This invention relates to typewriting niachines having divided platens, and has espe cial reference to the means for rotating the platen sections.
In typewriting machines of the divided platen type, one section of the platen is usually used for holding a bill sheet and the a ledger leaf. \Vhen the hill is written. certain data are transferred to the ledger leaf and then the platen section carrying the bill sheet is actuated to eject the bill and introduce another bill in its place. 1
In the present invention means are preferably provided. adjacent to the actuating means for the platen section carryii'ig the hill sheet. for quickly actuating the second platen scrt on to quickly introduce, feed, or eject thr ledger sheet. Those two actuating mcaus are arranged compactly and disposed so that they can be readily operated separately or suuultanrously with one hand or linger of tile operator. The stub lever is thus mounted between two ratchet wheels, either one of which or both may be enga ed by the pawls on the stub lever. Either one of these handles may thus be easily picked out and grasped by the operator to actuate the deslred platen section. whereas, if it is desired to actuate both. platen sections simultaneously. both handles may be readily grasped and operatcd together.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view partly in section of a divided platen with my improved actuating means mounted on the platen axle. The platen axle l'has at its ends usual platen turning knobs 2 and the paper feed ratchet 3 connected thereto. The platen comprises two separately rotatable sections 4 and 5. The platen section 4 is fast on a tubular shaft 4" extending the length of the axle between its hearings in the carriage, while the platen section 5 is loose and has fast thereto at its outer end the finger wheel ll. whereby it may be rotated by hand. lliountcd on the axle, at the end opposite to that carrying the paper feed ratchet are means which may quickly rotate the first platen section 4 to introduce or eject a bill or some such paper on which little writing is done in proportion to its size. These means consist of a lever 7 carrying a. pawl 8 engaging a ratchet wheel 9 connected to the platen axle. This lever is mounted on a stub lever 10 which is loose upon the axle and the pawl 8 is normall kept out of en'- gaflcmcnt with the ratchet by a spring 11 lived to the stub lever and hearing against the lever 7 to hold the same against a lug 12 formed on the stub lever.
The loose platen section may be used for holding a ledger leaf or some such paper upon which data. is transferred, and in order that this platen section may also be quickly rotated inde u-ndcntly of the first section or simultaneously therewith, l mount on the opposite side of the stub lever another lever 13 carrying a pawl ii to, engage a ratchet wheel 15 fast on the loose platen section. This lever i l extends farther forward than lever T and has preferably an elongated finer piece 16 which can be readily grasped and distinguished by touch from the handle 17 of lever T. The latter handle extends laterally and can also be readily grasped and distinguished from the handle on the other lev r Vv'hen it is desired to actuate both platens simultaneously, both levers 7 and 13 may be grasped together and both ratchet wheels 9 and 15 may be rotifiat one and the same time to actuate their respective platen sections.
A spring 18 may be provided also for is ver 13 to hold it normally against lug 19 on the stub lever out of engagement with the ratchet wheel 15. The ratchet wheels are provided with shoulders 20 and 21 which abut the stub lever and hold the same clear of the ratchet teeth.
A detcnt 22 may also be supplied for the ratchet wheel 15 to hold the corresponding platen section in proper line spacing position. The other platen section may be tovided with the usual detent (not shown to engage the paper feed ratchet 3, and said ratchet wheel may be engaged by the usual line space pawl 23 which is operated by the ordinary carriage return handle, not shown. The platen and its appurtenances arc journaled in the usual bearings 24:, 25 adjacent. the and heels 2, and the sleeve l carrying the section 4 of the platen extends substantially from one bearing to the other.
A shoulder 26 on said platen section 4 is arranged to form a ]ournal for the platen section 5. Said section 5 preferably is formed with a metal collar 27 having a flange 28, which collar bears against the shoulder and face of said section 4, an obtains a wide bearing thereon.
The opposite end of said section 5 adjacent the line space wheel 15 carries a collar 28, which bears on the sleeve 4. Thus it will be seen that the sleeve t, which is of considerable diameter and has great stillness, will properly support the center Where the two sections of the platen may join, and will carry the load of said platens out to the end of the axle adjacent the bearings 24 and 25. Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used Without others.
Having thus described my invention, claim:
1. The combination with a divided platen comprising an axle, a platen section attached thereto, and a second platen section r0- tatably mounted on said axle, of a ratchet heel connected to said axle, a second ratchet wheel connected to said second platen section, a lever rot .tably mounted between sai ratchet wheels, a pawl mounted on each side of said lever, and handles connected to said paivls and projecting different distances beyond said lever.
22. The combination with a divided platen comprising an axle, a platen section attache thereto, and a second platen section .roiatably mounted on saiduxle, of a ratchet wheel connected to said axle, a secon ratchet wheel connected to said secon platen section, a lever journaled between said ratchet wheels, and a pawl mounte on each side of said lever, one of said pawls having a longitudinally projecting handle and the other of said pawls having a laterally projecting handle.
13. The combination with a divided platen comprising an axle, a platen section attached thereto, and a second platen section rotatabl y mounted on said axle, of a ratchet wheel connected to said axle, a secon ratchet wheel connected to said secon platen section, a stub lever tween said wheels, side of said stub lever and having teeth adapted to engage the respective ratchet wheels, and springs carried by sai stub lea journaled bo levers pivoted on each ver holding said toothed lovers out of engagement with the ratchcts.

5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a. platen axle having bearings adiaccnt the ends thereof, of a sleeve on said axle, a bill section ,fast tosaid sleeve, a journal formed as extension of said section, a ledger section having a bearing on saidjournal at one end and a bearing on said sleeve adjacent the end bearing of the platen axle at the other end, and a hand 'wheel connected to each section for turning the sections separately.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen axle journaled at its ends, of a sleeve supported throughout its length on the axle, a platen section fast on said sleeve, an extension of said section forming a journal, and a second platen section having a bearing on said first section and a bearing on said sleeve.
7. The combination with a platen comprising two sections rotatable relatively to each other, of devices operable as a unit for rotating said sections simultaneously from adjacent points and at the same speed, said devices also operable separately to rotate each platen section independently of the other.
8. The combination with a divided platen comprising two sections rotatable relatively to each other, of a ratchet wheel connected to each section, and devices for independently operating said ratchet wheels, said devices located for simultaneous actuation by one hand or finger of the operator.
9. The combination with a platen comprising two sections rotatable relatively to each other, of mechanism for rotating said sections comprising actuating means for each of said sections arranged to enable an operator to quickly actuate them by one hand either separately or simultaneously.
10. The combination with a platen comprising two sections rotatable relatively to each other, of mechanism for rotating said sections comprising actuating means for each of said sections arranged to enable an operator 'to actuate them either separately or simultaneously as a unit from adjacent points.
11. The combination with a platen axle and a platen section fast to the axle, of a section rotatable on said axle, line-space mechanism arranged to turn one section, and levers adjacent each other arranged to be operable by one hand of the operator either separately to turn said sections separately or together as a unit to turn both of said sections sin'iultaneously.
12. The combination of relatively rotatable platen sections, a ratchet wheel connected to each section. a lever pivoted concentrically with the ratchet wheels, and pawls mounted on said lever and independently movable into ngagement with the ratchet wheels.

17. The combination with a divided platen comprising an axle, a platen section attached thereto, and a second platen section rotatably mounted on said axle, of a ratchet wheel connected to said axle, a second ratchet wheel connected to said second platen section, a lever pivoted co-axially with the platen, and pawls mounted one on each side of said lever on a common fulcrum pin, one of said pawls ha ing a laterally extending handle and the other of said pawls extendingbeyond said first pawl and having a longitudinally extending handle, whereby the pawls may be operated either together to rotate the platen sections together and at ,the same speed. or either platen section may be rotated indcpcm'lcntly o l' the other.
