JOHN OVERBEKE, E GLEUELND, IQ.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it kIlOWn that ll, JOHN OVERBEKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprayers, of which the followin is a specification.
This invention re ates to improvements in sprayers wherein the spraying material is eJected through a nozzle by the actlon ot a piston movable in a cylinder, in which provision! is made for mixing certain material contained in the cylinder, with fluid from a connecting source, and ejecting the mixture from the nozzle.
The invention relates particularly to improvements in the type of sprayer for which Letters Patent No. 1,030,1l9 were granted to me on June 18th, 1912, and it has for its objects the provision of means for overcoming the back pressure on the piston, resulting from the confining oil the dow of the mixture through the nozzle, when a fine spray is desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for regulating the grade ot the spray.
i attain these objects by the constrnction, combination and arrangement of the parts described in the following speciication, rei?- erence being had to the accompanying drawings forming a port oi seme, in which- Figure i is an Aelevation of the improved device. Fig. 2* is e central vertical section. r'g. 3 is e top view. Fig. i is an inside view oie the bottom cylinder heed, showing the central tube in section. Fig. is Va section on line 5-5, Fig. 2, and Fig. d illnetrntes, on en enlarged scale, e, scattering device used in the nozzle.
Similar characters oi reference :ire used to designate similar" parts in the drawings specii'icetion.,
@eine oil the eiements embodied in the im proved sprayer, and their functions ere similor te those described in my former potent. The cylinder l- `tor example, is edepted to contain a powdered lsubstence which is mined withd the iiuid, the saine es in the former patent. The piston 2 acts es o vehicle for the powder, lout is eetuated in c diiiferent manner, os will presently he eX- piained. The pipe 3 periorms suhstantielly the seine function in the two devices, it heing conductor for the mining huid in hoth Specification of Letters Retent. Application led. August 6,
ceses. The control 'of the How from the pipe 3, however. isan .improvement on the rmer means, and the addition of a second cylinder and piston, adapted to coperate with the-.piston-Q as a means for overcoming buck pressure isalso a decided improvement. The novel construction of the nozzle, whereby the spray isgraded is likewise an improvement over the former spraying de- VIC@- lhe cylinder l, which'is the container for the powder or other material that enters into the mixture, is provided with a heed l". The opposite end of the cylinder l is fitted into a flanged collar 4:8. A cylinder d, of larger diameter than the cylinder l, has one end fitted into the collar member 4r", and is provided at its opposite end with the head 4l?, on which is an internally threaded stem 4c so as to permit the device to he attached to a hose, hydrant, faucet, or other suitable source of fluid supply.'n 'llhe pi e 3 is threaded centrally into and through t e head 4f", so that it will he in open communication with the fluid supply.. rll`he ipe 3 extends axially through both cyliners l and e. A piston 5 adapted to operate in the cylinder 4, is connected with the pist/on 2 by the connecting member 6, which in the construction illustrated, consists o o pipe threaded into the two pistons, the pipe 3 extending longitudinally through the connecting pipe 6. The head it is provided with e, series of ports fla, through which the duid under pressure, Hows inte the cylinder t and actuates the piston 51, which in turn operates the piston 2, through the medium ofthe member o, @penings 4 ere provided in the deluge ci the coller la tor the escopement of ,sir from the cylinder The pieton 2 is provided with e stutng-hoiz 2G, through which thepipe 3 nass-es.
in pipe 3, neer the treo thereoi2 is e series of apertures de.. The heed l@ is provided with externelly threaded stern l?, having e control `here il. A threaded csp 'Z' is odcpted to operette She which enters` here; l, and is ednpted to telescope thepipe 3 at its free The function of the cap with its sleeve '56, is to regulate the mining of materiel from the cylinder i with the from the pipe 3, thisJ is occoniplished hy the screwing or down of :the cop on the stein il, which causes the sleeve lo to cover er uncover the l, sind is provided with sleeve if,
