IMPRovl-:MENT 1N WATER cur-'oFFsQ l The Schedule referred'to nlthese Letters Patent and making part of vthe4 `same.
To all whom it 'mayeoncerm l Be it known. that'I, Euros M. BIXBY, ot' Iowa City, in -the countyof Johnson and State of Iowa, have invented a. new and improved falter Cut-- Ott; and I-do hereby'declare that the, following is "a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and opera-tion ofthe same, referencev beingliad to the accompanying drawing making a part ot this specification, in whieh-A f Figure 1A is a vertical section through line y y of Figure 2 isa horizontal section through line ag .t of fic. 1. D
Figure 3 is a side view,
. The ohje'ctof Athis invent-ion isto provide a cheap and convenient instrument by which water or other Huid may readily be c'ut oft' from one pipe and made Vto ow into another.
In the drawingf- A is the iinluetion-pipe,'and
B C are two eduction pipes, all arranged as shown.
The upper ends of the twolower oreduction-pipcs terminate in an oblong'vessel, I), divided into two chal'nbe'rs by a vertical partition'. Y
The chambers may taper downward to the top of the pipes, or they may be ot' uniform dimensions, and the upper end ot' the pipes may be funnel-shaped, as shown in the drawing, the object of leither arrangement 'beingfto ysupply the pipes with water to their full capacity.
Ottone. side ot the vessel l), at its upper edge, is ixedfa-flat horizontal plate or lug, E, the outer end ot' which cornes exactly in line with the dividing par-` titiond lietu-'ceutlic two chambers ot' vessel '1).
- v The induction-pipe A is arranged vertically above one4 ofthe eduction-pipes C, so as to discharge directly into it when nothing intervcnes.
In connection with' the parts above described I ern- )lo a eut-oft' or del'lector lf in the forni of an obl l i long vessel resting upon the upper edge ofthe vessel I), to which its bottom is conformed, and pvoted vto the outer end ol' lug l5 by means o'a `similar lug, (i, I'ojectiug'trom the lower edge of' the delector, and
The deflector l is provided with an opening, m, which uncovers pipe or C when brought over either ofthem, and at the other yside it is provided with a water-tight Hoor, n', which serves to cover one of said pipes when brought over it.
Instead of the oor n or in connectionwith it, if preferred, may be an incline, o, which will 'serve to deflect Vthe water readily from pipe Aiuto pipe B, when the cutfol` isv in the position shown in iig. 1.v
The vessel' F', thus constructed and pivotedbetween the upper pipe and the two lower ones, serves, when properly turned by the operator, to cause the water to cease flowing intoeithcr of the eductionf pipes and commence flowing into the other, and the particular pipeto which the water will at anytime be directed depends on the position .of the opening m.,
1f the vessel F is, as in tig. 1, so turned as to bring the incline c over pipe C and the'aperture ym over pipe B, the water from A will escape through B, while, it' said vessel isturncd on its pivot so as to carryits right-hand side'offover the edge of the vessel I) and bring the aperture m over pipe C, as shown in dotted' lilies, Iig. 2, the water will flow directly from AtoO.
The whole apparatus can be made ot' sheet metal at .very little expense, and so as'to occupy very little space, It is'not liable to get out ol order, and when it does can becasily repaired. It is convenient of operation, nfme ot' the working part-s being concealed,
.but all being,r under the eye ot' thev operator, so that he cannot, by mistake, direct the liquid into the wrong pipe. v l
lhe pipe Aprojecting down into the vessel F forms a' stop which arrests the motion of the latter when turned'in either direction, thereby infalliblyindicating when the delieetor is in the proper position to open the required pipe.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim new, and desire to secure by Letters latent, is
In connection with the pipes A B C, arranged as shown, the oblong vessel D divided into two co|npartments, one above each exit-pipe,`in combination with the deflectiugvcssel F pivoted at p and provided with the opening m and oor n or o, all said parts beingr constructed as and for the purposes set forth.
It. M. BIXBY.
