To all whom it may concern: I y
Be it known that WQ,F- RANK 'BURGNER and JAsPERBnnoH, citizens of the United States, residing at Silver City, in the county of Juab and Stateof Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clevis Connections, of which the following is a specification. I g
This invention relates to clev s connections, and it has for its ob ect to produce a self locking clevis of simple and improved construction.
A further object of the "invention is to produce a clevis connection embodying a hingedly supported bar and a post engaged thereby, said post being notched for engagement with a latch member carried by the hinged bar, the construction being such that the latch member will be relieved from strain.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clevis construction which shall be simple, thoroughly eflicient in operation and capable of being easily repaired in case of injury.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no'limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterationsfand 1nodifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the hinged bar raised for the introduction of a link or connecting member into the clevis. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the clevis member pivot member .10 is a swinging. arm or bar 11 havingin the underside thereof near its free end a socket 12 which communicates w1th. a longitudinal bore 13 wherein is Specification of Letters iatent. placed a spring ,actuated latch member 14 v having a button 1 5 that projects through a I slot .16 and whereby the latchmembenmay be retracted against the tensioir'of the spring. I i
, The base member 7 provided with a female threaded aperture or socket l'l whe're- I is mounted apost 18, the upper end of which is adapted to enter the recess 12 in the arm 11, said post being provided witha notch 19for the reception of the projecting portion of the latch member 14. which is beveled, as "shown, so as'to readily engage the post when the hinged arm 11 is swung in the direction thereof.
It will be readily seen from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing hereto annexed, that by retracting the latch member 14,-it is disengaged from the notch 19, thus permitting the arm 11 to be swung clear of the post, as seen in Fig.1, enabling a connecting member, such as a link 20, to be introduced; By swinging the 1 arm 11 in the direction of the post, thelatter will engage the recess 12, and the notch 19 will be engaged by the latch member 14, thereby locking the arm 11 securely in position and confining the link or member with which the clevis is to be connected. If tensile strain is exerted'on the connecting mempost 18 and will be sustained equally by the base member 7 and by the hinged arm 11, the latch member being subjected to no strain whatever. The post 18 may be'readily replaced in case of breakage or injury I The improved clevis or connecting device may be conveniently used on any kind of machinery where there are clevis connecber 20, such strain will be taken up by the tions to be made. It is particularly useful in making brake and gear shifting connec-' tions. While the pin orpost 18 has threaded engagement with the base plate 7, the outer end of said post is of non-circular cross section, preferably square, the recess 12 being correspondingly shaped, thus preventing the post from rotating and working loose. By the improved device, a connection may be made or broken in a moments time, and the device 1s, therefore, decidedly time-saving as compared with ordinary havinga forwardly extendingbase and a.
clevis'es which require pins, bolts or screws to be adjusted. It will alsobe noticed. that.
the improved device'has no loose parts that are liable to become misplaced and-lost.-
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed asonew, is:-v
1. A clevis including a. body portion, a base member extending forwardly there from, an arm hingedly connected with the body portion and having a non-circular recess, a post having. threaded connection Withthe base, said post havinga portion. ofnoncircular cross section for engagement-with the recess, and locking means for-connecting the posbwith the hinged arm;
2. A clevis comprising a body portion rearWardly extending neck provided With a female threaded socket, a post, risinglfrom the base and having threaded connection therewith, .saidlpost. having. .an end portion of" non-circular cross section, an arm hingedly connected with the body portion and having a recess to engage the non-circulamportion of thepost, a spring-actuated latch member housed in the arm and 'adapt-' ed to engage the post, the latter being notched for such engagement, and means for retracting the latch member against the tension ofthe spring;
