IFIIIIL I I:
fivb MM A TY THE NORRIS PETERS CD1. FHUTU-LITHQ. WASHINGTON. D C.
. JOHN ORMEROD, OF CASTLE'ION, NEAR MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
MACHINE FOR nnnssnvenrnns, SKINS, AND THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN ORMEROD, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Globe Leather Works, Gastleton, near Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, tanner," have in- .vented new and useful Improvements 1n Machines for Dressing Hides, Skins, and the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machines for dressing hides or skins for the purpose of unhairing, scudding, fieshing, setting and other analogous purposes, of the type in which the skins are carried upon an endless traveling apron and in their passage through the machine are acted upon by a pair of cylinder knives each rotating on its aXis in an opposite direction to the other, one of such knives being placed at each side of a pair ofgrip rollers.
Inmachines at present in use the cylinder knives are carried by swinging counterbalanced arms and are brought to bear upon thehide or skin by means of treadle mechanism at each side of the machine, necessitating two operators; the traveling bed being supported by rollers in fixed bearings.
In my invention I mount the cylinder knives in fixed bearings and the supporting rolls for the traveling bed in adjustable slide bearings operated by levers and wedgesand with the object of obtaining more accurate and easy regulation between the cylinder knives and supporting rolls, than could be got with heavy cylinder knives rotating at high speeds and requiring regulation.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a cross section. Fig. 3 is a plan view.
In a form of apparatus for carryingmy invention into effect and which I now think suitable, I mount each of the cylinder knives a. Z) in fixed hearings in the framework A of the machine. I also arrange a roller 0, d below each cylinder knife a, J), the apron vor bed (1 passing over such rollers, and be tween the rollers and the cylinder knives, the bearings f,.,' for the rollers a (Z resting Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 28, 1313. Serial No. 797,725.
Patented Nov. 17, 1914.
on compression springs f adjusted by set screws f (see Fig. 1). The apron or bed 0 also passes around a roller 9 mounted in bearings g slidable in the frame it the adjustment of the bearings g to maintain the apron taut being effected by screws h.
Means are provided to adjust the rollers 0 d I toward and away from the cylinder knives a, b so that the apron or bed 6 can carry the hide with any required degree of pressure against thecylinder knives a, b.
The bearings 7 of the roller 0 are carried in side frames 2' formed in one with or connected to slides 6* and a treadle mechanism is used to adjust the roller 0 toward and away from the cylinder knife. The treadle j by means of a lever y",
when depressed rocks a shaft 7' which, by
means of a leverj raises or lowersthe slides 6* and with it the framesz'. The bearings f of the rollers d are mounted in end frames 2', and the bearings is of the under grip roller are mounted in end frames 472 These end framesi and m are formed in one with orconnected to slides B resting upon a block C with an inclined under surface, the bars m m serving as guides for the slides B. The block C rests upon the inclined surface of the slide m. The slide 4% can be moved to and fro to adjust the rollers 01 and'k by means of a lever or crank n fixed to a shaft n which shaft is rocked by a hand lever a disposed at the'same side as the treadle mechanism referred to above.
The lower grip roller 7c and the roller d are capable of yielding against the coiled springs 70 and 7? respectively and all the rollers c, d and 70 have adjusting screws f to set the rollers and apron to a nicety and in true alinement toward the cylinder knives I The rollers 0, cl, is, beneath the cylinder 100 knives a, 72 may be covered with rubber, leather, felt or the like and the endless traveling apron 6 may be of soft rubber, leather or felt.
[is the treadle and hand lever are each disposed at the same side of the machine, one operator is sui'licient to work the apparatus.
A. iault found with other machines of this type is the liability of the skins to Warp around the upper grip roll 0, and to adhere to the traveling apron a when they should leave the machine. To obviate this 1 provide the machine with a doctor blade or stripping appliance 0 bearing against the upper grip roll 0 and carried by a pivoted holder o connected to a spring 0 which tends to pull the doctor against the roll 0. A rotary brush 7) is used to insure the removal of the kin from the apron 6. This brush is carried in pivoted bearings ;0 and forced up to the apron by springs 79 lVith my machine it is found that the passage of the skin once through the machine is sufficient.
Any suitable driving means are provided to drive the cylinder knives at high speeds e directions, and the apron at the requis e slow speed. The driving means used by me and considered so far as being suitable are indicated in the drawings.
The cylinder knives a Z) have each a pulley a b so that the knives can be revolved by belts from a countershatt; one belt being open and the other crossed.
The apparatus is provided With a main driving shaft (1 driven by a belt from a counter-shaft, on a pulley g. The requisite slow motion from the driving shaft 9 to the roller 5/ of the feed apron is obtained by the train of gearing i", 1, 1' r 1", 9 r as shown in Fig. 1, this train of gearing having interchangeable parts to enable the speed of the apron to be varied. Thebrush 7) is driven from the roller 9 by a chain 3 and chain wheels 8 The bottom grip roller ll; is driven from 9 also by a chain t and chain. Wheels t, 6 The upper grip roller 0 may be trictionally driven by the apron or positively by a spur pinion on "he axis of the lower grip roller gearing with a spur pinion on the axis of the upper grip roller. The rollers c, d are frictionally driven by the apron e.
The invention may be varied in mere point of detail.
The cylinder knives a b are of the usual or convenient kind and When the machine is used for fleshing instead of knives having plain edges 1 may use knives in which the blades are serrated or saiv toothed.
When the skin is first started in the ma chine the roller 0 is not brought up to the cylinder knife (4, as this is revolving in a direction contrary to the traverse of the skin, but the skin is fed to the grip rolls 0 7c. The grip rolls cl 7c are then raised by he hand lever to start the machine and when the leading end of the skin reaches the revolving cylinder knife 5 it begins immediately to act upon the skin, the cylinder knife (4 doing no Work, all the Work on the skin being done by the knife Z). Assuming that the distance from the center grip rolls 0 to the knife I) is six inches, before the last six or seven inches of the skin pass under the knife roll a, the operator Works the loot t iadle and brings up the grip roll 1: to the knife a. The last six inches of the skin are then acted upon by the knife a and as soon the end oi the skin is released by the center grip rolls 0 k the knife 7) cannot act on the skin, as it is not held by said grip rolls, and the knife 6 simply licks the skin out of the machine. The Whole oil? the skin has thus been acted upon once only, which is essential to attaining perfect results especially When Working on delicate skins.
l. declare that What I claim is:
1. in apparatus for treating hides and skins for the purpose oi unhairing, scudding, ileshing, setting or the like, a pair of revolving cylinder knives, fixed hearings in which such knives can revolve, a pair of grip rollers disposed between the revolving cylinder knives, a grip roll arranged. beneath each cylinder knife, an apron carried upon an adjustable roller and upon the grip rolls beneath the cylinder knives and the lower of the pair of central grip rolls, and independently actuated means for can rying the apron up to and avvay from each revolving cylinder knife substantially as described.
2. In apparatus of the indicated kind a pair oil rotatable cylinder knives mounted in fixed bearings, an apron 0 carried on grip rollers 0 (Z 70 and on a roller g, means to regulate the tension of the apron and for driving same, and independently actuated means consisting of a foot treadle and a hand lever arranged at the same side of the machine for carrying the apron up to and avray from either of the cylinder knives substantially as described.
3. In apparatus of the indicated kind, a pair of cylinder knives mounted in fixed bearings, means to drive the cylinder knives in reverse directions, an upper grip roller 0, an apron e carried on grip rollers 0, (Z, 70 and on a roller g, means to regulate the tension of the apron and for driving same, in dependently actuated means for carrying the apron up to and away from the upper grip roller 0 and up to and away from one of said cylinder knives, independently actuated means for carrying the apron up to and away from the other of said cylinder knives, bearings for the rollers a, a), is having compression springs, set screws to adname to this Specification in the presence of Just such springs, a doctor blade 0' for pretwo subscribing Witnesses. venting the skin or hide from Wrapping around the grip roller 0 and a brush 1? for JOHN OR-MEROD' 5 preventing the skin from adhering to the Witnesses:
