  • the objects of the invention are to improve upon the means for closing and sealing the covers of the metallic casings of such articles of manufacture as gas meters, which should be sealed against leakage and accessible from the outside. Difficulty has been experienced in securely sealing the covers of such devices and preventing leakage, and this invention is designed to enable an effectual seal to be produced, by means of solder or other suitable sealing material. CLOSURE FOR METALLIC RECEPTACLES.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVILLIAM T. DREW, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Vernon, Westchester county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Closures for Metallic Receptacles, of which the following is a although the invention may be used in any connection in which it is found applicable.
The objects of the invention are to improve upon the means for closing and sealing the covers of the metallic casings of such articles of manufacture as gas meters, which should be sealed against leakage and accessible from the outside. Difficulty has been experienced in securely sealing the covers of such devices and preventing leakage, and this invention is designed to enable an effectual seal to be produced, by means of solder or other suitable sealing material. It is desirable that the solder or sealing material be prevented from entering the inside of the casing which might interfere with the operative parts of themeter and in accordance with this invention means are provided for preventing the sealing material from entering the casing. Advantages which will be apparent in this invention as applied to meters will also apply to ordinary cans or other casings or receptacles in which it is desired to prevent thesealing material from entering the inside of the casing.
Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear and to all of these ends the invention consists of a closure for the openings of metallic casings or receptacles embodying the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter fully described and claimed in this specification and shown. in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a, perspective view of a metallic casing in the form of a casing for a gas meter embodying the invention with the covers in place; Fig. 2 is a similar perspective view with the covers removed; and Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal sectional view partly broken away taken through the closure on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a suitable metallic casing or receptacle to which the invention is applied. In this instance the receptacle is shown as a casmg for a gas meter, which contains the operative I parts of the meter. The metallic casing is provided with the top cover B and the side cover C adapted to close the openings respectively in the top and side of the casing.
A description of the closure for one opening will apply as well to the other opening.
As shown, the edge of the opening is bent outwardly from the body of the casing to form a retaining flange D" over which the cover C is placed. The cover C is provided with a bead E along its edge adapted to fit over the retaining flange D, and said cover is also provided with a securing flange F eX- tending outwardly from the bead E. The securing flange F is soldered or otherwise permanently sealed to the body portion of the casing as by means of the solder G or other suitable sealing material, and the sealing material also enters thespace between the bead E and the retaining flange D, which flange and bead prevent the sealing material G from entering the casing.
The bead or groove E of the cover is preferably a little wider than the thickness of the retaining flange D and said head E is of sufficient depth to permit the securing.

Some of the sealing material or solder will enter between the inside of the outer wall H of the bead E and the retainingflange D, but the height of said flange D will be suflicient to prevent the solder or sealing material from passing over the flange into the casing. in contact with the top of the retaining flange D, the solder or sealing material will be further prevented from passing over the flange into the casing.
In forming the edge of the cover C or of the cover B, the edge of the cover is first bent outwardly at J and then inwardly upon itself at H outside of the first bend J to form the bead or groove E. The edge of the cover is then bent at substantially right angles to the outer wall H of the head to' The retaining flange D is preferably of As the bead E lies single thickness of metal in order that the closure may be simple and cheap to manufacture.
The covers B and C, or any cover which- I ,readily loosened. by blows, jars and hard usage, thus preventing leakage. The construction of the closure is strong and secure and has been found to operate efliciently and well in usage. 1 term my closure a perma nent closure as distinguished from those closures in which the cover is adapted to be removed and replaced at will without sealing. I claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent the following:
1. A case or receptacle provided with an opening, the edge of the openin being bent the top of the retaining flange so as to form outwardly to form a retaining flange, and a cover for said opening, having a bead along 1ts edge adapted to fit over and contact wlth a joint therewith, but leaving a space between the outer wall of the flange and the inner wall of the bead and a flat securing flange on said cover extending outwardly from said bead, said securing flange being permanently sealed to the body portion, of the casing, a portion of the sealing material also entering the space between the bead and the retaining flange, which flange pre- ,vents the sealing material from entering the casing.
2. A case or receptacle provided with an opening, the edge ofth'e opening being bent outwardly from the body of the casing to 1 form a retaining flange, and a cover for said opening, the edge of the cover being provided with a bead or groove wider than the thickness of the retaining flange and fitting over and'contacting with said flange so as -e to form a tight joint therewith, the outer wall of said head being bent outwardly to form a flat securing flange, the adjacent surfaces of the flange and casing being parallel, the bead or groove being of sufficient depth to permit the securing flange to lie substantially flat upon the body portion of the casing outside of the retaining flange, and permanent sealing material applied to the seam between the securing flange and the vbody portion of the casing and also between the inside of the outer wall of the bead and the retaining flange, said retaining flange preventing the sealing-material from passing into the inside of the casing.
3. A case or receptacle provided with an and then inwardly upon itself outside of the first bend to form a bead or groove, and then bent at substantially right angles to the outer wall of the bead to form a flat securing flange, said bead or groove being wider than the width of the retaining flange and adapted to fit over and contact with [thesame so as to form a joint therewithand be-- ing of sufficient depth to permit the securing flange to lie substantially flat upon the body portion of the casing adj acent and out:
side of the retaining flange, said securing flange being ermanently sealed to the body portion of tie receptacle, a portion of the sealing material also entering the space between the outer wall of the bead and the retaining flange, which flange prevents the sealing material from entering the casing.
4:. A meter having an opening therein, upright flanges surrounding said opening, flat surfaced'walls extending appreciably from said flanges, a covering fitting over said opening so as to rest against the outer edges r of the flanges and approach closely their walls and the flat surfaced walls aforesaid,
and provided with flanges substantially parallel to the meter flanges, and otherexterior flanges projecting from the first, substantially at right angles to the'said first cover flanges, together with a solder fastening between and held to the two flanges of the cover and the flat surfaced walls and the upright flanges of the meter, all substantially as set forth. 1
5. A meter case or receptacle having an opening therein, substantially flanges adjacent said opening, flat surfaced walls extending appreciably from said flanges, a vcover fitting over said opening so as to rest against the outer edges of the flanges, said cover being provided with walls adapted to lie adjacent the upright flanges and with outwardly extending flanges projecting from said walls substantially at right angles thereto and adapted to lie adjacent the flat surfaced walls of the meter, together with a solder fastening between and held to the flanges of the cover and the flat surfaced walls of the meter and the walls of the cover and the upright flanges of, the
