VI'V'AN V. NORTON, 0F BATAVIA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 FRANK C. COCHRAN, OF BATAVIA, NEW YORK.
'VALVE ATTACHMENT.
inicios.I
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Vivan V. NoR'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Batavia, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in valve attachments for pneumatic tires and has for its object the provision of a device which will permit the operator to test the tire without removing the pump therefrom.
Another object of my invention is the provision of such a device which may be easily and quickly applied to a valve of the ordinary construction without materially chang ing any part thereof.
A further object of my invention is the provision of such a device which may be easily,y quickly and cheaply manufactured and will provide such a means which may be easily operated.
With the above and other objects in view I will now proceed to describe the invention in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in Which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved valve attachment showing the same as it would appear when applied to a valve of the ordinary construction from which the valve mechanism has been removed, and Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fi 1, showing the same as it would appear W en applied to a valve with the valve mechanism left therein.
Reference being had more particularly to the drawings 1 indicates a tire of the ordinary construction havin secured therein the usual valve stem 2. T is valve stem 2 is preferably provided at its upper extremity with the suitable internal and external screw threads 2e and 2b respectively as clearly` illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. This improved attachment preferably comprises the cylindrical portion 3 which terminates at its upper extremity in the tubular members 4 and 5. These tubular members are preferably provided with the internal screw threads G, by means of which the body portions of the valves are adapted to be held in Specification of Letters Patent.

position in the` tubular members. This body portion preferably comprises the cylindrical portion 7, which is provided with external screw threads, to hold the same in place. This body portion is provided with the longitudinal central bore 8 which is enlarged near its lower extremity as illustrated at 9 and is adapted to receive the valve stem 10. This valve stem 10 is provided at its upper extremity with the enlarged portion 11 and intermediate its ends with the flattened portion 12, the use of which willbe more fully hereinafter described. A suitable washer 13 is adapted tollie intermediate the enlarged portion x12 and abut the shoulder formed by the upper extremity of the enlarged bore 9. A suitable coil spring 14 is adapted to surround the stem 10 and abut the washer 13 at its upper end and the shoulder 15, formed by the lower terminal of the enlarged bore 9.
Formed integrally with the Walls of the tubular members 4 and 5 at a point where they join I preferably provide the downwardly extending pin 16 which extends partially into the ends of the Y-shaped member, and terminates at its lower extremity in a suitable enlarged portion 17, which is adapted to abut the' upper end of the valve operating mechanism when the device is used as illustrated in Fig. 2.
It will be vapparent from the'fore oing that when it is desired to make use o this improved valve attachment the same may be secured to the upper extremity of the valve through the medium of the screw threads formed thereon. Should the operator so desire he may previously remove the valve operating mechanism which is usually contained in'thc valve stem, or it may remain therein as shown in Fig. 2. It will be clearly seen that when left as illustrated in Fig. 2 the pin 16 will engage the upper extremity of the valve stem and thereby open the same, thus permitting a free passage for the air through the stem, and the only closures will be the valves contained in the tubular members 4t and 5. A suitable pump may be then attached to either of the stems and a suitable pressure gage or other testing device secured to the opposite stem.
Thus, it will be seen that the operator may be able to determine, during the time he is pumping a tire, the quantity of air contained therein and the pressure thereof.
While in the foregoing I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that thespecific arrangement `end combination of partsY may be changed Without in any Way departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined inthe appended claim. lVVhztt is claimed is I The combination with a'valve for a pneu- 'matic tire; of a, Y-shaped member, the arms of said af-shped member being cylindrical incross'section end the stem of said Y- shaped member v being substantially cylindriadapted to Abel removably .secured "to the upper ends of the arms to V 'form closures therefor, valves removably secured Within each' of the arms, :mdaJ projection` extend-- Ving partly into the ends of the' Y-sha'ped member and arranged, to engage the upper end' ofthe valve-*plunger of 'thel .pneumatic tire 'upon'whichcthe device is being used free passage of air therethrough.
