" FOLLOWER-MECHANISM FOR FLING-CABINETS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, 4IEvnnnrr"STCK, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga 'and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Follower Mechanism forv Filing-Cabinets, of'which the followingis a specificatien.
This invention hasvfor its objectfthe p'ro duction rof afollower mechanism for filing cabinets and the like which is simple Ain construction, economical for manufacture and .highly efficient'and .durable in use and it consistsvi'n the combinations andconsftru'ctions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
. the same beingA shown in rear'elevation.
lformed up Fig.' 2 is 4a longitudinal vertical sectional' View taken centrally of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a,
detail view of parts vseen in Figs. 1 and 2.
lThis follower lmechanism forling cabinets' .comprises a guide, a slide movable in the guide and coacting at its side margins with the guide, and a clamping member car! ried by the follower and coacting `with the guide. l
1 is .the drawl which is here shown as out of sheet metal; guide which,- as here shown, is in 2 is the :the form o f a channel .extending lengthwise of the bottom 0f the member 1 and as having its side margins 3 overhangiug the botlwith perfrations in its bottom vwhich receive ears'6 struck from bottom of thedepression 4 and inserted through said perforations and bent over onto the bottom of the guide 2 to hold the guide in'position.
7 is the slide movablealong the guide and c secured to the follower plate 8; and'9 is the clamping member pivoted tio a bracket to be v described on the follower plate 8 and coacting with the guide 2 and with the slide 7 to hold the follower and associated parts inV Specification of Letters Patent.
In describing this invention reference isv 10 being bent into angular form. to conform to. the angle formed by. the overhangig these angular ymargins arey preferably arranged with their edges running onv the bottom of the channel 'of the guide 2. However, if desired, the angular formation of the margins of the slide 2 may be modified or vdispensed with. |The slide 7 is. 4usuallyformed with a central lengthwisedepression 12 for lreceiving the card guide rod 13 and the angular formation of the margins of the guide 2 provide ample roornfor-this vdepression without forming alslot orv depression in the bottom of the channel 2. The depression 12 rterminates y short of the bottom :of the secured to-the lengthwise intermediate portion of theA slide 7- between the overhanging lmargins. of the guide. To facilitate the seg curement of the bracket to the' slide, the slide is raised between the overhanging margins 3 of ,the4 guide 2.and above said `margins as A illustrated at 14, and the depression de;v
pends centrally *from the raised portion'.
`The bracket is here shown as- U shaped vhaving its intermediate portionsecured to the raised portion 14.g of the slide 7 and its .branches extendingupwardly; and `this U- shaped bracket .is preferably provided .by forming horizontallyand rearwardly eX- I tending flanges 15, 16 onthe follower plate, the flangel-being at thelower edge ofthe follower plated. said flange Aoverlying the tom of the channel.. This guide, j as here shown, is located in a depression 4-formed in the bottom 5 of the draw, a-ndfis provided extendingianges 16 meeting the flange 115.l

.lmargins 3 and the sides 11 of the guide-2,and
4channel 2in order to clear the ears 6. The
slide 7 is connected to the Afollower plate by means associated therewith as -a-bracket The flanges 15,16 are' struck from the sheet vsuitable fastening means to the vertical* flanges 16, The flange 15 is secured to the metal follower plate, andffthe ia'nge 15 is. l
intermediate portion 14 of the slide 7 by means of rivets lSfor any other suitable f astening means, these rivets also passing through-a bearing -plate 19 resting on the i' upper face of the flange 15.
The operating member 9- is pivoted to the i vertical anges 16',`and is `here shown `as provided withA side flanges I20 arranged contiguous to .the' vertical flanges 16, the pivot 2 1for they clamping member'Q .ex-
overhanging l margins 3 and `said member .is located in the rear of the follower and coacts withI the guide at a point slightly in the rear of the slide 7, and the slide 7 preferably extends in front of the follower' plate 'from a point substantiallyush with the' rear edge of the-horizontal edge 15.' This arrangement permits the slidef7 to bind against the gulde 2 when force is applied to 'the front face of the follower plate, and the which clamping member 9 hasnot been operated; but not to bind when pressure is applied to the follower plate to force the same forwardly. l
The follower mechanism is particularly simple and economical in construction ,owing "to the arrangement ofthe parts 'by which the slide, follower and clamping member are assembled, and tothe arrangement by` prov1s1on for the card guide rodis made.
