To all whom, it may concern Be it known 'that l, Sinonimi) Loom, a citizen oll the United States, residinw in the city of Philadelphia, county ot' lililladclphia, and State ol Pennsylvania, have invvented certain improvements in @synchronizing Apparatus, of which the following; is a specilication. I
My invention is a synchronizingg, apparatus designed primarily for use in harnionizng the actions oit phonographs and kinetoscopes so that related pictures and sounds may he properly coordinated.
lt is the leading purpose of my invention to produce an apparatus ot' iniin'oved character which' will orally signal the operator. that the speed of the manually operated lcinetoscope is either too fast or too slow, as vfell as visuali y indicate the relation lietween the pictures and words oi the two instruinents.
The characteristic features ot my i1nproven'ients are lia-ily disclosed in the follow ing description and the acxconlpanlvine drawings in illustration thereof.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figaro l is a view illustrating my invention diagranr matically; Fig. 2 is a view ol the circuit making and breaking apparatus with parts broken away; lfig. 3 is a side elevation of the apparatus shown in lfig. .25 i is a partial sectional view taken on the line -l-i of Fig. 2; and lig. 5. is a partial sectional view illnstrating the `relation of contacts to the revolnhlc circuit making and breaking disk.
The mechanism comprises the phono'- graph l having the revolalile shalt lb which carries the dislrlc. rThis shalt has lifted thereon the spar gear l which engages and revolves a pinion le on a shaft 1i revolved at several times the speed of the shaft lb. 0n' the shaft .lf is a commutator comprising the cylinder ig, insulated from the shaft lI .and having r:et in the recess l thereof the cylindrical sei.; lent 11, insulated from the shall't 'lI and 'the hody of the cylinder El. contact 'brush el: hears on the cylinder so that es the latter revolves the lorush. makes contact alternately with the body ot the cylinder and the section l1 insnv lated therefrom. [t contact brush hears on the loody of the commotator cylinder and hy the revolution thereof .is electrically con- Specileation et' Letters E'atent.

nected and disconnected, alternately, with the brush el.
A source ot electric energy, as the natterv o, is cminected hy a conductor "l with thel contact huish land by the conductors i, lll, ll and 1:5 with the contact brush the .fondnctor l2 containing the switch llt. lhr conductors l0 enter into the` electroniagnrts it whirl). with the conductors 9 and 'il'. are carried .'oy a metal base plate l5 'lrom which the plates S) and ll are separated ly in solution l5. An armature 1G has one and pivoted hy means of a stud 17 on .the plate l5 and the other end coiinected lry means ot a coiled spring 1H with a holt ll which is held in adjustable relation to the post lo on the plate. 15, posts il on the plate liinithigl the arc ol oscillation ol" the armature, which lies lietiveen rhein. )tn arin 22, fixed on the armatore and extending transversely therlf to. has pivotvd thereto a liavi il?, pressed hy a spring; ratchet wheel :2.5, engaged hy the paivl 23B, lixed on a vertical .spindle ill? which is revolnhle in the hearings *il and 2i lined on the plate, the spindle revolving a conductingj indicatingn har 28 4lined thereto. A pawl Qi), pivoted by means ol a post 3() on the plate 1.5 and pressed hy a spring;P 31 lifted to the plate, engages the ratchet `theel to prevent it and the indicator har troni movilizap backward.
It liinetoscope 52 has its shalt J3 (which is revolved by the handle Ill-l cornlected through the gears 33 and 35; `with the shalit 35. 'llhe sha lt 35 is connected hy a flexible shaft 35a with the worm shaft 36, which. is journaled in the hearings Pil" on the plate 1:3. The worin shaft BG engages the ivorni Wheel 38, which is join-nailed hy 1 sans ol the post 39 on the plate l5, a pinion vl-U loeing fixed to the Worm `wheel and revolved thereby. .lhe pinion l0 enga fes a gear wheel l1 which is revoluhle on the spindle 25 and has fined thereto the Marinated dishv segment el@ with the ring; t3. 'llhe .indicator bar 28 has a conbfici piece an enrl thereof by the pins movable 'hrongh the bar, ehe piece being held down by springs 5l and aclaplecl for making contact with the parts 4-, 4G and 4l?.
A posh has thereon an insulating block 52 to which is secured conbact brushes and which engaffe ihe ri frs m and connected with Winch or A source of electric energj` as a baery 5e, 1s connecied by the conductors 5T, '5S f i with the contact 53; hy the conductors 56, 60, 6l and ('32 with the contact 5i, and by the. conductor 63 with the plaize l5; che conductor 57 conaining the hell Se, the con doctor (SO containing the hamer the conductor containing the sii'itch (Rifond the conduc'cors 58 and 6l being separated from the plate 15 by the insulation 15.
To follows from the -foregoing consruction that when Aihe phonograph is in operation and the switch 13 closed, the conininletor revohf'ing in engagement with 'he coni-lachs and 5 will sin na'elv s c ri break circuit combining' the clutroniagne'ts ler, which, when the circuitI is closed, draw 'iffhen he co1,- segment e?, '1
