The present invention has reference, generally, to improvements in window operating devices; and, the invention relates more particularly "to a novel and simple construction of mechanism adapted to be connected with a, window whereby thesaine mag be easily and qnicklyi'aised or lowered ya simple operation requiring little effort 01' muscular exertion.
The invention has for its principal obpect to provide a self-balancing opening and closing mechanism for connection with any type of window, but more particularly adapted for use with the windows and doors of limousine automobile bodies,coarhes, railway carriages and similar vehicles. To this end the present invention provides a sprocket and chain mechanism for produciug the throw or movement of the window, the same hcin; operated. by means of a handle means through a .reduction gearing transmission whereby the weight cf the window is offset by the power multiplication of said gearing. ln addition to the above arrangement the said-handle means is constructed so as to he selfdoekina for the purpcse of maintaining the window locked in any position. open, closed or inter mediate of said open and closed position.

Said stem and handle-member being therefore capable of a longitudinal movement, as well as a rotating movement, such movement is allowed for when connecting said rectangularly formed end 43 of said stem in said rectangular opening 42 of saidpinion 36, so thatthe requisite amount of longitudinal play of the formerin the latter isprovided for, while yet maintaining their coupled relation so that the rotation of said handle-member and stem will rotate said pinion, 36, and eonse uently said gear-wheel 33 and sprocket-wheel 8 driven thereby.
In the.operation-'of the above described mechanism, assuming that the window is closed, asshown in Fig. 1, and it is desired to open the same, as shown in Fig. 2, said handle-member 45 is first pushed inward to produce a longitudinal movement of said stem 44 which carries inward said disk or flange 51 against the compression of the coil-spring 53, thereby withdrawing said stop-stud 52 from engagement with one of said stop-receiving perforations 50, and consequently freeing said handle-member 45 from its locked condition,- allowing the same to be rotated. The rotation of said handlemember 45 and its stem 44 rotates said pinion 36, which ineshingwith said gear-wheel 33 transmits the rotary movement thereto 8. In thus turning said sprocket-wheel 8 the sprocket-chain 9 is paid off of the same, and the free end of said sprocket-chain moves toward the guide-block 23, the curved surface 24 of which holds said chain in engagement with the teeth of said sprocket-wheel-. 8 until the entrance of said chain-guide or runway 21 is reached. Since the pinion 36 is reduced in proportion to the gear-wheel 33, the power applied by the handle-member is multiplied so that a very little exertion will accomplish the movement ofthe window either up or down, and, furthermore, the positive connection of the chain with thesprocket-wheel 8, and the geared connection of the latter with the no handle-member in effect balances the win-- dow-member so that the same is maintained in the position to which it is moved, but even if such were not the case, the s'elf-locking feature of the handle-member-when the spring 53 forces the stop-stud into a stopreceiving opening, as above described, will rotated in the opposite direction. to turn in the opposite direction the gear-wheel 33 and sprockehwheel 8 whereby the sprocketchain is wound up on said sprocket-wheel, and by the direct pull of such operation the. 15
