thereof, each having a semi-circular recess in its upper side, a rotatable spool provided to receive a roll of fabric, a supporting shaft carrying said spool and Whose ends rest in said respective recesses, a bar arranged at each end of the casing and hinged thereto at its lower end, each bar having a semi-circular recess in its underside, a covering for the casing, hinged thereto and having a transverse slot through which the free end of the fabric projects,

said covering, when closed, resting against said bars and holding them in position upon 9 said bearing member, said fabric being ar ranged so that a pull on the free end thereof will rotate the spool.

3. A device of the character described including a casing, bearing members at each end thereof, each having a semi-circular recess in its upper side, a rotatable spool provided to receive a roll of fabric, a supporting shaft carrying said spool and whose ends rest in said respective recesses, a bar arranged at each. end of the casing and hinged thereto at its lower end, each bar having a semi-circular recess in its underside, a covering for the casing, hinged thereto and having a transverse slot through which the free end of the fabric projects, said covering, when closed resting against said bars and holding them in position upon said bearing member, said fabric being arranged so that a pull on the free will rotate the spool and means in contact with said spool and operating in resistance to the rotation thereof.
