Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES ALEXANDER PORTER, OF BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.
Patented Nov. 17, 1914.
SIZING.
1,117,902 Specification of Letters Patent.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES A. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented an Improvement in Sizing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in compositions of matter, especially those which are designed to be used for sizing walls preparatory to painting the same, and it consists in the combination of ingredients hereinafter set forth and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
An object of my invention is to provide a sizing which may be applied to a calcimined wall having lime or other alkali, and which will not crack or scale off from the effects of such lime or alkali, but which will have a smooth and uncracked surface.
A further object of my invention is to provide a sizing of the type described from which a coat of paint, which has been placed over the sizing, may be removed by burning and scaling off without affecting the sizing beneath.
A further object of my invention is to provide a sizing which is made of ingredients that are readily obtainable and are comparatively cheap.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In carrying out my invention I make use of the following ingredients, to Wit: white lead, boiled linseed oil, varnish, Japan drier and a syrup such as ribbon cane molasses or sorghum, or other similar syrup.
In order to make up a gallon of the sizing I use three pounds of white lead, three pints of boiled linseed oil, one-half gallon of varnish, one gill of Japan drier and one pint of syrup or molasses. After the ingredients have been brought together in the amounts specified, they are thoroughly mixed and when thoroughly mixed the sizing is ready for use. A sizing prepared as set forth above counteracts the effect of the Application filed March 10, 1914. Serial No. 823,693.
lime and alkali in the calcimine of the walls on which it is placed. The molasses or syrup sours in this mixture and the result is a mild acid which kills the lime and alkali. Ordinary sizings when placed on walls over calcimining will crack and scale off but the sizing which forms the subject of the present invention will retain its smooth unbroken surface.
My improved sizing may be used over calcimine without washing the calcimine off.
After the sizing has been placed on a wall and allowed to dry thoroughly a coating of paint of any kind may be placed over the sizing and if later, one desires to remove the paint, it can be removed by burning and scaling off without affecting the sizing beneath.
Alkali and lime in wall plastering does not cause spots in paint which is placed over my improved sizing because the alkali and lime cannot come through the sizing to the paint.
The sizing is a good base for enameling bath tubs. The sizing is placed on the tub and then allowed to dry for twenty-four hours and afterward a flat coating and an enamel finishing coat is applied. The sizing underlying the enamel will not break off in flakes as other bases frequently do.
The molasses or syrup in the sizing makes the sizing more elastic and prevents it from drying and cracking and scaling off as is customary with the ordinary sizing.
I have used several different kinds of varnish and driers and I find that all of them give the most favorable results.
I claim The herein described composition of mat ter for sizings which consists of the following ingredients in the proportions specified, to wit: three pounds white lead, three pints boiled linseed oil, one-half gallon varnish, one gill Japan drier, one pint syrup.
