In order to lock the compartment and ratchet wheels from rotation when the apparatus isV at rest, a longitudinally movable bolt, designated by letter S, which is mounted to move through slots in the bracket arm S fastened to the plate M2, is thrown into engagement with one or another of the slots in the liange of the ratchet wheel through the medium of the lspring R2, fastened at one end to the bracket member and t e other end to one end of a pin R4 which is fastened to said bolt, the
' other end of the pin being adapted to en` gage the cam or inclined edge of the bar L when the latter is moved forward by the pull bar. Said cam edge'of the bar L, it will be noted, will hold the bolt out ofthe slots until the bar L returns to its normal position, after which the bolt will be thrown by the spring attached thereto into one of the slots and hold the wheels from rotation.
The operation of my invention is as follows 1-W`hen it is desired to dispense any commodity from the apparatus, the operator may bring one or another of the compartments in the rotatable wheel so that one particular compartment will register with the opening normally closed by the sliding door. This is accomplished by the pulling out upon the pull rod which will cause the angle bar L to be drawn forward under. the tension of the spring and the suctionupon the piston within the air pump, the rod of which is pivotally connected to said bar L, the spring-pressed pawl turnin idly over a single tooth of the ratchet whee When the operator releases the pull rod, the spring and piston within the pump will cause the angle ar L to return to its normal position and the pawl which engages the teeth of the ratchet wheel will cause an intermittent movement to be imparted to the ratchet and compartment wheels. in the outer move mont of the pull rod, the cam edge of the angle bar L coming in contact with the pin upon the bolt will cause the latter to he pulled out of the retaining)l notch in the flange upon the ratchet wheel so as to allo vv beenmoved `forward the latter to make a 'partial revolution on the return movement of the bar L. When it is desired to remove thetcommodity from the opening -closed by thesliding door, it will be necessary to drop a coin in the slot A2, the same rolling down and engaging the slot in .the lug lG` upon said latch, after which,
when a person takes hold of the handle upon the door and pushes the same back, the coin will press against the latch and throw the lug at the end thereof out of the'notch F" and which will allow the door to open.' When the door is o en, the long arm F of said angle lever wi l engage the recess in the ull rod and will prevent the latter bein pu led out until the door is closed, whic latter movement will throw the angle bar so that the roove in the under edge of the long arm F thereof will come adjacent to the pull bar and allow the same to .be operated by an outward pull thereon. After the coin has been utilized to throw the latch out of a disen aging relation with the notch, it will fal by gravity in the latch and, when the door is closed, the spring which bears against the latch will throw the lug at the end thereof in engagement with the notch in the angle lever and hold the same locked.
