CHICKEN-TRAINING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented N ov. 17, 1914.
Application filed .Tune 3, 1912, Serial No. 701,171. Renewed April 16, 1914. Serial No. 832,394.
T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WiLLIAM FRANK Kann, a citizen of the United States, residing at Silverton, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chicken- Training Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device arranged so that chickens will roost immediately after they leave the brooder, without injury to themselves. Previous to my invention the chickens were turned from the brooder into a house where they crowded into corners and some were crushed or smothered to death.
The object of my invention is to provide an article of this kind that is simple in construction, durable and inexpensive in manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be made clearly apparent in the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section and side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2, is a plan view with the top removed, and F ig. 3 is an end elevation of Fig. l.
In the practice of my invention I employ a housing l, with columns 2, attached to each end of said housing. Said columns 2,are perforated as shown to receive pins 3, on which rest stringers l, containing a plurality of grooves 5, which receive rails 7. Between columns Q, at one end of housing 1, is placed a semicircular Guard 8, which is detachably fastened at both ends by means of brackets 9. Said guard 8, prevents the chickens from crowding in the corners of housing l. As the chickens enter housing l, through door l0, from the brooder, they begin to roost immediately on rails 7. iVhen the chickens grow larger, every other rail will be removed. Housing l, is provided with a window 1l, for the purpose of lighting the inside of said housing, and a lid l2, to let in air, said lid being fastened to one side of said housing by means of hinges 13.
My improved chicken-training device may be constructed of any material, and made of any size deemed suitable for such a device, and while I have described a preferred form of construction and combination of elements considered essential in materializing my invention, I wish to include in this application all mechanical equivalents and substitutes that may be considered to come within the scope and purview of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may be able to construct and use the same, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a device for training chickens to roost immediately after leaving the brooder, the combination with a rectangular housing, of perpendicular columns with an open side and two parallel sides, stringers with grooves therein itting between the parallel sides of said columns, means to support said stringers, detachable rails in said grooves, a semicircular, vertically-adjustable guard at either end of the housing, and Z-shaped brackets to prevent said guard from longitudinal motion, substantially as described.
2. In a device for training chickens to roost immediately after leaving the brooder, the combination with a rectangular housing, of perpendicular columns substantially U- shaped in cross-section, stringers with transverse grooves therein iitting between the parallel sides of said columns to prevent lateral motion of said stringers, detachable rails resting in said grooves, means to support said stringers, a scmicircular, vertically-adjustable guard at either end of the housing, and Z-shaped brackets to prevent longitudinal motion of said guard, substantially as described.
3. In a device for training chickens to roost immediately after leaving the brooder, the combination with a rectangular housing, of perpendicular columns substantially U- shaped in cross-section, stringers with portions thereof tting between the parallel sides of said U-shaped columns, transverse grooves in said stringers, rails detachably fastened in said grooves, means to support said stringers, a semicircular, verticallyadjustable guard at either end of the housing, as my own I hereuntoaix my signature in and Z-shaped brackets to receive the ends the presence of two Witnesses.
of said guard for the purpose of preventing WILLIAM FRANK KERR Said guard from longitudinal motion with relation to the housing, substantially as Witnesses:

In testimony that I claim the foregoing CHARLES L. PAGE.
