UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES R. FLEMING, OF SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
MINE-CAR-IDOOR LATCH-PLATE.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES R. FLEMING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mine-Car-Door Latch- Plate, 01: which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to protect the wooden frame forming the door opening; to provide reversible latches; and to simplify and cheapen the construction of cars of the character named.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an end view of a, car having latch plates constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a. top view of a latch plate constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention, showing in connection therewith a section of a corner fragment of a car and ot' the locking latch for the door thereot'; Fig. 3 is a side view of the latch-plate, showing a. corner fragment ot the car and of the latch for holding the door thereof; Fig. -ft is a pers 'iective view, on an enlarged scale, of the latch-plate.
As shown in the drawings, cars 01 the character mentioned are provided with sides constructed from heavy wooden timbers 9. The timbers 9 are suitably bolted to metal side :t'raming members 10, which in turn are secured to brackets 11, at the upper ends whereof are formed suitable bearings for a hinge shaft 12. lhe timbers 9 form the opening" for a door 13, which. door tits between the ends of said timbers. The blank forming the door 123 is bolted to hinge straps 1 1.
()n the center hinge strap 14, latch arms 15 are pivoted. These arms are guided in a central loop 16 and two side loops 17. Said loops are constructed from metal, and are of conventional shape. The ends of the latch arms 15 rest in recesses 18 0t latch plates 19.

when the plates are secured in service position. The latch plates 19 are mounted on the side sills Q5 oi the car, in such manne that the inner wall ot the recess 18 is flush with the edge ot the wooden timbers fl oi the car body. \Vhen, in the operation of the car, the attendant at the dumping station strikes the latch arms 15, to lift the same out of engagement with the plate 1!), the blow is received upon the walls oi the recesses 18, and the wear of the timbers J above referred to, is avoided. It will be observed that because of the shape of the plates ll), whereby the recesses 18 are provided with a wall at both sides thereof, said plates may be reversed or interchanged at will.
( laim.
in combination, a body having sides formed from boards, the ends whereof are exposed; a door pivoted to swing between the ends of said boards to rest llush therewith when closed: a plurality of latch arms pivoted on said door to overhang said sides; a plurality of latch-plates for said arms, each of said plates having a base, supporting webs and a top opening socket recess. said recess having Front and rear walls; and means engaging said base for holding said plate on said body with the rear wall of the socket of said plates flush with the edges o'l said sides.
