' I To all whom it may concern .for Looms, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact disclosure.
The object of my invention is to provide a; let-01f mechanism and tension device for looms which is mechanically controlled not by the tension of the warp but by the position of the whip-roll and which at the same time is very sensitive and efficient in securinga uniform let'ofi of the warp-threads. thereby enabling the fabric tobe woven with a uniform mesh and of a uniform width.
Briefly my invention comprises the employment of weighted levers ivhich act upon a movable bar termed a whip-roll, over which the warp-threads pass from a warpbeam' or spool. The rotation of the warp beam is controlled through the medium of a friction clutch interposed in the mechanism for rotating the warp-beam, said clutch being controlled by said levers.
For adetailed description of one form of my invention, which I at present deem preferable, reference may be had to'the following specification and the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the warpend of a loom showing my improved let-ofl" device applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is anend elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the warp-beam or spool on which the warp-threads are wound. Said threads 2 pass thence over the movable whip-roll 3, as indicated in Fig. 1, and thence under the binder. bar as indicated at 4 by dotted lines From this point the warp-threads then run to the heddles in the usual manner. The whip-roll 3 is fixed on suitable brackets 5 which are fixed on the transverse shaft carried in the grooved bearings 7, Upon one end of the shaft 6 is fixed a lever Scan rying at its off-set upper end two adjustable weights 9 and 10. The opposite end of the shaft 6 carries a downward off-set lever 11 which also carries an adjustable'weight 12 atiits outer end. Gne of these gears is adapted to mesh with the small spur-gear 14 fixed to the end of a shaft 15 which rotatably mounted the bearing 16 fixed to the lower portion of the frame of the loom. The outer end of the shaft 15 carries a worm-gear 17.

This engages a screw-gear 18? fixed to the 1 end of a shaft 18, inclined somewhatto a horizontal line, and which is 'journaled in the bearing 19, attached to-the lower portion of the frame of the loom. The upper end of the shaft -18may have a hand-wheel 20 attached-thereto for rotating the warp-beam independently of its driving mechanism when necessary. Keyed to the shaft 18, and slid'abie longitudinally thereon, is one member 21 of a riction clutch having a grooved collar QQ-engaging a-yoke 23 carried on the lever 24. This lever is" pivoted at its lower end to astud 25 projecting from the frame of the loom. The upper end of the lever 24' is slotted, as indicated at 26, and engages a pin 27 projecting from the weighted lever 11'. Mounted loosely on the shaft 18 is a second member 28 of the friction clutch which has fixed to it a bevel gear 29. This 1 bevel gear meshes with a bevel gear 30 carried on the transverse driving shaft 31,
which latter may be constantly driven in any suitable or well-known way.
It will now be seen that when the picks advance the warp 2 the whip-roll 3 is deshaft having the hand-wheel 20, which Will cause the, screw-gnarl? and the spur-gear 14 to turn in an anti-clockwise direction, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1. Consequently, the warp-beam will be turned in a. clockwise direction, as indicatedby the arrow, and the warp let oil or advanced. Since this allows the whip roll to'rise and the-weights to be lowered, the clutch membore 21- and 22 will be disengaged, and the :rotation of the warp-beam will cease until ,thepicks of theloom have a exegesis-mu. In other Words,the effective center of grav of the combined weights is one horizdntal plane with the axis of theshaft 6. Owing to the'nature of the friction'clutch, the device is particularly free from the effect of the relative humidity and dryness of the atmosphere and the tension maintained the samein spite of variations in weather conditions. The tension of the warp being produced primarily by the Weighted levers, or in other words, by force of gravity, is no variation o-f'this force and a complete ,warp may be run through the loom and woven into fabric without. any adjustment whatever of the weights, and in fact, as a matter of practice, it has been found-that a number of warps may be run through|the loom without any adjustment of the weights or thelet-off device whatever. In view of these advantages, my improved,let-ofi' device is particularly adapted for weaving canvas or duck to be used inthe manufacture of pneumatic automobile tires in which the tension and crimp between the warp and the woof threads should be absolutely the same,
in view of the fact that this fabric when so employed is usually cut onthe bias.
