lle it known that l, ALvIs C. CRiMMnL, a. citizen oi the United States, residing at l-lartford City, in the county of Blacktord and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Metal Cap, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to caps for bottles or jars and more particularly to that class of caps which are provided with. discharge outlets.
The object of the present invention is to provide cap with a discharge outlet extending therethrough, with suitable means for the closing of said outlet, and which means will be rugged in construction and therefore amply able to withstand the hard usage to which articles of this class are subjected.
A further object is to provide a metal cap, with a discharge opening, a lever pivotally secured to the cap and extending beyond the outer edge of the cap to engage a wire guard or guide. A closure plate is pivotally secured to the metallic cap and also to the said lever so that it is moved thereby to thus come into alinement with and close the cap discharge openin A further object is to accomplish the foregoing features in a simple and expeditious manner such as will result in the simple and cheap production of the device and therefore eminently practical.
With the foregoing and other objects in proceeds, the invention resides in the com bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, with out departing from the spirit of the invention.

with strengthening ribs 5 upon the top plate 6 so that a strong construction will be provided. The cap -l is threaded as at 7 and by means of which the cap is adapted to engage the mouth of a bottle or jar.
The top plate 6 is provided with the opening 8 extending therethrough and which opening forms a discharge outlet for the contents of the bottle or jar, thus rendering the material within the bottle or jar available without necessitating that the cap be removed. The lever 9 is pivotally secured as at 10 to the center of the top plate 6, projects outwardly beyond the outer extremitythereoi and is curled to form the handle 11. The extreme end of the handle ll is upturned to form the flange 12, which flange contacts with the inner surface of a wire guide or guard 13, the latter being concentric with the center of the cap and rigidly secured thereto by thearms let. The upstanding flange 12 contacting With the guard 13 prevents the handle and lever from being moved upwardly such as would produce a tearing or bending action upon the rivet 10 which would in time sever the lever irom the top plate. The arms 14 provide a stop against which the handle 11 contacts, thus limiting the motion of the handle.
A valve plate 15 is pivotally secured to the under surface oi the top plate 6 by the rivet 10 and said plate is substantially segmental in shape and is provided with its outer peripheral edge curled upward as at 16 and which upstanding portion fits within the groove 17 defined by the lowermost thread and thus holds the said valve plate down tightly against the inner or lower surface of the top plate (3. This is of particular importance as it has been found that unless some such means be provided, the contents of the bottle or ar will tend to wedge themselves beneath the valve plate and result in the bending of the valve plate which will materially interfere with the proper working of the device. This objection it will be apparent I have overcome in a most simple and effective manner.
The lever 9 is rigidly secured to and actuates the valve plate 15 by the rivet 18 and which rivet it might be stated holds the plate 15 and handle in spaced relation, the space being substantially equalto the thickness of the top plate 6 so that the handle 9 may move along the upper surface of the top plate 6 and the valve plate 15 may move below and at the same time be rigidly secured to the lever. Mention is made of the fact that the handle 11 contacts With the arms 14 prior to the rivet l8 reaching the side Wall of the opening 8 which in time would tend to cut the same in two.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim is 1. A device of the class described, comprising a cap, provided with a discharge opening, a lever pivotally secured to the said cap, a valve plate rigidly secured to said lever, and a guard extending a limited distance around and spaced from the side of said cap, said lever provided with an overturned portion in contact with said guard.
2. A cap provided with a discharge opening, a lever pivotally secured to the upper surface of said cap, a valve plate pivotally secured to the inner surface of said cap and rigidly secured to said lever, the connection therebetween extending through the discharge opening, a guide extending concentrio with the said cap, said guide being connected to said cap by substantially radially extending legs, said lever being provided with an overturned portion engaging said guide, said legs constituting stops for the movement of said lever and being arranged in the path of motion of the overturned portion of said lever.
3. A circular cap provided with a discharge opening, a valve plate pivotally secured at the center of said cap, a lever pivotally secured to and centrally of said cap and rigidly secured to said valve plate for the actuation thereof, and cooper-able meanscarried by the free end of the lever and by the cap for guiding the lever and limiting its latitude of oscillation.
