his invention relates to improvements in traction engines; more particularlyto engines of the class in which the cylinders, pistons, and the shafting and gearing areall placed below the boiler. A great partof the weight incident to the heavy wrought beam frame of undermounted engines as heretofore constructed is dispensed with without sacrificing any of the necessary strength or rigidity of the structure. What I claim is:
1. In a traction engine, of the boiler, the rear driving wheels and axle therefor, the main frame below the boiler and supported by the said axle, the crank shaft mounted on the front end of said main frame, the gearing and shafting interposed between the crank shaft and the drive wheels, the engine frames extending forward from the crank shaft and mounted at their rear ends on the said main frame, the downward extending bracket secured to the bottom of the boiler and vertically supporting the front endsof the engine frames independently of the main frame, the front ground wheels and means for supporting the front end of the engine on the said front ground wheels independently of the aforesaid main frame, substantially as set forth.
2. In atraction engine, the combination of the boiler, the drive wheels, the main frame below the boiler connected to the drive wheels, the crank shaft mounted on the forward end of said main frame, the shafting and gearing interposed between the crank shaft and the ground wheels and supported on the said main frame, the engine frames below the boiler, the bracket indeframe for vertically sustaining thecylinder ends of the engine frames, the bracket independent of the said frame for vertically sustaining the shaft ends of the engine frames, the front supporting wheels for the engine, and steering devices for the said wheels supported on one of the aforesaid brackets, substantially as set forth...
