Be it known that I, ROBERT S. RILEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Providence, Providence county, Rhode Island, have invented certain Improvements in Stop Mechanism for lVinches, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide a relatively simple form of mechanism whereby a gipsy or winch head may be driven from a line shaft, preferably extending at right angles to the axis of revolution of said head; the invention also contemplating novel means whereby the winch head may be instantaneously disconnected from the driving shaft and thereafter immediately locked from turning in a reverse direction.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide a gipsy or winch head with novel means whereby it is normally maintained in operative connection with a continuously driven shaft or other source of power while being capable of being disconnected therefrom and locked in such position that it can not turn in a direction opposite that at which it has been driven; the invention also contemplating an improved clutching device for permitting the driving or holding of the gipsy head, as well as means whereby the clutching device may be locked in one of its several positions.
These objects and other advantageous ends I secure as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is an elevation, partly in vertical section, illustrating the detail features of my invention; Fig. 2, is a plan of the apparatus shown in F ig. 1; Fig. 3, is a vertical section on an enlarged scale showing the construction of the foot operated plun ger, and Fig. el, is a side elevation of the clutching device.
In the above drawings, l represents any suitable supporting structure such as the deck of a vessel, awharf, or the like, shown as mounted upon a metal structure 2 carried on channels 3. 0n this support is mounted a casting 4L constituting a bearing for a vertical shaft 5, to the upper end of which is fixed the gipsy or winch head SThe lower end of said shaft has fixed to it a beveled gear 7 which meshes with a beveled pinion 8 fixed to and in the present instance form- Speccation of Letters Patent.

ing part of a sleeve 9 loosely mounted on a continuously driven line shaft `10. One of the bearings for this shaft is indicated at 1l; the sleeve 9 being journaled in this bearing and itself serving to directly support the shaft. Fixed to said shaft is a clutch sleeve 12 having a series `of teeth 17 on that one of its edges which is directed toward the loose sleeve 9. A third sleeve 13 is slidably mounted on a bushing carried by the shaft 10 and also upon the sleeve 9 so that it is free to move longitudinally of this latter, to which it is fixed, however, by splines 9a. That face or edge of the bearing 1l adjacent this movable sleeve 13 is provided with a set of teeth lei and said sleeve has one set of teeth 15 adjacent the teeth 14 and a second set of teeth 16 adjacent the set of teeth 17 on the sleeve 12. lVithin the slidable sleeve 13 and abutting on one end of the sleeve 9 is a spring 18 acting on said movable sleeve so as to normally maintain its teeth 16 in engagement with the teeth 17 of the sleeve 12.
For the purpose of sliding the sleeve 13, I pivot a bell crank lever 19 to the bearing structure 11 and make one of its arms in forked or branched form so as to extend around said sleeve 13, providing said arm with pins 20 designed to enter an annular recess 21 of the sleeve. The other arm of the lever is connected to the trunnions 22 of a block 23, mounted, as shown in Fig. 3, on a stud 24Cscrewed into a plunger 25, which is guided in the deck or other structure 1 by means of a casting 26 in the form of a bushing. The plunger 25 is provided with a shoulder 27 preferably at or adjacent its upper end, and there is slidably mounted in the casting 2G so as to be movable toward and from said plunger, a bolt 28 whose head is formed to engage the shoulder 27 when the plunger is in its lower position in order to retain it in such position.
Under operating conditions, the line shaft l0 is continuously driven from a suitable source of power, and inasmuch as the spring 1S holds the slidable member 13 in such position that its teeth 16 engage the teeth 17, power is transmitted from said shaft through the sleeves 12, 13 and 9 to the beveled pinion S, through the gear 7, to the shaft 5 and to the winch or gipsy head 6. purpose and if at any time the cable employed upon-it should foul or it should become necessary for any other reason to disconnect said head from the source of power, the plunger is pushed down by the foot of the operator, thereby turning the bell crank lever 19 on its pivot. The sleeve 13 isthus disengaged from the teeth 17 of the Jsleeve 12 and immediately thereafter the teeth 15 of saidsleeve 13 are engaged with the fixed teeth 14: on the bearing structure 11, so that not only is the gipsy head no longer driven, but by reason of the construction and placing of the two sets of teeth, it is immediately thereafter locked or held from turning in a direction the reverse of that at which it has previously been turned. lf the vpressure be removed from the plunger 25, the spring 18 immediately returns the sleeve 13 into its normal position with its teeth 16 inengagement with the teeth 17, thereby again causing the gipsy head to be dri en from the shaft 10. On the other hand if it be desired that the head be re tained in its locked position-in order to hold a load, the bolt 28 is `moved longitudinally While the plunger 25 is depressed, thereby bringing its head into engagement With the shoulder 2f and preventing upward move ment of the plunger and disengagement of the teeth 15 from the teeth 14 under the action of the spring 1S.
