Be it known that L'ALBERT A. Giaon, citizen of the United States, residing at Frank lin, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drill-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drill presses, and more especially to improvelnents in feed-shaftsupports for the drill press shown and certain features, whereof, and to which this invention is related, are fully described in Letters Patent of the United States issued to Leslie H. Colburn on the 13th day of February 1912, No.
1,017,635, and on the 22nd day of July 1913,
No. 1,068,324, both of which Letters Patent and the inventions covered thereby have been duly issued to the Colburn Machine Tool Company, of Franklin, Pa.
The construction, object, and utility of this invention are herein set forth with sufficient clearness to enable those skilled in the art of machine-tool construction, to make and use the same. 1
The construction whereby my invention is embodied, is fully illustrated in the drawings, the various figures of which are as follows:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a drill press, showing my improved feedshaft-support applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the feed mechanism with the shaft-support removed f r the purpose of more clearly illustrating the construction of said mechanism, that the application and utility of'said support may be more clearly pointed out. Fig. 3 is a front elevationof said feed mechanism showing the applicatio-n of said support thereto.
It will be noted, from an inspection of said drawings, that the feed mechanism here shown, is that whereby the spindle 1 of the drill press is actuated for the purpose of feeding the drill to its work, when said drill is in operation. This feed mechanism consists of a revoluble shaft 2, upon'which, a pinion 3 is rigidly secured and arranged to mesh with the rack 4, upon the spindlesleeve 5. The inner end of said shaft is provided with a bearing within the column 12 of the press. Upon the outer end of said shaft 2 is mounted a worm-wheel 6 which is arranged to revolve said shaft 2. For the purpose of driving said worm-wheel a worm DRILL-PRESS.
7 is provided, which engages said wheel, and is mounted upon a shaft 7 which is provided with bearings 7 upon the pivoted bracket 8, which has its pivotalpoint about 'the shaft 9, that passes through the rear end of said bracket,and bymeans of which said worm-shaft '7 18 drlven through the gears adapted to move vertically in such a manner that said worm may be engaged with Patented Nov. 3, 1914. 7 Application filed October 25,1913. The forward end of said bracket 8 is and disengaged from the wheel 6 which it actuates. For the purpose of accomplishs ing said-vertical movement of said bracket, I provide a cam-lever 10 and mount the same upon a pin 11', one end of which is inserted in the frame or column 12 of said press. The construction of this feed mechanism is such that both the shaft 2 and the pin 11 necessarily project for a considerable distance outward from their bearings in said column 12 and when heavy work is being done by'the drill, there is afstres's between 1 said worm and gear that tends to spring them out of mesh andthus to spring shaft 2 and pin 11 apart, and to counteract this tendency and prevent such springing'apart of said shaft and pin I connect the projecting ends thereof by means of a supporting Y yoke which comprises, at its upper end, a
capped bearing 13 for the reception and .engagement of said shaft 2, and atthelower end thereof, a solid bearing 1a for the reception and engagement of the outer end of the pin 11 which projects beyond said cam 10. Inasmuch as it is necessary to position said support outside of the index plate 15, (which is fully described in said Letters Patent No. 1,017,635) which is graduated and provided with means to gage and indicate the depth of holes to be drilled, it is desirable that the yoke construction be such as not to materially obstruct the operators view of said plate 15, and for this reason said bearings 13' and 1 1 areconnected together by means of armsle, which are positioned a considerable distance apart, so that the indicator 1'? and the graduations upon said plate 15, when in proximity to said indicator, are plainly in. view. Tb rough the application of said voke, shaft 2 and pin 1 are mutuall supported and held in the proper relation to each other, so that any tendency, on part of said worm gear to spring them apart, and thus permit an improper meshing of said worm and gear wheel, which would result in inefiicient service, is prevented and the object of this in: vention is fully attained. l
I claim:

The combination with the column of a drill press, of a vertically-movable spindle, a sleeve for said spindle, a rack secured to said sleeve, a pinion meshing with said rack for the purpose of actuating said spindle longitudinally, a shaft for said pinion having a bearing for its inner end within said column, a worm-wheel afiixed to the outer end ofsaicl shaft, a worm positionedbelow said wheel, and arranged to be operatively engageable therewith and disengageable therefrom, a pivotal bracket provided with bearings for said worm, means for revolving said worm, a cam positionedv below said worm and adapted to actuate said bracket to cause the engagement of said Worm with said wheel,
