POCKET KNIFE. AND HEPLEMENT.
Specification. of. Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. to, rare.
Application filed August 15, 1914. Serial No. 856,905.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAUL Gnanorr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Knives and Implements, of which 'the following is a specification.
My improvements although applicable to cutlery generally relate more particularly to the class of pocket knives and similar implements, designed to be carried upon the person, the handles or casings of which are formed with external side plates of precious metal attached to the inner side or frame plates between which latter the knife or other blades arepivotally or otherwise mounted in the usual manner. These external side plates of precious metal are usually made of gold, although I do not limit myself thereto. \Vhen secured in position by riveting the rivets show externally and are objectionable in that respect, so it has be come customary to secure said external side plates in position by means of solder. This also is objectionable for several reasons. In the first place skilled labor is required to properly solder the plates in position, and the operation is long, tedious and expensive. In the next place the soldering, no matter how carefully done, resultsin the corrosion, more orless, of the steel parts of the implement, necessitating repolishing thereof, which is also an expensive operation, materially increasing the cost of the production. Furthermore a knife or other implement the handle of which is thus provided with soldered external side plates, can never be taken apart for repair, the replacement of a blade or like purpose, without destroying its value and utility.
I obviate all these difficulties by my invention, which consista essentially in positively securing the external side plates of precious metal to the inner side or frame plates of the implement by tongues integral with said external side plates inturned and fitting in recesses formed for their reception in the inner side or frame plates as hereinafter more fully set forth, whereby the cost of production is materially lessened, and the attachment of the external plates made stronger and more ositive, while admittingof their removal for purposes of substitution or repair of other parts without impairing the lness or appearance of the implement when the external side plates are replaced in position. In fact the said external side plates may be removed or attached with equal facility, and without impairing the integrity, utility or'appearance of the implement. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a side elevation of a pocket knife having external side plates made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a rear elevation thereof; Fig. 3, a side elevation showing the inner side or frame plate before the application of the external side plate, or after the removal of the latter; Fig. 4:, is an elevation of the inner side of one of the inner side or frame plates; Fig. 5, an elevation of-one of my external side plates before application to the frame plate; Figs. 6, and 7, are respectively elevations of an inner side or frame plate and an exterior plate like unto Figs. 4, and 5, tion; Fig. 8, is an clevis loop; Fig. 9, is a transverse section upon an enlarged scale through the frame plates and the external side plates, the blades being omitted; Fig. 10, is a transverse sectional view on the same enlarged scale showing an inner side or frame plate and an external plate before attachment, the tongues on the latter being partially bent over for engagement with the frame plate; Fig. 11, a similar section-showing the parts united by the complete inturn of the binder tongues. Fig. 12, is a sectional view on the larger scale illustrating the attachment of the clevis loop.
I have herein chosen to show my invention by way of illustration as applied to an ordinary pocket knife of well known style and construction adapted to carry two or more blades or members'pivotally mounted upon and between the usual frame plates f, f, f, in the usual manner, although the essential features of my invention are, as before intimated,- applicable to the handles of various kinds of cutlery and similar articles where external plates to be used to clover and. embellish the frame plates. The frame plates f, f, f, are secured together as heretofore by rivets r, 1', which also secure the springs s, s, and the blades b, b, in position. One of these rivets (r) is in the form of a tube the outer ends of which form the sockets for the reception of the trunnions c, c, of the clevis loop C, which is made of elastic resilient material (preferbut illustrating a"m'odificaofprecious metal are elevation of my spring ahly metallic) so that the said trunnions c, 0, may he s rung into or out of the open ends of the ho low rivet r, as will he readily understood to reference to Fig. 12. The outer frame p ates f, f, are formed with edge notches e, e, coinciding with recesses or de pressions e, 0, formed on the inner sides of said outer frame plates i", f, as shown particularly in lfiigs. a, '6 and 10. The outer or finishing plates p, of precious metal are formed with tongues p, which, when said external side plates 3), are superposed over and against the outer frame plates 1", f, coincide with the edge notches e, e, in the latter, so that said tongues 79, may he bent over through said edge notches e, e, and into the recesses e, 6', formed fortheir reception on the inner side of the frame plate f, as hereinbefore stated. The finishing plates 0, of precious metal are thus securely attached to the frame plates f, efiectually coverin up and concealing the rivets r, said finishing plates losing unperforated except where the clevis loop C, is used when they are formed with the perforations p for the accommodation of the trunnions c 0, of said clevis loolp C. I
he edge notches e, and the recesses e", may he formed shy dies at a single operation in a manner well lrnown in the art; and in like manner the finishing plates p, may he struck up from precious sheet metal with the tongues 39', and with the perforations 39 also, where the latter are required. This die work renders the primary cost of manufacture comparatively sli ht; and the construction is so simple that the finishing plates may he applied without the employment of specially skilled lahor, such as is indispensable when the outer or finishing plates are soldered to the frame plates. Furthermore as before stated; the corrosion of other parts, inevitable where soldering is resorted to, is efiectually avoided; while a arness which cannot be done where soldering is resorted to as heretofore. The countersinking of the tongues p, of the finishing plates within the recesses e on the inner sides of 9 the frame plates 1, prevents their interference or contact with the blades or other implements mounted between the frame plates while efiectually clenching the frame and finishing plates together.
lit is obvious that any number of tongues p, edge notches e and recesses c, may be provided, as may he found most expedient. 'lhus in Figs. 3, t and 5, four are provided for,-two at theends of the knife handle and two medially, while Figs. 6 and '8' illustrate the provision of sin fastenings of this character.
What I claim as an invention and desire to secure hy Letters I atent is,
l. -in an implement of the characmr designated, a side frame plate formed with edge notches and an external finishing plate formed with tongues bendable over through such notches and countersunk within the said plate.
2. ln an implement of the character designated, a side frame plate formed with edge notches and with recesses at an angle thereto and communicating therewith, and an external finishing plate formed with tongues extended through said notches and engageahle in said recemes, said tongues heing countersunk .within said recesses on the inner side of the frame plate.
