ELASTIC-FLUID TURBINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 10, .1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN S. GREEN,
provide a simple andreliable construction and one of minimum cost.
s-Inlthe drawings accompanying this application and forming a part thereof: Fig- 1 1s a view inper'sgective of a plurality of blades provide shrouds constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a view in perspective with covers or of a single blade machined for use in this construction; Fi 3 is a view showing the face of a blade, t e shroud or cover in cross section, and a spacing piece, such as utilized between adjacent blades, in section; and, Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of a portion or, one-half of the cover or shroud used in this invention.
ltgwill be understood that the invention is: -"equally applicable to the stationary blades, generallybtermed vanes, of a turbine, although in the drawings I have illustrated it asapplying to the rotary blades or buckets only, without any idea of limiting the invention to use with either.
In carrying out my invention I employ a shroud or cover for the outer ends of the blades, which comprises two separate members welded together after they are located in place'on a row of assembled blades. By welded I mean united'by the application of heat and pressure, or heat alone, as, for example, by means of autogenous soldering. I also provide shroud-engaging'portions on the outer ends of the blades, which are adapted to be engaged by notches cut or otherwise formed in the engaging edges of the two shroud forming members. These shroud-engaging portions may be formed at or near the ends of the blades and may be of any suitable shape or of any size commensurate with the forces encountered by t em.
. '.In the illustrated embodiment of the invention a blade 5 of any desired cross section and formed in any desired manner,
either drawn or cast or drop forged, is milled near one end as shown at 6 so as to leave a rectangular connecting portion 7 joining the top and bottom portions of the blade. The blades may be secured in an suitable manner to the turbine element an if desired, may be assembled into groups prior to assemblage in .the turbine as shown in 'Fig. 1. In this view separate spacing members 8 liebetween adjacent blades 5 and a wire or rod 9 passes through the spacing members and blades, the spacing members being provided with holesv 10 to receive: the rod or wire while the blades are provided with holes 11 for the same purpose. p
.A shroud or cover formed of two members 12 and 13 secures the outer or free ends of the blades together and, as shown, each of the members 12 and 13 is reduced inthickness along one of its ed es as at 14 and notched as at 15. When t e two members 12 and '13 are assembled'toyform a shroud orcover for a row of blades, the notches 15 of each member engage the shroud-holding portions formed on the blades or receive the connecting portions ;7-
of the blades, and the reduced portions of I the members overlap, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3. The two members are positively locked tothe blades on which they are mounted, by welding or spot-welding their engaging or overlapping portions together. This forms a rigid connection between the two; members, and holds them firmly in position with relation to the shroud-holding portions formed on the blades, and consequently positively locks the shroud in place on the blades.
While I now believe it is preferable to notch one edge of each of the members 12 and 13 prior to locating them on the blades,
and also to'over-lap the notched edges of these members, one member only may be notched to receive the shroud-holding portions of the blades, and the two members may be welded together along their engaging edges, without being over-lapped.
It will, of course, be understood that the shroud or cover portion may be located in any position on the blades so that it. will form a straight or a divergent passage for the fluid between the blades. It will also be understood that the means employed for securing the outer ends of the blades together and-for holding them in their relatively proper positions, may be employed in connection with any blade-mounting means.
In accordance with the requirements of the patent statutes, I, have, illustrated and described what I now consider to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, but
it' will .be understood that various changes, substitutions, modifications, omissions and additions may be made in the details of concover or shroud for the blades or buckets formed in two parts, each being rovided with notches for engaging shrou -holding portions formed on the blades, I said two parts of said shroud being rigidly secured together by the application of heat thereto. 4. In a turbine, blades, a two-part'cover being similarly provided along their engaging edges with cooperating blade-receiv-' mg notches, and being secured together by spot Welding. 6. In a turbine, blades, a cover or shroud for the blades formed in two parts'and having overlapping notched edges welded to-' gether and engaging shroud-holding notches formed in the blades;
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this-26th day of March, 1914.
