To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, FELIPE GIROUD, a citizen of the island of Cuba, and resident of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in rapping-Machines, of which the followin is a specification.
his invention relates to machines in which successive movements of plungers cause a succession of articles and wrappers to'be forced through folding devices whereby the wrappers are folded upon the articles- The object of the invention is to provide means whereby a wrapper can be folded upon an article in such a manner that the folds of said wrapper can be held securely by means of a second wrapper which is folded thereon.
A further object is to provide means for applying a paste coated label to the folds of said second wrapper in such a manner that the second wrapper is held securely by means of said label.
The invention consists of means for actuating a plunger which is adapted to move an article and a wrapper through a foldin channel, whereby certain folds of th? JYIRPP6I are eifected, and means whereby a second plunger moving transversely to the first named plunger causes certain other folds of the wrapper to be efiected, further movement of the second plunger causing said article and partially folded wrapper to be moved through a second folding channel, whereby the wrapper is finally folded upon the article.
The invention also consists of means whereby said forward movement of the second plunger causes a second wrapper to be partially folded upon the wrapped article.
The invention further consists of means whereby the second wrapper is finally folded uponthe wrapped article in such a manner that part of the. two ends of the second wrapper are exposed upon the upper side of the wrapped article.
Finally the invention consists of a movable hopper carrying labels; means for applying paste to the underside of the lowermost label, and means for moving said hopper downward, whereby said paste coated label is forced upon and secured to the folded ends of the second wrapper. The folds of the first wrapper being held in place by the second wrapper and the ends of the second wrapper being secured by the paste coated label; all folds of the two wrappers are thereby held securely.

A power driven shaft 1 is journaled at 2 in the main frame 3. A lever 4 is pivoted at 5 and provided with a roller 6 which engages a cam 7 secured to shaft '1. Lever 4 is connected by a link 8 to a slide 9 which rides in guides 10. Forming part of slide 9 is a plunger 11, which is provided with a longitudinal slot 12. Lever 4 is also connected by a link 13 to a lever 14 which is pivoted at 15 to the main frame. The lever 14 is connected by a link 16 to a slide 17 which rides in guides 18. Forming part of slide 17 is a plunger 19 which moves trans: versely to the line of travel of plunger 11. Cam 7 causes back and forth movements of arm 4, which movements are transmitted to arm 14 by means of link 13. By reference to Figs. 1 and 10, it will be seen that the plungers which are connected to the ar 4 a arian part of the present invention. A. wrapper 24: is fed in any suitable manner to a guide 25 which has a support 26 upon which the wrapper rests. To the rear of guide 25 are guides 27 in which are placed a series of articles 28, said articles coming to rest, as shown in Fig. 11, upon a vertically moving plunger arm 29. Plunger arm 29 passes through slot 12 in the plunger 11 and 7 serves tohold said articles above plunger ll. Plunger arm 29 is pivoted at 30, and is provided with a roller 31 in engagement with a cam 32, said cam being secured to shaft 1 and serving to actuate said plunger arm. When plunger 11 has reached the end of its backward movement, downward movement of plunger arm 29 will move the articles downward, so that the: lowermost article will be in range with plunger 11. Then as plunger 11 moves forward, it will force the lowermost article against the wrapper 2%, thereby forcing the wrapper between an upper plate 33 and a lower plate 3d of a channel 35 and causing the wrapper to be folded upon the article; resulting in folds a. As forward movement of plunger 11 is continued, the wrapper taking against central side folders 36 will be folded as shown at 5 in Fig. 3. Continual forward movement of plunger 11 causes upper side flaps c to take against upper folders 37 causing the flaps c to be folded to the osition shown in Fig. 4:. Further forwar movement of plunger 11 causes lower side flaps 02' to take against lower folders 38 and thereby to folded to the position shown in Fig. 5.
At the end of forward movement of plunger ll, said article and wrapper will e moved into range with plunger 19, which is then at the end of its backward movement. The upper end flap e will then be below a downward'eatension of a s ring arm 39; and a side end 7 will e in range with a slide 4C0, which has movement on guide ll placed. transversely to the line of travel of plunger ll. Pirated at 42 to the slide i0 is a pawl 43 which extends into range with a projection it on plunger 19. By means of a spring l5 an inclined face {it of the pawl 43 is held against a in at. baclrward movement of p'unger l9, pawl moved aside by projection 44:, said pin 47 permitting the pawl to be moved into range with said projection 44, at the end of the backward movement of said plunger.
Bearing upon spring arm 39 is one end of a lever 48 which is pivoted at 49 to the frame. The other end of said lever has a pin 50 in rangewith a projection 51 extending from plunger 19. The projection 51 has an incline 52 upon its under side which takes against pin 50 during backward travel of plunger 19, thereby forcing pin 50 below projection 51. The pin 50 \vill'again assume the position in range with projection 51 when plunger 19 has reached the end of its backward movement: The upper side of projection 51 is provided with an inclined surface 53. ,VVhen plunger 11 moves backward, plunger 19 will move forward, and the inclined surface 53 taking against pin 50 on one end of lever -18, will cause downwardmovement of the other end of said lever, resulting in downward movement of spring arm 39, and consequent folding of upper end flap e from the position shown in lig. 5 to the position shown in Fig. 6. As forward movement of plunger 19 is continued, the projection 44 on said plunger takes against pawl 43, resulting in forward movement of the pawl and slide 40. The sfide 40 taking against side end flap f,'causes said flap to be folded from the position shown in Fig. 6 to the position shown in Fig. 7. During said forward'movement of the fold 43 the inclined face 46 thereof, riding on pin 47, will cause the pawl to be moved out of engagement with projection 44; and the pawl and slide will then be returned to their original position by means of the spring 45. 'As plunger 19 continues. its forward movement, it will force the article and wrapper forward, causing the side end flap 9 to take against the upper end folder 54, which will cause said end flap 9 to be foldedfrom the position shown in Fig. 'l' to the position shown in Fig; 8. As the article and wrapper are moved forward in channel 56, .the upper end of flap It will take against an incline 57 formed on the upper plate 58 of the channel 56. This will cause the end of said flap it to'be folded upon the u per side of the wrapped article, as shown y dotted lines in Fig. 9.
A second wrapper 59 is fed in any suitable manner to a guide 60 which has a suppert (it upon the wrapper rests.
The support 61 is so placed that the wrapper is caused to extend across the channel 56 and to have alength of wrapper extending above .the channel equal to approximately twice the length of wrapper extending below the channel. I
The article wrapped in the manner described, and continuing its forward movement, forces the second wrapper 59 forward, causing the upper and lower extensions of said wrapper to take against the upper and lower plates of channel 56, thereby folding the wrapper 59 upon the previously wrapped article, as shown at 1 in Fig. 14. At the end of forward movement of lunger 19, the article wrapped with the first wrapper, and having the second wrapper folded thereon to the position shown in Fig. 14-is moved into an intermittent rotating channel section 62.
A half rotation is then imparted; to the channel section .62, causing the wrapped article and second wrapper to be moved in the direction indicated by arrows in Fig. 14. 5 When this occurs, the end of the second wrapper overhanging the wrapped article, takes against the upper plate 58 of channel 56, causing the second wrapper to be folded to the posit-ion shown at 9' in Fig. '15. As shown in Fig. 15 at is, the end of the second wrapper extends wrapped article, a distance equal to approximately one-half the width of the article.
The channel section 62 is provided with shafts 63 which are journaled'in the main frame. Loosely mounted upon a shaft 63 is a gear-wheel 64 forming part of a disk 65. Disk 65 carries a spring pressed pawl 66 whichengages a ratchet wheel 67 secured to shaft 63. In meshwith gear wheel 64 is a rack bar 68 having guides 69 which ride on shaft 1; said bar having reciprocating movement in guides 70 on the main frame. Journaled' upon bar 68 is a roller71 which is in engagement with a cam 72 secured to shaft 1, whereby reciprocating movement is imparted to'said bar. Upward movement of the rack bar causes rotary motion of said disk, which being transmitted by said pawl and ratchet, causes said half revolution of the channel section 62. Secured to shaft 63 is a block 73 having fiat faces 74 on two opposite sides. A flat spring 7 5 bearing upon one of said faces, serves to hold the channel section in position during reverse rotation of said disk caused by downward movement of the rack bar. Said half revolution of the channel section 62 occurs during return movement of plunger 19, and when another forward movement of plunger 19 has caused a second wrapped article and second wra per to be moved into channel section 62, t e firstnamed articleand wrapper will thereby be forced out of channel section 62 and into a channel 76. It will be seen that flap Zr; ex-. tends half way across the upper side of the wrapped article. When another return and fer-ward movement of plunger 19 has caused a third wrappedarticle and its second wrap- 75 per to be moved into said-channel section 62 the second named article and wrapper will he moved intochannel 76 thereby moving the first named article and wrapper into an extension 7 7 of channel 76. Said extension 30 7 7 of channel 7 6 is provided on its upper side .with a wide opening 78, and on each side are guides 7 9 which overhang the upper side, thereby serving to hold the flap is folded down upon the wrapped article. 5 Situated above said channel extension 77 is a hopper 80 having vertical reciprocating movements in guides 81 and carrying a series of labels 1. The labels r'est only upon small projections 82 extending outwardly 9 fromthe sides of the hopper 80. By means of a weight 83 the labels are forced down to said projections 82. The hopper 80 is connected by links 84 to arms 85 which are secured to a rock shaft 86 mounted in the 5 main frame. Journaled upon one of said arms 85 is a roller 87 which engages a cam .88 secured to shaft 1. Cam 88 causes vertical vacillating movements to be imparted to said arms, which being transmitted by the link 84 cause vertically reciprocating movements of the hopper 80.
In proximity to the hopper 80 is a stationary hopper 89 for holding paste or other adhesive substance 90. Rotating within the hopper 89 is a paste carrying roller 91 which extends horizontally parallel to one side of the label hopper 80. Roller 91 is secured to a shaft 92, which is driven by means of suitable gearing 93 and 94 'from vertical shaft 22. J ournaled upon the paste hopper 89 is a rock shaft 95 to which is secured two arms 96. Upon the free ends of arms 96 is journaled a paste distributing roller 97. A spring 98 connectedto an extension 99 of one of the arms 96 serves to maintain said arms in contact with rollers 100 on the label hopper 80. The arms 96 are provided with a recess 101, and a flat projection 102 upon which the roller 100 rides. During the last half of-a downward movement and the first half of an upward movement of the label hopper 80 the rollers 1-00 riding against the flat projection 102 on arms 96 cause the paste distributing roller 97 to be held against the paste carrying roller 91. During the last half of an upward movement and the first half of a downward movement of thelabel hopper, the rollers, 100 falling into the recess 101 180' second wrapper,
permit the paste distributing roller to ride against the under side of the lowermost label in the label hopper. The label hopper is at the middle of its downward travel when the first named wrapped article and second wrapper is moved from the channel section 76 into the open top channel extension 77. Then at the end of said downward movement of the label hopper, the paste coated lowermost label will be forced down upon the wrapped article, and the paste on the underside article of said label adhering to the upper side of the wrapped article, will cause said label to be withdrawn from its support on the projections 82. lt will be seen that the projections 82 will cause the remaining labels to be retained within the label hopper. lt will be seen that the label 1 adhering to the end portions in, m, of the second wrapper will serve to secure the second wrapper, and that as the second wrapper incloses the side flaps d, and the horizontally extending end of flap it, of the first wrapper, all folds of the two wrappers will be held in place. When another return and forward movement of plunger 19 has caused a fourth wrapped article and its second wrapper to be moved into said channel section 62 the third named wrapped article and second wrapper will be moved into channel section 76 thereby moving the second named wrapped article and second wrapper into said channel extension '1 and cause the first named wrapped article and together with the label pasted thereto, to be moved along said. channel extension.
l claim as my invention:
A machine of the character described comprising a wrapper folding channel, plunger having forward and backward movements in said channel, means whereby a wrapper is partially folded upon ticle, means whereby said article and partially folded wrapper is moved into said channel at he end of backward movement of said plunger; a downwardly movable folder, means whereby a partial forward movement of said plunger causes said folder to be actuated, whereby upper, overhang ing portion of the wrapper is folded upon the article, means whereby further forward movement of said plunger causes a side overhanging portion to be folded upon a lower overhangin portion of the wrapper; means whereby further forward movement of said plunger causes said article and tially folded wrapper to be moved along said channel,whereby remaining overhanging portions of the wrapper are folded upon the article.

A machine of the character described, comprising a wrapper folding channel having a downwardly extending folder, an up wardly extending folder, and a horiaontall comprising a folding channel airman extending folder, a plunger having forward and backward movements in said channel, means whereby. a wrapper is partially folded upon an article, means whereby said article and partially folded wrapper is moved into said channel at the end of a backward movement of said plunger; a wrapper folding mechanism; means whereby a partial forward movement of said plunger causes said wrapper folding mechanism to be actuated whereby certain overhanging portions of said wrapper are folded upon the article, means whereby further forward. movement of said plunger causes said article and partially folded wrapper to be moved along said channel, whereby a portion of the wrapper is turned downward by means of said downwardly extending folder, an overhanging portion is turned upward against the article by means of said upwardly extending folder and the remaining overhanging portion is turned downward upon the article by means of said horizontally extending folder.
8. A machine of the character described, comprising a wrapper folding channel, supports for causing a Wrapper to extend across said channel, a plunger having forward and backward movements in said channel, means whereby an inner wrapper is partially folded upon an article, means whereby said article and partially folded wrapper is moved into said channel at the end of a backward movement of said plunger, a wrapper folding mechanism, means whereby a partial forward movement of said plunger causes said wrapper folding mechanism to be actuated whereby certain overhang portions of said inner wrapper are folded on the article, means whereby further movement of said plunger causes sa' and partially folded wrapper i moved. along said channel, whereby rema overhanging portions of said wrapper are folded upon the article, said forward movement of the plunger also causing said w oped a cle to force the first named w r into said folding channel, thereby can first named wrapper to be foldedupoi wrapped. article.
A machine of the character downwardly extending folder 5 ripwardly extending folder 55, and horizon" tally extending folder 57, supports for causin a wrapper to extend across said channel, a plunger having forward and backward movements in said channel, means whereby an inner wrapper is partially folded upon an article, means whereby said article and partially folded wrapper is moved into said channel at the end. of a backward. movement of said plunger, means whereby partial forward movement of said plun er causes overhanging portions of the inner ltlli wrapper to be folded upon the article, means l said wrapper to be further folded upon the whereby further forward movement of said plunger causes said article and partially folded wrapper to be moved along said channel, whereby a portion of the inner wrapper is turned down by means of the folder 5 1; an overhanging portion is turned upward against the article by means of folder 55 and the remaining overhanging portion is turned downward upon the article by means of the folder 57; said forward movement of the plunger also causing the wrapped article to force the first named wrapper into said channel, thereby causing the first named wrapper to be folded upon the wrapped article.

A machine of the character described, comprising a wrapper folding channel having upper and lower plates and a horizontal folder 5?, supports for causing a Wrapper to extend across said channel, a plunger having forward and backward movements in said channel, means whereby forward movement of said plunger causes an article 5' and a partially folded inner wrapper to be moved through said folding channel whereby anupwardly extending portion of said partially folded wrapper is forced against said horizontal folder 5? thereby causing said portion of wrapper to be folded upon the upper side of the wrapped article, said forward movement of the plunger also causing the wrapped article to force the first named wrapper between said upper and lower plates, thereby causing the first named wrapper to be folded upon said folded portion of the inner wrapper on said article. 6. A machine of the character described,
comprising an intermittently rotating chan- 1, ml section, a wrapper folding channel in range therewith, said folding channel having upper and lower plates and a horizontal folder 57, supports for causing a wrapper to extend across said channel, a plunger having forward and backward movements in said folding channel, means whereby forward movement of said plunger causes an 5 article and a partially folded inner wrapper to be moved through said folding channel whereby an upwardly extending portion of said partially folded wrapper is forced against said horizontal folder 57 thereby causing said portion of wrapper to be folded upon the upper side of the wrapped article,
said forward movement of the plunger also causing the wrapped article and the first wrapper to be folded upon said folded portion of the inner wrapper on said article, means for causing a half revolution of said channel section. whereby an overhanging portion of the first named wrapper is forced l l r l i l l r l wrapped article and caused to extend upward a distance equal to approximately half the width of the article, a second wrapper folding channel in range with said intermittently rotating channel section; and means whereby another forward movement of said plunger causes a second wrapped article and a wrapper to be forced through the first named folding channel and into said channel section, whereby said second wrapped article and wrapper causes the first wrapped article and partially folded wrapper to be forced out of said channel section and into said second'folding channel, whereby said upwardly extending portion of the first named wrapper is forced against a wall of the second folding channel, thereby causing the first named wrapper to be finally folded upon the first named wrapped article.
7. A machine of the character described, comprising a Wrapper folding channel, an intermittently rotatin g channel section in range with said folding channel, supports for causing a wrapper to extend across said folding channel, a plunger having forward and backward movements in said folding channel, means whereby an inner wrapper is partially folded upon an article, means whereby said article and partially folded wrapper is moved into said channel at the end of a backward movement of said plunger, means whereby a partial forward movement of said plunger causes certain overhanging portions of the inner wrapper to be folded upon the article, means whereby further forward movement of said plunger causes said article and partially folded wrapper to be moved along said folding channel, whereby remaining overhanging portions of the inner wrapper are folded upon the article. said forward mrweme'nt of the plunger also causing the wrapped article to force the first named nel section. the channel of said section exnamed wrapper to be forced between said j upper and lower plates and into said channel section, thereby causing the first named i tending transversely in line with the axis of rotation thereof; a wrapper folding channel in alinement with said intermittently rotating channel section; supports for causing a wrapper to extend across said folding chanqnel; a plunger having forward and backward movements in said folding channel; means whereby an inner wrapper is parby said article and partially folded inner wrapper moved into said folding channel at the end of a backward movement of said plunger; means whereby a partial forward movement of said plunger causes said article and partially folded inner wrapper to be moved along said folding channel, whereby overhanging portions of said inner wrapper are folded upon the article, said forward movement of the pli'lnger also causing said wrapped article to force the first named wrapper through said folding channel, and into said channel section, thereby causing the first named wrapper to be folded upon the wrapped article; means for causing a half revolution of said channel section, whereby a portion of an overhanging portion of the first named wrapper is forced against a wall of said folding channel, thereby causing said wrapper to be further folded upon the article; and -means whereby another forward movement of said plunger causes a second wrapped article and a wrapper to be forced through said folding channel and into said channel section, whereby said second wrapped article and wrapper are 'forced against the first wrapped article and wrapper, thereby causing the first wrapped article and wrapper to be moved out of said channel section, substantially'as described.
9. A machine of the character'- described, comprising an intermittently rotating channel section, a wrapper folding channel in range therewith, a plunger having forward and backward movements in said folding channel, means whereby forward movement. of said plunger causes a. wrapped article and a wrapper to be moved through said folding channel and into said channel section, thereby causing said wrapper to be partially folded upon the wrapped article, means for causing a half revolution of said channel section, whereby an overhanging portion of said Wrapper is forced against a wall of said folding channel thereby causing said wrapper to be further folded upon the wrapped article and caused to extend upward a distance equal to half the width of the article, a second wrapper folding channel in range with said intermittently rotating channel section; means whereby another forward movement of said plunger causes a second wrapped article and a wrapper to be forced through the first named folding channel and into said channel section, whereby said second wrapped article and wrapper causes the first wrapped article and partially folded Wrapper to be forced out of said channel section and into said second folding channel, whereby said upwardly extendin portion of the first named wrapper is forced against a wall of the second folding channel, thereby causing the first named wrapper to be finally folded upon the first named wrapped article.
10. A machine of the character described, comprising a wrapper folding channel, a plunger having forward and backward movements in said channel, a second wrapper folding channel, a second plunger having forward and backward movements in said second channel, the movements of the second plunger being at right angles to those of the first plunger, a slot extending rearwardly from the forward end of the first plunger a vertically moving plunger arm in range with said slot and serving to support an article above the first plunger during its backward movement, means whereby said plunger arm is moved clownward when said plunger reaches the end of a backward movement whereby said article is moved into range with said plunger, supports fo causing a wrapper to extend across said folding channel in front of said article whereby forward movement of the first plunger causes said article and wrapper to be forced through the first folding channel and into said second folding channel, thereby causing the wrapper to be partially folded upon the article, said plunger being so arranged that when the first plunger causes said article and partially folded wrapper to be moved into said second folding channel, the second plunger will have reached the end of a backward movement, a downwardly movable folder, means whereby a partial forward movement of the second plunger causes said folder to he actuated whereby an upper overhanging portion of the wrapper is folded upon the article, means whereby further forward movement of the second plunger causes a side overhanging portion to be folded upon a lower overhanging portion of the wrapper, and
of the second plunger causes said article and wrapper to be moved along said second channel, whereby remaining overhanging article.

A machine of the character described, comprising a wrapper folding channel having upper and lower plates and a horizontal folder 57; supports for causing a wrapper having forward and backward movements [I1 said channel;.means whereby forward movement of said plunger causes an article moved through said channel, whereby an upwardly extending portion of said partially folded wrapper is forced against said horizontal folder 57, thereby causing said portion of the wrapper to be folded upon the upper side of the wrapped article; said forward movement of the plunger also causing the Wrapped article to force the first named wrapper between said upper and means whereby further forward movement portions of the wrapper are folded upon the 3 to extend across said channel; a plunger and a partially folded inner wrapper to be 3 [lower lates, thereb causin the first;
