To all whom it 111 (1 2 concern Be it known that I, JACOB Lane, citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Hinges for Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprises a hinge for doors involving co-working parts adapted to be concealed within the door casing, and wherewith a longitudinal movement as well as a turning movement is imparted to the door in respect to said casing when the door is opened and closed, substantially as herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide a hinge for doors, particularly automobile and other vehicle doors, whereby the hinge parts will be concealed and a close joint obtained when the door is closed; "whereby the door will be forced away in a longitudinal direction from the meeting edges of the door and the casing while it is being opened; and whereby a reverse movement is ob tained while the door is being closed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view in plan of a part of a casing and door and my improved hinge in closed position, and Fig. 2 is a similar view embodying a slight modification of the same parts in a partly open position. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33, Fig. 1.
The hinge comprises three main parts,- a box member 2 adapted to be seated within and affixed to the edge of a body or casing 3 by nails or screws 4, a hinge member 5 comprising a plate adapted to be aiiixed to the edge of the door 6 and having an integral arm '7 adapted to project intosaid box memher 2, and'a fulcrum link 8 pivotally uniting said arm 7 and box member 2.
Box member 2 has a curved cam shaped wall 9 and a straight wall 11 with a tapering recess 12 at the base of wall 9. Arm 7 of binge member 5 is curved and its outer face 13 corresponds substantially to the irregular inner outlines of wall 9 and its end 4 is beveled to co-act with the tapering face of recess 12 in wall 11. Said arm is also slotted or recessed at an intermediate point between its end and base to socket one end of link 8 which is aiiixed pivotally thereto by a pin 15. The other end of this link is rotatably fixed in a slotted seat in wall 11 by a pin 16 anchored in the top and bottom walls of box member 2. Link 8 is provided with a side projection 17 which serves to limit its tilting movement in one direction by engagement with wall 11, and the turning movement of the door and its hinge member 5 relatively to this link is also limited by the projection 17, especially in opening the door, see Fig. 2.
Now, assuming the door to be closed as in Fig. 1, the first slight opening movement of the door carries it outward with very little or no longitudinal movement, a slight separation between the cam wall 9 and the arm 7 being allowed for this purpose. Then the rounded end of arm 7 efigages and rides over the rounded cam part 10 of said wall and immediately forces the door longitudinally forward while a turning or swinging movement on the main pivot pin 16 and the secondary pivot pin 15 also occurs. This end-thrust movement of the door reaches its maximum when arm '7-strikes projection 17 on link 8 and thereafter the link 8 and hinge member 5 turn as one on pivot pin 16. The
degree of end thrust movement thus ob tained may be greater or less dependent upon the form and size of cam part 10 and the requirements of clearance between the corners 18 and 19 on the door and easing respectively, and particularly the project ing and overlapping molding or borderpiece 20 on the door. Border-piece 20 conceals the joint line and metal parts and when used in connection with my improved hinge provides a very close and tight joint of good appearance and finish.
In closing movements of the door the link 8 and hinge member 5 turn as one part until the beveled end 14 of arm. 7 engages the beveled edge of recess 12 in wall 11 whereupon the door is forcibly drawn inward or toward box member 2 until the parts are closely seated and brought together with a tight joint.
In Fig. 2, roller 21 occupies the same relation and effects the same result as cam part 10, and may be used in lieu thereof to minimize friction and wear between the parts, or this roller may be mounted on the arm 7 as is obvious.
What I claim is:
1. A hinge for doors comprising a box member adapted to seat within the edge of a casing and a plate member adapted to be aflixed to the door, a link pivotally uniting said members having a stop projection, and
