GAR-COUPLING.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD J. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottumwa, in the county of VVapello and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to car couplers and has for its object, the production of a simple and efiicient means for allowing the couplers to be automatically locked when two cars are brought together.
Another objectof this invention is the production of a simple and eflicient coupler which consists of a minimum number of parts and which may be manufactured at the minimum amount of expense.
With the above and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel coinbinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of two cars in a position to be locked together by means of the coupler. Fig. 2 is a central horizontal section through the coupler. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the coupler detached from the cars. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal section through the coupler taken on the line 44.-, of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 55, of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a section taken on the line 66, of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective of the auxiliary portion of the coupler. 8 is a detail perspective of one of the locking dogs for automatically holding the couplers in an assembled locked position.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that 1 designates the primary portion of the coupler and 2 the auxiliary portion of the coupler. The primary portion of the coupler is provided with a socket portion 3 in which is pivotally mounted the rear end of the locking bar 4-. The rear end of the locking bar i is held in engagement with the primary portion of the coupler by means of a pivot pin 5 as illustrated in Fig. 2. The primary portion 1 of the coupler is open upon the upper face thereof so as to allow the locking bar 4 of the primary portion to be swung to a vertical position when so de- Speciiication of Letters Patent.

sired so as to be held out of an operative position.
The locking bar of the coupler comprises a pair of forwardly extending arms 6 which arms are provided upon the outer side thereof with a longitudinally extending groove 7. A. coil saring 8 is placed within each of the grooves and has its rear end connected to the respective ends of the transversely extending pin 9 which pin is carried by the arms 6. Each of the 6 is provided with an aperture 10 in which is pivotally mounted a dog 11 for the purpose of automatically locking the bar t in engagement with the removable pin 12 carried by the auxiliary portion 2 of the coupler. Each of the dogs 11 is provided with a projecting end 18 which projecting end is adapted to engage the pin 12 and prevents the bar t from being withdrawn from the auxiliary portion 2 of the coupler without first removing the pin 12. The springs S engage the projecting knob 1a of the dogs 11 so as to normally hold the dogs 11 in a position at right angles to the arms 6. The arms 6 are provided with shoulder portions 15 which shoulder portions constitute abutments for limiting the forward swing of the dogs 11 and prevent the same from moving forwardly beyond the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. When, however, the locking bar 4 is forced into the auxiliary portion 2 of the coupler the dogs 11 may readily yield to pass by the pin 12, but after having passed by the pin 12 the springs 8 will force the dogs 11 to the position shown in dotted lines, and thereby prevent the locking bar at from being withdrawn from the auxiliary portion 2 without first removing the pin 12.
Within the socket portion 3 of the primary portion 1 of the coupler is placed a vertically extending coil spring 16 which coil spring is firmly secured to the upper face of the socket 3 by means of a staple or other suitable fastening means 17. This coil spring engages at its upper end the under face of the locking bar 4 so as to normally force the same to a vertical extended position so as to constitute a cushion for the locking bar and prevent the same from coming in contact with the forward end of the primary portion 1 of the coupler.
The auxiliary portion 2 of the coupler is provided with an open end 18 having its side portions beveled as indicated at 19 for the purpose of directing the parallel arms 6 of the locking bar 1 into the auxiliary portion 2 of the coupler. The forward ends of these arms 6 are also pointed as indicated at I the arms 6 in their correct position. The
locking pin 12 as above referred to passes through the plates 21 and constitutes means for holding the bar 41: in engagement with the auxiliary portion of the coupler after the bar has been forced into the auxiliary portion thereof.
It should be understood that the present device may be especially adapted for small cars employed for moving dirt and other similar substances, although of course the same is readily adapted for use upon larger cars and vehicles of any type.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very simple and efficient coupler has been produced which consists of a minimum number of parts possible for accomplishing the desired result, and it should be further understood that the coupler may be readily detached in case of injury, owing to he simplicity of construction and the simple manner in which the same may be disassembled.

A car coupling comprising a primary and auxiliary section, a locking member pivot ally mounted within said primary section and capable of having a vertical swinging movement whereby said locking member may be thrown out of engagement with foreign objects when it is not desired that said member be used, said primary section provided with a socket at one end, a coil spring carried within said socket and engaging the under face of said locking member for normally holding'the same in a yieldable horizontal position to facilitate the compression of said locking member downwardly while the. coupling is being coupled, a locking pin carried by said auxiliary member, and means carried, by, said locking member for engaging said locking pin and holding said primary and auxiliary sections together.
