To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER F.;I-In'.- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Sewing and Trimming Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in sewing machines, and especially to a sewing and trimming machine for use in the manufacture of shoes.
The inventionis herein shown as applied to the well known Union Special shoe trimming machine, such as illustrated in the patent granted Muther, Woodward and Holland, on November 2, 1897, No. 592,806.
.In the manufacture of boots and shoes,
and in the operations upon thetops thereof,
it has been heretofore proposed to provide machines for trimming the free edge more or less within the line of the folded edge, and for this purpose among other arrange ments, it has been proposed to employ a cutter bar having a blade which moves in an angular direction transverse to the line of feed, whereby the blade may pass under the folded edge, and cooperates with a throat plate beveled at its under side to receive the inclined blade, with an edge guide serving to guide the edge of the material from under which projects the edge of the material to be trimmed, means being provided to lift the edge guide when the trimmer is not in operation, and move it laterally away from the line of stitching.
The particular use to which my present invention is to be applied, is in connection with top stitching, the guide being out of engagement with the edge of the material when the trimmer is in operation, and being in engagement with the top edge of the shoe, when the trimmer is out of operation, and while the construction of the guide and its supporting and operating means are novel, and may be applied to other uses, such, for example, as trimming and guiding at the same time, and I intend to claim the said mechanism for supporting and operating the guide as broadly as possible, the particular present object of the invention, is as above set forth.
The invention consists in the various matters hereinafter described and referred t in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a sewing machine embodying my invention, the edge guide being shown as raised from the work,

This trimmer frame is operatively connected, as shown at L, L, with the rock shaft M, which is operated from the driving shaft C, in the manner set forth in the above entitled patent 0 represents a guide, and N a slide, which is moved back and forth upon the guide 0 by means of the lever P, connected at its lower end with the slide N, through the link P. For operating this lever, it is provided with a projecting arm or hand piece 1, above the cloth plate.

It will be seen by this construction, that by shifting the lever P, the trimming mechanism will be thrown into and out of operation, or as set forth in the patent above referred to.
Carried bythe trimmer frame L is a projection 1, extending toward the right hand side of the machine, which has secured to it a wire pronged piece, the prongs of which, 2, 2, have right angle projecting ends 3, extending toward the rear of the machine, these being arranged thus for a purpose hereinafter referred to. It will be seen that as the trimmer frame is shifted to be thrown into and out of operation, the prongs will also be raised and lowered therewith.
Attached to the head of the machine in a suitable manner is the bracket at, provided with bearings 5, at the front and rear, in which is pivoted the pin or shaft 6, to which is attached the hook-shaped wire 7, the hook of which embraces the projecting pin 8 on the upper end of the rod 9, to which, at its lower end is attached an edge guide 16, of any desirable construction, this edge guide passing through openings in bearing lugs or plates 11, projecting from the part 5. The edge guide supporting rod 9, has also a projection 12, passing through a slot in the arm 13 of one of the lugs 11. It will be seen, therefore, that as the shaft 6 is 0scillated, the edge guide will be raised and lowered. To provide for the oscillation by the operator of the shaft 6 to raise and lower positively the edge guide, I secure to the right face of the shaft 6 the bracket 11, by the screws 15, this bracket having a flat projecting plate or segment 16, having a series of notches 17 therein. Upon the plate 16 is pivoted the fiat thumb piece T, having on its under surface a spring pin 18, adapted to engage the notches 17 of the plate 16.
Upon the thumb piece T is secured the plate 19, having the upwardly projecting framework 20, between the side walls 21 of which is arranged the stud 22, between which side walls and the stud are supported upon pins, springs 23. To a projection 24 on the frame 20 at one side is pivoted a link 25, which at its opposite end is pivoted to the lug 26, on the frame 27, pivoted as at to the collar 29 on the end of the shaft 6, this frame :27 having wings as 30 andJSI, provided with slots as shown, adapted when the wings are set by the thumb piece T, to engage respectively the pieces 3 of the prong carried by the trimmer frame. A spring bearing upon a projection 34 from the shaft 6, keeps the shaft 6 and edge guide supporting frame, normally in the position to which it has been adjusted by the operator.
It will be seen that when the spring pin 18 is in engagement with the central one of the notches 17, that the edge guide will remain in the position to which it has been set, witl ut regard to whether the trimmer is thrown into or out of operation, at this time the pivoted wings being both of them free from the path of movement of the prongs on the trimmer plate. When the trimmer has been thrown into operation, the edge guide lowered, and the thumb piece pushed toward the rear of the machine, so that the pin 18 will engage the rear notch 17, the edge guide will be in position to guide the work, the trimmer will reciprocate, and the projecting part 3 of the prong nearest the trimmer frame will move up and down freely in the slot in the wing 30. By manipulating the lever P to throw the trimmer out of operation, the member 3 will, as the trimmer frame comes up, engage the slot in the wing 30, and tilt the shaft, throwing the edge guide out of position, so that in the movement of the machine the trimmer will be idle, and the edge guide will be out of engagement with the edge of the material. By moving the thumb piece toward the front of the machine, so that the pin 18, engages the forward notch 17, and throwing the trimmer into operation, the part 3 of one of the prongs will engage the slot in the wing 31, and the trimmer will reciprocate while the edge guide Will remain raised, as the shaft has been tilted. By throwing the trimmer out of operation, said part 3 having an upward movement imparted to it will engage the top part of the slot in the wing 31, thus throwing the edge guide downward into operative position with regard to the needle. It will be seen by this arrangement, a series of combinations of edge guide and trimmer may be used, but, as above stated, the parficular purpose for which the present arrangement is intended to be used, is that combination in which the trimmer is operative and the edge guide out of engagement with the work, or vice versa.
The advantage of throwing the edge guide into and out of operation when the trimmer is in both operative and inoperative positions, is as follows: When the trimmer is in inoperative position, and the edge guide is cooperating with the edge of the material to be stitched, it is at the same time desirable to have the edge guide so that it can also be thrown into inoperative position, or be out of the way when it becomes necessary to turn a square corner, using the needle as a pivotal point. If the edge guide were in operative position at the time the corner is turned, the material would strike the edge guide. If the material being sewed weie patent leather and it were allowed to strike the guide, it would result in damaging the leather by cracking the enamel. When the trimmer is in operative position, or in contact with the work, it is desirable at the same time to have the edge guide so that it can be thrown out of operation, as well as into operative position. "When in operative position, it prevents the operator from trimming off too much of the body of the material, as the edge guide would prevent that being done. If it be desirable to sew and trim through the middle of a piece of material, it would be necessary to throw the edge guide up out of the way, otherwise it would be necessary to raise it with the hand of the operator to get it on top of the material, which would also be objectionable, as it would have a retarding effect upon the material, which the feed dog in moving the fabric forward, would have to overcome.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a sewing machine, suitable stitchforming mechanism and a trimmer, means for throwing said trimmer into and out of operation, an edge guide, a support therefor, and means for adjusting the position of said edge guide, whereby it may be thrown into and out of operation by the action of the trimmer mechanism, as the position of the trimmer from operative to inoperative position or vice versa, is varied; substantially as described.
2. In combination with the trimming .mechanism of a sewing machine, with means for throwing it into and out of operation, an edge guide, means for supporting said edge guide, said support having members adapted to enga e a part of the trimming mechanism, in t e shifting of the latter, and means foradjusting the position of said members, to cause one or the other to be engaged by said portion of the trimming mechanism; substantially as described.
3. In, combination with the trimming mechanism of a sewing machine, with means for throwing it into and out of operation, an edge guide, a support therefor, means for raising and lowering said support positively, and for raising and lowering it by the shifting of the trimming mechanism from operative to inoperative position, and vice versa, said means including members on said support, with means for adjusting them to position to be engaged by a moving part of the trimming mechanism; substantially as described.

to bring opposite portions of it into the path of the trimming mechanism to be en gaged thereby when said trimming mechanism is shifted; substantially as described.
6. The combination with a trimming mechanism, and means for throwing it into and out of operation, of a movable edge guide, a support therefor, a pivoted frame on said edge guide support, having wings with means for adjusting sai'd pivoted frame to bring one or the other of said wings into the path of the trimming, mechanism to be engaged thereby when it is shifted; substantially as described.
7. The combination with a trimmin mechanism, and means for throwing it i and out of operation, of an edge guide, a support therefor, means for raising and lowering said support, comprising a pivoted frame with connections between it, and the support, wings carried by said frame, and means for adjusting the wings to cause them to be brought into and out of the path of the trimming mechanism during its shi .t from one position to another; substantially described.

10. A sewing machine, including incombination, a movable part, an edge guide, a support therefor, an oscillating shaft, a connection between the oscillating shaft and the edge guide support for raising and lowering the latter as the shaft is oscillated, means for oscillatin said shaft directly, means for oscillating sald shaft by the shifting of said movable part, including a frame supported by said shaft and constructed to swing on an axis transverse to the axis of the shaft, whereby the said frame may be brought into the path of the movable part.
11. In a sewing machine, the edge guide, the support therefor, the oscillating shaft, the connection between the support and shaft, the thumb piece pivoted on said shaft, the frame supported on the machine having wings, and-aeonnections between the thumb piece and the frame to swing the latter on its pivot and vary the position of the wings, and a movable member adapted to engage the wings; substantially as described.
15. In a sewinglmachine, the edge guide, the support therefor, the oscillating shaft, the connection between the support and shaft. the thumb piece pivoted on said shaft, the frame havin wings, and connections between the thum piece and the frame to swing the latter on its .pivot and vary the position of the ,wings, and a moving part having projections adapted to en age the respective wings; substantially as escribed.
16. In a sewing machine, the edge guide, the support therefor, theoscillating shaft, the connection between the support and shaft, the thumb piece pivoted on said shaft, the frame, havin wings, and connections between the thum piece and the frame to swing the latter on its pivot and vary the position of the wings, and a moving part having projections adapted to engage the respective wings, and the spring catch on the thumb piece engaging the shaft; substantially as described.
17. In a sewing machine, a trimmer, means for throwing said trimmer in and out of operation, an edge guide and means for supporting and automatically shifting its position with respect to the throat plate of the machine as the trimmer is shifted from operative to inoperative osition, or vice versa substantially as described. I

In a sewing machine of a needle, a trimmer and ing means for throwing said trimmer into the combination and out of operation, an edge guide, means for supporting said edge guide, and means for ad uStmg said edge guide into different positions with relation to said trimmer and trimmer adjustneedle, said trimmer adjusting means and said edge guide adjusting means including a single lever.
19. The combination with a trimming mechanism and means for throwing it into and out of operation, of an edge guide, a movable snpport therefor, movable yielding wings pro ecting therefrom and adapted to be set to engage cooperating members car- 10 ried by the trimming mechanism, and means for adjusting the wings so that one or the other of said wings will engage its cotiperat ing member on the trimming mechanism; substantially as described.
