across to an arm on said shaft cam 45 on the shaft QG, the upwardly-projecting end of said bell-crank levei` H being connected to a rod 46 which extends roching of tion to the ioot 4l through the arm 39 and` levers 3l' and 3S.
It will be seen that by having the revolving hook and 'eedoperated in the vertical horn, a coat, or other garment, may be slipped over said horn in such a manner as to allow the operator to sew in close places, such as coat pockets, where it is impossible to operate the usual flat base machines.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a modification in which the re\olving hook 49 is placed 'on a vertical' plane.
Havin thus described what I c aim is:
i 1. In a sewing machine the combination of a base, a vertical work supporting horn my invention,
'projecting upwardly from one side of said base, :in arm projecting from the opposite sideV of said base and extending over said horn, a mainshai't inonnted in said arm, a needle bar mounted in the outer end of -said arm and adapted to be operated vertically by said main shaft, means connecting the needle bar with said main shaft for operating the needle laterally, a vertical shaft in mesh with the main shaft; aV shaft 2G having one end in mesh Withv the said vertical shaft and the other end provided with a gear-wheel, a shaft 29 having one en d in mesh with the shaft 26 and havinga beveled gear 'wheel on the other end, a vertical shaft 32 having a gear Wheel on its lower' end in mesh with the gear wheel on the shaft 29, a revolving hook on the upper end of the shaft 32; a'feed foot mounted inv said vertical horn; and meansV connecting the main shaft with said feed foot for operating the same vertically and latcrall v.
ln a sewing' machine thc vcombination ot' a hase, a vertical work supporting horn projectingupwardly from one side oli' said hase, an arm projecting from the opposite side ot' said hase and extending over said horn, a main shaft mounted in said arm, a .needle bar mounted in the outer end of said arm and adapted to be operated vertically b vsaid main shat'tymeans connecting,r the needle bar with the main shaft for operating the needle laterally, a vertical shaft in mesh with the main shaft, a shaft :ZG having one end in mesh with the said vertical shaft and the other end provided with a gear-wheel, a shaft '29.h'aving one end in mesh with the shaft 26 and having a beveled gear wheel on' the other end, a vertical shaft 32 having a gear wheel on its lower end in mesh with the gear wheel on the shaft 2t), a revolving hook onA the upper end of the shaft 32, a rock shaft 35 having' a rock arm 3G, a lever 37 having one Vend connected to said rock arm 3b' and its opposite end hifur'cated, a feed bar havin its lower end pivoted to the lever 3i' an i s upper end carrying -a feed foot, and a ioclcshaft 4U having` a bifurcated arm 47, a cam on the shaft 26 over which the bifur- :ated arm 47 fits. e
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in presente ol ,two wi nesses.
