Description
FREDERICK W. MACKENZIE, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
FILLER FOR TEXTILE FABRICS.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. MAC- KENZIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fillers for Textile Fabrics, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in the art of laundrying textile fabrics, and it has for its object to provide an improved filler which is of such a character that when the fabrics are treated therewith during or at the end of the washing operation, such fabrics may pass through an ordinary mangle or ironing machine without liability of sticking to the roll and tearing, and the fabric after passing through the mangle will possess a finish and gloss of a grade superior tothat attainable heretofore in machine ironing, and, in fact, the results are better than ordinarily obtainable in ironing by hand.
The invention is particularly adapted for use in laundrying large pieces of textile fabrics such, for instance, as tablecloths, the ironing of which has heretofore presented difliculties, especially when the ironing was accomplished by a mangle, the fabric when impregnated with the ordinary starch having a tendency to stick to the roll of the mangle andtear. According to the present invention, however, fabrics and particularly large ones when treated with my improved filler are not only capable of passing through the mangle without liability of sticking to the roll or tearing, but a highly superior finish and gloss is obtained.
My invention consists essentially in treating the fabric with a novel and improved filler, preparatory to the passage of the fabric through the mangle, and it will be understood that. the invention is not limited to any particular laundrying process.
s an example of the improved filler, I may give the following :Prepare a solution of approximately three gallons of neutral liquid soap (preferably Ivory) of the strength of fourteen pounds of soap to thirty gallons of water. Prepare a paste or emulsion of one gallon of pure corn starch which may be in the proportion of seven ounces of corn starch to a gallon of water. Mix the gallon of corn starch paste Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1914.
Application filed April 15, 1910. Serial No. 555,677.
or emulsion with the three gallons of neutral liquid soap solution so as to incorporate them thoroughly, and add to the mixture half an ounce of liquid blue, the latter being preferably of the strength of one ounce of the powdered blue to one gallon of water. The blue is not absolutely necessary, but I prefer to use it, especially in the laundrying of white fabrics.
One quart of the solution as prepared above is added to the last water or rinse water of the washing wheel containing the fabric or fabrics to be treated, the washing wheel preferably containing not more than twenty gallons of water at the time the solution is added. The washing wheel may then be operated for a sufficient period, say, five minutes, during which the preparation is thoroughly incorporated with the fabrics, the liquid is withdrawn from the wheel and the surplus liquid is extracted from the fabrics, as usual. The fabrics are then passed through the mangle or ironing machine in the usual way, and practical use has demonstrated that there is no liability of the fabric sticking to the roll of the mangle'and tearing and, moreover, fabrics ironed in this way possess a perfect gloss and finish which could not possibly be obtained in theordinary ironing operation ,by a. mangle or machine, and such gloss and finish is superior to the results ordinarily obtained by hand ironing.
I claim as my invention:
1. An improved filler adapted for use 1n ironing textile fabrics comprising a neutral soap and pure corn starch thoroughly mixed in substantially the proportions of one part starch to three parts of soap.
2. An improved filler adapted for use in the laundrying of textile fabrics compr1sing an intimate mixture of neutral soap, pure corn starch and bluing in substantially the proportions of three parts of soap to one part of starch.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
