SAFETY APPLIANCE FOR ELEVATORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1'7, 1914.
Application filed March 3. 1914. Serial No. 822,154.
To all whom it may concern 3e it known that l, Jorrx Mnrzkaosv, subject of the Kingof f-lungary, resident of Newark. in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey. have made a certain new and useful Invention in Safety Appliances for Elevators: and I declare the following to be a full, Clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which. form a part of this specification.
Figure 1. is a central vertical section of the invention as applied, with parts broken away, and the electrical contacts in normal. position. Fig. 2 is a detail central vertical section of the electrical contacts and adjacent parts, said contacts being shown as separated or released, and parts being shown as broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the elevator floor partly broken away, showing the opening therein, the cover being removed.
The invention has relation to safety applifor its object to provide movable means carried by the elevator below the floor of the same, and adapted upon contact with an obstruction in the shaft of the elevator, to break the electrical circuit of the motor drive, and instantly stop the motor and the elevator.
A further object is to provide an elevator door, which when closed will close the motor drive circuit, and when opened will open said circuit, so that the elevator cannot be started until the door is closed, said door being prevented from being opened except at landings.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.
in the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral 1, designates an elevator car, and 2, a movable means below the floor of the same, preferably a platform, suspended by chains 3 The electrical circuit of the motor drive is normally completed by contacts located below the car floor, said contacts being forced out of engagement with each other by movement upwardly of the platform 2, in the case stated, and comprising usually a movable vertical rod 4:, in normal engagement at its lower end with the other contact 5, to complete the circuit, said rod having movement in a non-conducting block (3, having suitable supports 7 from the car floor, and the contact being carried by the platform, so that pressure of the contact 5, in the upward movement of the platform, upon the lower end of the rod r, will force said rod upwardly and break the circuit. The contact 5 is provided with a spring 8, to insure its engagement with the movable rod, said spring being normally under tension.
Releasable spring means is provided to hold the rod t in depressed position, being usually opposite spring gripsi), engaging a seat or groove 10 of the rod, said grips being forced apart in the upward movement of the rod and closing again below a shoulder 11, of the rod to aid in holding it in raised position. The upward movement of the rod is continued by a spring 12 surrounding the rod, said spring serving also to hold the rod in raised position. The rod. ti may be moved downwardly to normal position by raising the cover 13 over the opening it of the car floor, and exerting pressure upon the exposed upper end of said rod until the spring grips are forced apart and reengaged with the groove or seat of the rod, the spring 12 being at same time put under tension again. The platform 2 being suspended by chains at several points is yieldable upwardly upon contact with an obstruction at any part of he platform to move the rod l upwardly and break the electrical circuit, and should the. platform be moved slightly to one side at the same time, the spread head 5 of the contact 5 will still insure engagement with the rod l and the breaking of the circuit.
The invention is designed to prevent accidents to a person at the bottom of the shaft or well, or to any one who may expose his head, arm or other part through a doorway or otherwise in the elevator shaft.
That I claim is 1. A. safety appliance for elevators having an electric motor drive, including an upwardly movable means located below and suspended from the car floor, a contact carried by and movable with said means, a non-conductor block supported from the car floor, a second vertically movable rod contact working therein and normally engaged the with the other contact, and means for disengaging the contacts and breaking the drive circuit upon upward movement of said means.
2. A safety appliance for elevators having an electric motor drive, including an upwardly movable platform located below andsuspended from the car floor, a contact carried by and movable with said platform,
a non conductor block supported from thecar floor, a second vertically movable rod contact Working therein and normally en- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each,
gaged with the other contact, spring grip means for said rod contact to hold it in depressed position, moving said rod contact upwardly upon release from said grip means.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
