ARTHUR S. KNIGHT, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO WESTINGHOUSE LAMP COMPANY, A. CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
INOANDESOENT LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed November 8, 19 09. Serial No. 526,045.
Patented Nov. 10, 1914.
To all guhom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, ARTHUR S. KNIGHT,
a subject of the King of Great Britain, and
a resident of Newark in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Incandescent Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electric incandescent lamps and it has for its object to provide a am in which the filament is symmetrically isposed with respect to the arbor and .in which the arbor is so constructed s to be capable of withstanding a very high de ree of heat without injury.
The single gure of the accom anying drawing is a side view of a lamp em odying the present invention.
Extending centrally through the bulb of the lamp and from one end to near its other end, is an arbor comprising a tubular stem portion 1 and a wire portion 2 that 1s mounted in a short extension 3 of the stem portlon 1 and is preferabl composed of nickel. Ex tending through t e tubular stem portion of the arbor are terminal leads 4 and 5 that therefrom into the bulb of the lamp and are provided with looped inner extremities. Pro ecting laterally from the extension 3, nd upon the op osite side of the arbor from the terminal eads is a resilient filament sup ort 6 having a hooked extremity. Upon the free end of the wire portion 2 of the arbor is a glass tip 7 in which are mounted resilient filament supports 8 that extend for a short distance in the direction of the arbor and are then bent to project laterally from the axis thereof, the extremities being hooked. The said supports are also displaced around the axis of the arbor approximately 90 from the supports 6. A reversely bent filament 9, havin hooked extremities that engage the loope ends of the terminal leads, extends between the said leads and is supported at its intermediate bight portions y means of links 10 that are, in turn, supported by the hooked extremities of the filament supports. Filaments of large cross-section are preferably shaped upon a former before app ication to their supports, so that when applied to the supports, they are maintained thereby undera suitable degree of tension to prevent their sagging. The portion of the arbor of the lamp that is in such close proximity to the filament as to be heated thereby to a high degree, being constructed of wire, is not detrimentally affected by the heat. The arrangement of the filament and its supports with respect to the arbor is also such that an exceptionally good distribution of light occurs.
I claim as my invention:
1. An incandescent lamp comprising an arbor, a pair 'of terminal leads and a filament support projecting laterally from substantially opposite sides of the arbor near one end thereof, two filament supports projecting from opposite sides of the arbor at its other end and displaced around the axis of the arbor approximately 90 from the aforesaid filament support, and a substantially W-shaped filament extendin be tween the terminal leads and carried t ereby and by the said filament support.
2. An incandescent lamp comprising an arbor, a pair of terminal leads and a resilient filament su port projecting laterally from substantially opposite sides of the arbor near one end thereof, two resilient filament su ports projecting from opposite sides of t e arbor at its other end and displaced around the axis of the arbor approximately 90 from the aforesaid filament support, and a substantially W-shaped filament extending between the terminal leads and carried thereby and by the said filament supports.
3. An incandescent lamp comprising a substantially W-sha ed filament t e mi dle and outer legsof w ich respectively occupy different planes that are angularly disposed with respect to each other.
4. An incandescent lamp comprising an arbor and a substantially W-shaped filament the middle le s of which are located upon the opposite si e of the arbor from the outer or end legs thereof. 4
In testimony whereof, .I have hereunto subscribed my name thisv 18th day of October, 1909.
