GHECK-CANCELING ATTACHMENT FOR ADDING-MACHINES.
To all @07mm it may concern Be it known that I, lVILLIAM B. REARIGK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Checlz-Canceling Attachments for Adding-Machinesof which the followingis a specification.
. This invention relates to stamping or printing attachments for adding or other registering machines, and its object is to provide a device which stamps certain data ou checks, bills,ietc., as the amounts thereof are put into the machine and registered.
The invention also has for its object to provide a novel operating mechanism for the stamping member', said mechanism being connected to the actuating handle of the machine, whereby anyimpression is made on each check, bill, etc., as the handle is actuated to register the amount of such check, bill, etc.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel inking device for the stamping member, whereby ink is automatically supplied` to said member, the parts being so constructed and connected that the stamping member is normally in contact with the inking device and the latter swings to enable the stamping member to clear the same when` it swings to make an impression, after which the stamping member returns to its normal position andthe inking device also resumes its normal position.
`The herein stated objects are attained by a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed reference being had to theaccompanying rawings in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device applied to an adding machine; Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3 is a side elevation; Fig. 4 isa cross-section of the stamping member, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a detail and Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of the printing device.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 10 denotes an ordinary adding machine having a crank handle 11 the movement ofwhich actuates the mechanism by which the amount vor number represented by a depressed key will be accumulated by the` registering devices, and a record thereof produced by certain recording devices. ture is immaterial to the present invention, a detailed description thereof is deemed unnecessary. rlhe stamping or printing attachment to be presently described is operatively connected to the actuating handle 11, and with this exception it is entirely independent of the machine.
In a bracket 12 carried by a base board 13, on which the machine is mounted, is journaled a rock-shaft 14 having crank arms 15 and 1G, respectively, at its ends. Between the handle 1l and the crank arm 15 is a pitinan connection 17, whereby the shaft 14 is rocked when the handle is swung.
From the base board 13 rise standards 18 which support rock- shafts 19 and 20, re-
spectively, the former being near the boti tom andthe latter near the top of the standards. One end of the rock-shaft 19 extends some distance from one of the standards, and said end is supported in a bearing 21 mounted on the base board 13. The lastmentioned end of the rock-shaft 19 has a crank arm 22 which is connected by a pitman 23 to the crank arm 16, by which the motion of the rock shaft l-t is communicated to the rockshaft 19. Made fast to the rockshaft 19, by set screws 24- or other suitable means, are two parallel arms 25 which carry a stamping or printing member at their outer ends. The arms 25 swing in a vertical plane toward and from the base board 13 when the shaft 19 is rocked.
The stamping member comprises a base plate 2G carrying a rubber backing plate 27 having a type-carrying portion 28. On the back of the base plate 2G are clips 29 which it slidably over the arms 25 in order that the stampingr member may be removed therefrom. The stamping member is locked in place on the arms 25 by a latch, the latter comprising a cross-bar 30 seating in alined notches 31 in the edges of the arms 25 and carried at` its ends by flat springs 32 secured to the clips 29. The stamping member is also provided with a date stamp, the same comprising type carriers in the form of end-- less bands 33 passing over rollers 311 and a backing bar 35. The parts 2G and 27 have parallel slots 3G through which the bands 83 extend flush with the type portion 28. The shaft 37 of the rollers 34 is supported in a frame composed of spaced side `members 38 connected by a cross bar 39, said frame being secured by fastening its side members to the clips 29. The backing bar 35 vis channeled to straddle the narrow strip of the part 27 which lies between the slots 36.
The inking device for the stamping member is an ordinary pad 40 on the back of which are clips 41 which Slidably engage the outer portions or angular arms 42 made fast to the rock-shaft 2O by set screws 43 or other suitable means. A cross-bar 44 seating in notches 45 in the arms, and carried by flat springs 46 secured to the clips 41, serves to lock the pad on the arms, and upon -disengaging said cross-bar from the notches, the pad may be removed from the arms. The arms are so positioned on the rock-shaft 2O that they7 normally project horizontally therefrom, with their outer ends, to which the pad is secured, pointing downward, thus holding the pad normally in vertical position.
On the rock-shaft 19 is made fast by a set screw 47, or otherwise, an arm V48 having at its outer end aside pin 49 which seats in the longitudinal slot 50 of a lever 51. The pin is tree to travel in the slot between stops 52 at one end thereof. ln the other end or" the slot is slidably mounted a crank 58 which is fast on the rock-shaft 20.
The stamping member and the pad 40 are normally face to face in perpendicular position, the stamping` member being in contact with the pad. The arms 25 and 48 are also perpendicular, the arm 48 being alongside one of the arms 25, and the crank 53 being in vertical alinement with the pin 49. lf now the handle 11 is swung to actuate the machine, the shaft 19 is rocked through the connections hereinbefore described, whereupon the arms 25 swing down and carry the stamping member to the check, bill or other paper to be marked, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 8. The arm 48 also swings down, and through the pin 49 swings the lever 51 in a direction to carry its upper end rearward. rThis movement of the lever, through the crank 53, rocks the shaft 20 in a direction to vtilt the pad 40 upward so that the stamping member may clear the same as it swings down. The pin 49 slides down the slot 50 and' when it reaches the bottom stop 52 it pulls the lever down, the crank 53 sliding in the slot until it reaches the upper end thereof. The stamping member is now in horizontal position to stamp the check, bill or other paper. On the return stroke oi the handle 11, the shaft 19 is rocked to swing the arms 25 and 48 upward, and back to perpendicular position to restore the stamping member and the pad 40 to their normal position. As the arm 48 swings upward and the pin 49 reaches the upper stop 52, the lever 51 slides upward, and after the stamping member passes to the front of the padto perpendicular posi'- tion, the lever also assumes aperpendicular position, and then the crank 53 swings the Vpad back to its normal position facing the stamping member, whereupon the parts are ready for 'another operation.
The base board 18 has anaperture 54 to accommodate the'p'arts 1G and 23, and also carries a pad or other suitable support 55 on which the checks, bills, or other papers 56 to Vbe stamped lare placed.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the invention provid-es 'a stamping l'attachment which is simple'ncenstruction and easily operated, the actuation of the crank handle of the adding machinealso actuating the attachment. y y
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown, but it willbejevident that various changes and modifications in the structural details may 'be made lwithout departure from the spirit and scope f the invention. It is also to lbe understood 'that the invention is not limited `to V.adding -machines, but may be applied to other registering machines having a crank handle 'or other movable actuating element.
I claim.:
1. A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a base, vertically' arranged arms pivoted to the rear 4edge of said base, a stamping member provided with `clips f adapted for engaging over the ends of said arms, spring held means engaging arms for locking said stampingmember in position, and means for operatingl lsaid arms.
2. A vstamping mechanism for registering i" machines, comprising a base, vertically arranged arms pivot'ed to the rear edge `of said base, a stamping member provided with clips adapted for engaging over the -ends of said y arms, means for locking said stamping member in position yeinbodyingv a springheld cross bar and notches in 'said arms, and means for opera-ting 'said arms.'
3. A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a stamping :member supported vonthe ends of pivoted arms, a swinging i'nking pad pivoted independently of the stamping member, means for (iperating said stamping member Vin a direction toward said inking pad, and an additional means operated by the stamping member operating means for swinging inking pad out of the path ofsaid stamping 'inember. A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a stamping member, a swinging inking device pivoted independently of the stamping member, said stamping `member and inking device being nor mally face to face, swinging supports for the stamping member and the inking device, means for actuating the support of the stamping member, and means operated by said actuating means of the stamping member for actuating the support of the inking device to swing said device clear of the stamping member.
6. A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a stamping member, a swinging support for the stamping member, a rock shaft carrying said support, means for operating the rock shaft, an inking device, a swinging support for the inking device, a rock shaft carrying the lastmentioned support, and a connection between the rock shafts for actuating the secondmentioned rock shaft to swing the inkinuf device clear of the stamping member.
A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a stamping member, a swinging support for the stamping member, a rock shaft carrying said support, means for operating the rock shaft, an inking device, a swinging support for the inking device, a rock shaft carrying the lastmentioned support, an arm fastened on the first-mentioned rock shaft, and a connection between said arm and the second-mentioned rock shaft to swing the inking device clear of the stamping member.
S. A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a stamping member, a swinging support 'or the stamping member, a rock shaft carrying said support, means for operating the rock shaft, an inking device, a swinging support for the inking device, a rock shaft carrying the lastmentioned support, an arm fastened on the first-mentioned rock shaft and carrying a side pin, a cranklon the last-mentioned rock shaft, and a lever having a slot in which the side pin and the crank are slidably mounted.
9. A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a stamping member, a swinging support for the stamping member, a rock shaft carrying said support, means for operating the rock shaft, an inking device, a swinging support for the inking device, a rock shaft carrying the lastmentioned support, an arm fastened on the first-mentioned rock shaft and carrying a side pin, a crank on the last mentioned rock shaft, a levcrhaving a slot in which the side pin and the crank are siidably mounted, and stops in the slot between which the side pin works. l
10. A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a stamping member, clips on the base of said member, a support on which the clips are slidably mounted, and a latch for locking `the clips on the support.
11. A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a stamping member, clips on the base of said member, supporting arms on which the clips are slidabiy mounted, said arms having alined notches, and a spring-supported cross bar carried by the clips and seating in the notches.
